The Doctor might have been all over the Universe, but does he know the way to Amarillo? That knowledge could help him beat his latest enemy, Peter Kay.

The northern comedian, who appeared in the video of Amarillo, is set to star in the upcoming series of Doctor Who, playing villain Victor Kennedy.

The 32-year-old bagged the role after writing a fan letter to the show’s writer Russell T Davies.

The new series of Doctor Who will be shown on BBC One in the spring.

Davies said Kay will be taking on a serious role.

"We are delighted to welcome Peter onboard the Tardis," he said.

"Casting of Peter came about after he wrote me the most brilliant letter to say how much he’d enjoyed series one of Doctor Who.

"From that point on we started talking about a guest appearance."

Other guest stars in the show include CBBC’s Andrew Hayden Smith and Buffy the Vampire Slayer star Anthony Head.
