A few TV on DVD recommendations during the strike (firefly mention)

Tuesday 29 January 2008, by Webmaster

I recently asked readers for their suggestions on what to watch on DVD during the ongoing writers strike. Thanks to the many readers who wrote in with fine suggestions. Here are just a few of them (and there are may more suggestions from me and from readers here):

Rob Torbert: “My wife and I recently enjoyed a couple of Bryan Fuller shows on DVD: ‘Dead Like Me’ and ‘Wonderfalls.’ I think that both are better than [Fuller’s new ABC series] ‘Pushing Daisies’ because they are less Tim Burton-esque and have strong, complex female leads.”

Shannon O’Boyle: “Tell folks to check out ‘Due South.’ Written by the now-famous Paul Haggis (‘Crash’) and acted very well by ‘Slings and Arrow’s’ handsome Paul Gross, it’s a pretty cool little show about a Canadian Mountie (a fish out of water) who tries to function in a big city (Chicago — although they didn’t film it here, which is a bummer). It’s really sort of a prototype for some of the quirkier shows we enjoy these days.”

Mel recommends the wonderful “Freaks and Geeks”: “The first (or one of the first) of producer Judd Apatow’s nostalgic and quirky takes on adolescence (he later produced ‘The 40-Year-Old Virgin,’ ‘Knocked Up’ and ‘Superbad’). Anyone who grew up in the early ’80s will think this show is hilarious (and painful!). Such a bummer it only lasted a season, but it’s a gem. It also launched the careers of many young actors/actresses you still see on shows and in movies today.”

Many readers chimed in on the Watcher Web site with a recommendation for the Joss Whedon sci-fi series “Firefly”:

Douglas: “I got it for Christmas — it’s the complete series (one short season) including unaired episodes, and it’s both interesting and humorous. I’m having a great time watching it. I don’t know how Nathan Fillion is faring [as a recurring character] on ‘Desperate Housewives,’ but in this show he is excellent.”

Agreed, Douglas. It took me a few episodes to get fully into “Firefly,” but once I did I was smitten. Whedon is masterful at creating a universe of characters and finding interesting ways for them to bounce off each other, and of course his peerless dialogue can be both painful and funny in the same sentence. On the surface, “Firefly” may have been about the travels of a ragtag group of spacefarers through a dangerous galaxy, but the most interesting part of “Firefly” was what happened between those sharp-tongued, complicated characters inside that beat-up little ship.

I’ll have more TV-on-DVD suggestions soon. Thanks again to all who contributed.
