Alyson Hannigan - "Date Movie" on The Big Flicks of 2006

Sunday 1 January 2006, by Webmaster

Seen all the big movies of the holiday season already? ET has a sneak peek at the biggest movies of the new year to whet your appetite!

In ’Last Holiday,’ opening January 13, QUEEN LATIFAH plays Georgia Byrd, a meek, quiet sort of girl "who’s always doing everything for everyone else," says the actress/rapper. She finds out she has just a few weeks left to live, "and that’s where the story takes off; the transformation going from being this quiet person to doing all the things she’s ever wanted to do, and it’s quite an adventure." The movie also stars LL COOL J, GERARD DEPARDIEU and TIMOTHY HUTTON.

’Spider-Man’ star JAMES FRANCO and ’Flight of the Phoenix’ co-pilot TYRESE GIBSON go head-to-head in the military school drama ’Annapolis,’ opening January 27, also starring JORDANA BREWSTER and DONNIE WAHLBERG. In the movie, James plays a regular guy from a poor shipbuilding family who lands a spot as a "plebe" freshman at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD. "I would describe it as a mixture of ’An Officer and a Gentleman’ and ’Rocky,’" Wahlberg tells ET. "It’s really a coming-of-age story, though. It’s really about a young man who has a dream, and gets a shot at that dream, and didn’t really think about all that dream would really require."

Other big January movies include ’Glory Road,’ with JOSH LUCAS, JON VOIGHT and DEREK LUKE starring in the true story of a college basketball team with the first-ever starting line-up of African-American players that went on to win the 1966 NCAA title; KATE BECKINSALE returns to vamp it up opposite SCOTT SPEEDMAN once again in the bloodsuckers vs. werewolves tale ’Underworld: Evolution’; and MARTIN LAWRENCE is back in a "fat suit" for the crazy comedy ’Big Momma’s House 2.’

February 3 finds STEVE MARTIN starring in the long-awaited remake of ’The Pink Panther.’ In the updated version of the 1963 film, Martin re-interprets the role of the bumbling police detective Inspector Clouseau, made famous by PETER SELLERS, while KEVIN KLINE takes on the role of Chief Inspector Dreyfus and French favorite JEAN RENO is Clouseau’s new sidekick. BEYONCÉ fits right in with her role as Xania — an international pop star — who happens to become a murder suspect! "You don’t know if Xania has a crush on Clouseau or if she is using her sexuality as a weapon," the pop diva tells ET.

Also on Feb. 3, ’Match Point’ starlet SCARLETT JOHANSSON joins HELEN HUNT and TOM WILKINSON in the upper crust satire ’A Good Woman,’ based on the OSCAR WILDE play. On Feb. 10, MATTHEW McCONAUGHEY teams up with SARAH JESSICA PARKER in ’Failure to Launch’ as a man who still lives with his parents and falls in love with the woman of his dreams — until he suspects she’s been hired by his folks to get him out of the house. And those wacky guys behind the ’Scary Movie’ franchise are at it again, and this time they’ve aimed their rapier wit at the romance movie genre with ’Date Movie’ (Feb. 17). Starring former "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" star ALYSON HANNIGAN (yet another actor who dons a "fat suit" for the role), the film skewers such flicks as ’Wedding Crashers,’ ’Meet the Fockers,’ ’Napoleon Dynamite’ and ’Kill Bill.’

In the thriller ’Firewall’ (Feb. 10), HARRISON FORD stars as a bank security expert who must crack his own theft-proof computer system and steal $100 million in order to save his wife (VIRGINIA MADSEN) and daughter from a criminal mastermind, played by PAUL BETTANY. And another drama, ’Freedomland’ (Feb. 17), finds JULIANNE MOORE and SAMUEL L. JACKSON facing a racial controversy when Julianne’s child disappears and feared dead. March continues the action with ’V for Vendetta’ (March 17), in which ’Star Wars’ princess NATALIE PORTMAN is rescued from a life-and-death situation by a masked vigilante known only as "V," set against the futuristic landscape of totalitarian Britain. The same day, DENZEL WASHINGTON, CLIVE OWEN and JODIE FOSTER engage in a deadly game of cat and mouse during a volatile bank robbery in ’Inside Man.’

And finally, on the lighter side, LINDSAY LOHAN endures a freak switch when her perpetual good fortune swaps with a chronically unlucky man in ’Just My Luck’ (out in March), her first new movie since ’Herbie: Fully Loaded’; RAY ROMANO, JOHN LEGUIZAMO and DENIS LEARY once again voice their prehistoric animal roles for the long-awaited CGI sequel, ’Ice Age 2: The Meltdown’; and TIM ALLEN and ROBERT DOWNEY JR. transform into man’s best friend in the Disney update of ’The Shaggy Dog’ (March 10). In the movie, Tim plays a lawyer whose devotion to his career comes at the expense of his family. When he turns into man’s best friend, he discovers a new perspective on becoming a loyal and devoted family, er, man.
