For anyone who missed the first series of this wham-bam sci-fi thriller, the opening minutes of tonight’s series-two kick-off are a handy brochure. In an ordinary street at night, an old woman is astonished to see a sports car driven by what looks like a big fish. In hot pursuit is the Torchwood team of ET-bashers in their black 4x4. And there you have it: bold-as-brass aliens in modern-day Britain. The episode title, Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang, is also a pert summary of the show, as newcomers will find out. So, our Cardiff-based critter catchers are back, but missing their leader, Captain Jack. Fortunately they - and we - don’t have to wait long for his return. And Buffy star James Marsters makes quite an entrance as fellow Time Agent Captain John, a total swine with a serious new romantic fixation. As with the first run, there’s a certain heartlessness that undermines the slick action and impressive visuals. But there are encouraging signs that the characters will be more likeable this time around.
