James Marsters’ Manager Responds To Recent Rumors

Friday 10 September 2004, by Webmaster

Seem like there where a lot of issues about James attending the Superslayercon in Oakland. His manager now deals with them by posting a letter.

To all convention attendees -

I have received a lot of e-mails expressing many opinions about recent conventions that James has been a part of. I am going to address these once and only once to bring some clarity and truth to the table - please do not e-mail me to either apologize or debate, as neither is necessary. First, no one is ever forced to attend a convention - fans choose to attend all on their own. Hopefully, it should be a fun experience where you get to see friends and have a chance to meet the talent (although acknowledged often times too briefly). Second, there will always be people who choose to see the glass as half empty and are very negative. It is odd to me that these people continue to come to the conventions but seemingly have a miserable time and want everyone else to also- think about it. Third, rumors and supposed conversations are just that and unless you hear or see something with your own eyes and ears why believe it - especially when it is negative and hurtful.

SO - let’s touch on some of the nastier rumors:

1. James is very proud and excited about the event we are producing in London. It should prove to be a fun, accessible, and unique convention for the fans that will be joining us. He has never bad mouthed the event or suggested to anyone not to come and have a great time with everyone. Furthermore, there are no other “supposed” events for him in the UK at a later time.

2. Julie Caitlin Brown - James and I are still very much working with Julie and have always appreciated all of her support.

3. Future conventions - yes, there will be future conventions in the United States. Whether James and I produce them or whether James attends as a guest shouldn’t concern the fans. All that should concern the fans is whether or not they have a great time and are treated with respect. Perhaps if James and I do produce any future conventions then you the fans may be guaranteed to be treated with the utmost respect.

James has always enjoyed attending the conventions and showing his appreciation to the fans who have helped make his career so successful so far. He hopes to be able to continue to be available to attend future conventions; however, if the negativity out weighs the enjoyment then it may just make it impossible to continue. My suggestion would be to only worry about your individual experience and not to get caught up in the rumor mill. I say all of this with the utmost respect and appreciation for everything the fans have done and look forward to the next time we can all be together in the spirit of support and love.

Best,

Steve Himber (manager for James Marsters)

yo, i’m lost. what rumors? its obvious from just reading the transcripts of the comventions Q&A sessions (for us people who can’t afford to go) that he completely loves it. why do some people always have to see the worst in everything? how can they count themselves as fans? sad, sad, ungrateful traitors. :)

It really makes me sad to read something like this. I’ve never met James as I’ve never been to a convention but as far as I can tell he’s very devoted to his fans. I really hope he’s not too upset about some stupid people trying to spoil the fun for others.

Hmm. It seems this happens in every fandom to one or other of the actors. I haven’t seen the runours, thank goodness and I don’t want to see them either.

The actors who attend these cons don’t *have* to and AFAIK aren’t paid huge amounts of money to do so. When they do, it’s partly as a ’thank you’ for the support they’ve received from fans of a particular show, but let’s face it, the shows they’re a part of are *jobs* they’ve done. They probably loved doing that job, but it was a job all the same. We also have to remember that these guys are people just like us. They deserve courtesy and respect and appreciation that they sometimes have bad days.

There’s a tendency in fandom for people to expect too much from the actors. They’re expected to be ’on form’ for hours on end, to answer the same question as enthusiastically the 150th time they’ve answered it as they did the 1st time. It’s also popular for fans to assume that the actors ’owe’ them. Sure, the show wouldn’t have been as popular without the fans, so the show needs the fans, but without the performances of the actors, the shows wouldn’t be what they are, so the fans need the actors too. It’s a symbiotic relationship.

Give the lad a break eh? And don’t put other people off. Besides, cons are a place for meeting friends as well as seeing the actors. For me, seeing the guests is only a small part of it. Enjoy the cons for what they are and take responsibility for your own pleasure. I know it’s hard if you meet your idol and they turn out to be a prat, but remember they have the absolute right to be as big a prat as you.
