Is Sony screwed ? (the grudge mention)

There’s a good, long piece in today’s LA Times by John Horn, about Sony’s recent struggles to produce hits. Aside from last spring’s Hitch, the studio hasn’t released a fat grosser since The Grudge, which came out around Halloween last year. So that’s one year, two hits, and countless "surprise" flops - from Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo to Oliver Twist, and from Stealth all the way back to Spanglish. Though some executives refuse to see the cloud for the silver lining (typical suit speak, courtesy of Amy Pascal: "I feel good about the future"), Horn manages to gossip pretty effectively about Sony’s troubled slate. The Jim Carrey/Tea Leoni remake of Fun With Dick and Jane has long been rumored to be a disaster, but I hadn’t heard that I Dream of Jeannie was in such trouble (although, is it any surprise?). Though Pascal eventually admits that over the past year, the "movies weren’t good enough, period", the other Sony suits maintain that Memoirs of a Geisha is totally going to save the day. But can it be good enough to erase the damage wrought by a full year’s worth of crap?
