Joss Whedon and J.J. Abrams Temp at The Office

Monday 29 January 2007, by Webmaster

Not too long ago, we reported that "Lost" and "Alias" creator/director J.J. Abrams was set to direct an episode of NBC’s successful sitcom, "The Office." Abrams will seemingly be taking a time-out from the ongoing development of "Star Trek XI" to get behind the camera for the small screen production that’s hit pretty big, starring "The Daily Show" alum Steve Carell. The series is catching the eye of a lot of visionary director’s apparently. Currently in its third season, "Office" temps seem to be parading through like a Who’s Who of Directors. Harold Ramis ("Groundhog Day" and "Analyze This") directed the episode "A Benihana Christmas" this fall. While Ramis’ work shows he was a good fit with the show’s dry and satirical humor, Abrams seems like more of a mismatch.

However, the latest word from IGN qualifies for a far more interesting and appropriately quirky pairing; that of "The Office" and director/writer Joss Whedon. Whedon is probably best known for his sci-fi, his witty camp, and for being a new George Lucas minus the lackluster prequel and digital fireworks complex. His first shows, "Buffy" and its spin-off "Angel" were valiant efforts with many shining moments and colorful characters, but nothing could prepare sci-fi fans for the underprivileged and underappreciated genius that was his wonderfully fresh and intriguing space western "Firefly." Now, in the early production stages of his own next big project like Abrams, Whedon is developing "Wonder Woman," preparing to bring the Amazon Princess superheroine to the big screen. And, this rumor has been confirmed by EW.com, so Whedon will be stopping by "The Office" to direct for a television series once again.

The episodes Abrams and Whedon are respectively attached to are reportedly scheduled to air in late February, just in time for winter sweeps.
