Alyson Hannigan - "Date Movie" Unrated Edition DVD - Bostonherald.com Review

Dump “Date Movie” as soon as possible. Created by the writers of “Scary Movie,” this assault on chick flicks brags a lot but has no bite.

Affable Alyson Hannigan of “American Pie” gross-out fame plays every romantic heroine wrapped into one, Julia Jones. Overweight and unloved Julia toils away at her parents’ Greek restaurant in an ode to “My Big Fat Greek Wedding.”

There she meets impish British dork Grant (Adam Campbell), holding up the foppish Hugh Grant legacy. Their courtship spans spoofs of classics “When Harry Met Sally,” “My Best Friend’s Wedding,” “Bridget Jones’s Diary,” “Meet the Parents” and virtually any romantic flick made in the past five years.

The film is completely reliant on gross-out humor for laughs - a scene involving Jinxer the cat using the toilet comes to mind - and the “unrated” tidbits here are more like preschool pranks than risky business. Even more mournful are the extras. For true torture, watch the film with a laugh track, or watch the deleted scenes, which hardly differ from what is in the body of movie.

Comic Eddie Griffin offers relief as Julia’s hard-boiled father and Jennifer Coolidge (“Best in Show,” “Legally Blonde”) is dead-on in her impersonation of Barbra Streisand’s flower mama Roz Focker from “Meet the Fockers.”

This is not “Not Another Teen Movie,” which made similar spoofs work. Where “Date Movie” succeeds is in degrading women in nearly every scene. Whether it’s taking jabs at weight or sexuality, the film does this in poor taste.
