Whedon’s Tales of the Vampires Resurrected with Fresh Blood 2/7/09

FEBRUARY 6, NEW YORK — In 2004, Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator Joss Whedon reunited with writers from his hit TV show and delivered a twelve-issue comic series telling the stories of different vampires throughout time — Tales of the Vampires. Now, nearly five years later, Whedon welcomes two of the brightest rising stars in the art world, Becky Cloonan (American Virgin) and Vasilis Lolos (Last Call), into the Buffyverse with a Tales of the Vampire one-shot.

Vampires and humans now play together as equals and as friends…well, with a little bit of bloodshed. This has left Slayers massively unpopular, but still they have to fight against the newly fashionable and favored forces of evil.

In a small town in Massachusetts, a young man named Jacob goes about his day as usual — wakes early, eats breakfast with his mom, and heads to school. He’s a hard worker and a reliable friend to Alexia, an athletic and headstrong young woman. But at night Jacob likes to cut loose at the local arcade, where he’s befriended a reckless gang of vampires who enjoy drinking his blood. Jacob craves the high and the easy escape from the monotony of his life that this “bloodletting” provides. Enter the mysterious and sultry May, who can help Jacob leave those high school days behind — that is, if Alexia doesn’t stop her first.

"I’m wicked thrilled to be working with Joss Whedon, and getting the chance to take a stab at Buffy’s universe,” explains Cloonan. “Having Vasilis Lolos, Fábio Moon, Gabriel Bá, and Jo Chen on board pretty much makes this like my comic book dream team."

"Buffy is a pop culture phenomenon. I am really excited to contribute a brick in this pyramid of awesomeness!" exclaims Lolos.

Cloonan and Lolos, who have most recently worked together on the much-talked-about Pixu series, are joined by their Brazilian friends and collaborators Gabriel Bá (The Umbrella Academy) and Fábio Moon (Sugarshock), who provide an alternate cover. Fans can also expect another stunning cover by regular Buffy cover artist Jo Chen.

Tales of the Vampires hits the racks on June 3, 2009.
