Joss Whedon - "The Avengers" Movie - Mtv.com Interview

Thursday 26 July 2012, by Webmaster

Because it is a comic book convention at its core, there are countless types of heroes at San Diego Comic-Con; costumed heroes based in fact, but mostly fiction; real-life heroes from the genre like comic book godfather Stan Lee, and celebrity heroes who have brought said fictional heroes to life via the big or small screen. If we had to anoint one MVP hero of 2012 however, that title would be awarded to writer/director Joss Whedon.

Not only has Whedon long been a fan favorite, beloved for creating TV cult hits "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "Angel" and "Firefly," — the latter of which celebrated its 10-year anniversary at Comic-Con with an emotional reunion panel, but also for the superheroic feat of directing the year’s #1 movie, "The Avengers."

Joss Whedon Downloads On ’Avengers,’ ’Firefly’

MTV News was lucky enough to catch up with Whedon at Entertainment Weekly’s annual Comic-Con bash on Saturday (July 14) to talk about his busy work schedule, the "Firefly" reunion and what other "Avengers"-related goods we can expect from him in the near future.

MTV News: Have you had any time to rest after the craziness of promoting "Cabin in the Woods" and "The Avengers"?

Joss Whedon: Yeah, no. The day before I came here we finished post production on "Much Ado About Nothing", and that night I went to have a meeting about "Dr. Horrible 2", so I don’t rest.

MTV: Well they say "no rest for the wicked."

Whedon: No. I’m wicked. I’m not only wicked, I’ll be appearing in the touring company for "Wicked" as Elphaba, so look for that.

MTV: There was some "Ant-Man" footage screened during the Marvel panel, are you sad that we won’t be seeing [Nathan] Fillion’s take on that character?

Whedon: You know, what Fillion did for me can’t be filmed, that’s all I’m saying.

MTV: There were a lot of announcements made during Marvel’s panel, will you be extended invites to visit the "Captain America: Winter Soldier" and "Thor 2" sets?

Whedon: I know how to sneak onto them. I’m a good [sneak] you know, I’ll stalk them.

MTV: There was a lot of Joss Whedon love on Twitter before Comic-Con this year, with fans saying you should run around Hall H for a victory lap of high-fives. Was there something extra special in the air for you this time around?

Whedon: Yeah there really was. [With the "Firefly" panel] I would describe it as 5,000 people all tearing up about the same thing at the same time. That’s a little weird. One has fantasies of success but that isn’t what it is, it’s so intimate, that’s a one-on-one, we had an entire hall full of people having a one-on-one experience, including us with each other. I looked over at Nathan and I didn’t know if I could look at Nathan because I was getting too emotional.

MTV: With all the love for the series out there and building, do you ever think about how you could give "Firefly" to the world in other capacities?

Whedon: I don’t know. I always keep the option open because I love those peeps so much, but if I spent all my time thinking about it I’d be bitter and strange. Bitter-er and stranger.

MTV: Has Marvel president Kevin Feige been leaving you messages, harassing you for more "Avengers?"

Whedon: You know what, we did one. It worked out OK and then I did "Much Ado."

MTV: What about the rumor that Marvel was going to release a director’s cut of "Avengers" in theaters?

Whedon: Not true.
