Joss Whedon, recently hired as writer/director of the upcoming "Wonder Woman" movie, told TV Guide Online that he is months away from selecting the actress to play the lead character, according to SciFi Wire.

"Everybody is in agreement that casting is not an issue right now," Whedon said. "It’s not a vehicle to be built around a particular star.

"We want to write the thing, find the right character and then figure out who should play her. There are various famous people whose names have come up because that always happens. However, we’re talking about Wonder Woman here. Those are tough booties to fill."

Whedon did reveal one characteristic he will be seeking in the lead actress when the time for casting arrives.

"I think we will go a little younger than the traditional idea of Wonder Woman," that is, someone in her 20s, he said.

As for hiring any actresses from Whedon’s previous series like "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "Angel" or "Firefly," Whedon simply responded that it is a "movie, not a party for my friends.

  • But yet, where would you be Mr. Whedon without your friends. Without the wonderful actors who portrayed your characters neither Buffy nor Angel would have done as well. Please Joss don’t start stabbing the people in the back that lead you to where you are.

  • i beg to differ, i think joss is right, i think he is just stating that he will cast the most competent actress who fits the role, not just someone who he knows and likes

  • Please Joss don’t start stabbing the people in the back that lead you to where you are.

Please understand, I’m not trying to attack you personally, and I apologize if it seems that way. There’s nothing wrong with what you wrote, although I would submit that it’s a two way street with the actors and the creative teams equally deserving the merit of the show(s) becoming successful.

It just seems that Joss Whedon gets vilified so often, and from what I can see, he is extremely loyal to and supportive of his actors.

Just do a little checking through the lists of actors used by Joss Whedon on all of his projects and you will find out how fiercely loyal he is to them ! Many of his starring actors (including Sarah Michelle Gellar, Charisma Carpenter, Julie Benz, Bianca Lawson (the girl who played Kendra the Vampire Slayer), Danny Strong, Elizabeth Anne Allen, Nathan Fillion, and James Marsters) had all initially tried out to play parts other than the ones they later played. (Source IMDB.com) Furthermore, he has repeatedly resurrected actors (either as their original characters or new ones) to play either on the same series or on other series’ of his. If you want examples, and there are plenty, I will happily provide them. Incredibly, the character death for which he has received the most criticism, Tara’s sad demise in Seeing Red, was planned to be reversed in season 7. Not by having her come back as the First (although that was also considered). There was a plan to have an episode dedicated to having her brought back to life. It fell through when Amber Benson was unable to appear due to scheduling conflicts. See IMDB.com trivia for details.

  • I am sure you get hundreds of names tossed at you every day for Wonder Woman. You are right.. those are some big shoes to fill. I hope I get the opportunity to do so. Hi. My name is Kelly. I heard you are looking for a Wonder Woman in her 20.. unfortunatley I am in my early 30’s. However, I don’t look it. I don’t drink, I don’t smoke, I don’t use drugs. (Thus, I look younger) Wonder Woman has been my heroine since I was a little girl. I had Wonder Woman Underoos, doll, costumes... I was the Amazon Queen last year for Halloween.. being a Amazon myself (6’1"). Since the talk of the movie has circulated... I have received lots of comments that I need to be Woman. I took it as a complement... but today when I went to buy the first new relase of Wonder Woman comic, the store owner put Joss Weason on a peice of paper. He said that I need to find him, and send him a picture. So.. if you are the Joss Weason (Whedon) are you interested ? May I send you a picture. I told my self I have to try. The worst thing that can happen is you say no.. but I don’t want this opportunity to pass me by...

    Hope to hear from you.

Thank you for your time.. Kelly Wonderwoman@french.toast.net
