On a grittier note, BBC America’s psychologically intense Conviction (Mondays at 9 pm/ET) has the feel of a great Prime Suspect mystery infused with the darkly violent shocks of The Shield. “This one’s gonna be a black hole,” a veteran detective says of a new case involving the murder of a 12-year-old girl. Sure enough, this investigation shatters the lives of many of those involved, including brothers in the same precinct, and their sister, who is a lawyer representing the key suspect. With sophisticated editing that shifts time and perspective to keep the viewer as off-balance as these mightily flawed cops, Conviction is the latest gripping gem to emerge on a network that excels at this sort of thing (Wire in the Blood, for instance).
