Jewel Staite - Blog Update - Blondes have more fun

Sunday 2 September 2007, by Webmaster

Yeah. It’s been a while. Remember when I said I was going to write again once I was sitting in my brand-new office in my brand-newly renovated apartment? Yeah. Took a little bit longer than originally anticipated. Mark my words: I will Never Ever embark on something as hellish and emotionally draining as gutting a place entirely and starting from scratch. And where I came up with the bright idea that it would be "fun" to do our own painting I will never know; it’s been two weeks now since we’ve finished and finally moved in, and I still have a stubborn streak of Benjamin Moore- Oxford White in my hair. And the fact that it’s flattering in a reeeeally bleached blonde type of way is beside the point.

(Speaking of, a lot of you out there are miffed about the blonde hair--- here’s a newsflash: I was born a blonde. I have no idea what my natural hair color is now, mind you, but I have always felt like a blonde at heart. In a good way. There is no white-out on my computer screen.)

Other musings: We’re only a few episodes away from finishing this season of Atlantis, and I’m a little sad about it; but directly afterwards it looks like I might be going to Panama to finish The Tribe (seriously. I realize I’ve said this before.) It’s also my husband’s birthday next week, so we’re planning a party to break in the new pad, complete with Cape Cod-in the city theme. For those of you looking to get him a gift, he’s already talking about buying and renovating a new place, so muzzles are most welcome. We also managed to skip off to Comic Con a few weeks ago—thanks to those faithful BCs out there who made me feel loved at my first-ever Stargate panel (love you guys, and I can see your Jayne hats from a mile away). Also, thanks to all who have purchased the special edition of Serenity that just came out in stores (you all did, didn’t you?) I wish I could have done the commentary but it was a complicated passport-renewal/not being able to get to LA in time type of thing. Did they talk shit about me?

Your questions:

1. Did I marry Sean Maher? Yet another one of those questions that doesn’t really warrant a response, but did you laugh as much as I did?

2. What are my remedies for nervousness? I don’t have many. I’m generally kind of a nervous person as it is; I drink too much caffeine and get a little jittery just by nature, so I can’t help you there. I think the only reason people get truly nervous is because they doubt themselves and their own abilities. So the short answer is, don’t do that. Or at least try not to. Or find a good way of masking your nervousness, like drinking shots of vodka.

3. Is my "weight gain/sudden weight loss" an issue? Sigh. Not for me, it’s not. I am who I am. I lose weight when I’m really busy, or stressed, and I gain weight when I’m relaxed and happy, or when I’m paid to like on Firefly. And I wasn’t aware that I had a "sudden weight loss" recently. I still have to lie down to do up certain pairs of jeans just like everyone else.

4. Now that the special edition of Serenity has been released, I’ve been asked a lot if I would ever consider doing more Firefly/Serenity. It’s not up for consideration or discussion; I’d do it in a heartbeat. Whether more is ever going to happen, though, is still heresay. Don’t believe everything you read on the internet.

5. Here’s one that is more comment than question, a well-wisher, really. "I hope you do as good as Carson". Thanks. For the hoping.

6. Who would play me in a movie? This is a difficult question for an actor to answer because we all pretty much want to play ourselves. I’m better at being asked who I would play in a movie of their lives. Someone iconic and a little screwed up. Natalie Wood? Princess Di? Britney Spears? They’re all so similar, it’s hard to decide.

7. If I were an animal, what would I be? Bambi. Or most likely a house cat. Although my Chinese horoscope says I’m year of the dog, and so maybe that’s what I would be: a golden retriever/springer spaniel/chihuaua cross. That’s one weird lookin’ dog.

8. Are my friends all actors? Ha. No. I do have actors in my close group of friends, but only because they don’t really talk about acting and despise, like me, those actor-types who never shut up about their current projects/auditions or "the craft" (barf) of acting. Who wants to talk about that when you do it for a living? Most of my friends have nothing to do with the business and couldn’t care less who I’m working with or what I’m working on. Sure, we watch what I do, once, just so they don’t stare blankly when someone asks about it if I happen to drag them to a convention (which I do often; they take turns on who comes with me). And it’s so refreshing. You can tell the people who want to be friends with you for the wrong reasons pretty much right away, and I’m very blessed to have a lovely group of very genuine, slightly self-centered, dramatic and hilarious people around me who I can trust completely. Not to be on time, though, and not to bring my clothes back when they borrow them, and definitely not to leave the bloody bottle of vodka behind when they leave, but they’re always there for me, even if I’m asking them to help me move for the umpteenth time or sit in an autograph room with me for five hours twiddling their thumbs. They’re the best. And if you’re reading this, turds, don’t let it swell your head.

That’s all for now.

And FYI: the questions most interesting and/or fun to answer will be. And no repeats!

Love J

Ps Brunettes are beautiful too, by the way. Us blondes are slightly jealous cuz you’re more exotic than we are.

PPS. Apologies to the werewolf community out there; you’re right, there are some good werewolf movies. Just not when the werewolf is a sexy one with boobs... see why I turn down certain projects??
