’O.C.’ Girls Kiss (buffy mentions)

SPOILERS FOR THE O.C.

December 7, 2004 — MISCHA Barton’s love lorn character on "The O.C.," Marissa Cooper, is slated for a lesbian love scene later this season, according to reports.

The girl-girl love scene is usually a guaranteed ratings getter - a lesbian kiss pumped up the ratings for "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" a few years ago - so "The O.C." is going to try it too, says a report on the web site TVgasm.com.

A Fox spokesman for "The O.C." declined to comment on the report yesterday.

The ratings for "The O.C." this season - while solid - haven’t exactly been through the roof and a lesbian storyline - or at least a main character experimenting sexually with someone of the same sex - could help matters.

Howard Stern had it right a few years ago when he said that "lesbians equal ratings" - the audience for "Buffy" shot when Alyson Hannigan’s character Willow began a relationship with Tara, another witch (played by Amber Benson).

Since then, girl-girl love scenes have become more common on TV, so it was probably just a matter of time before "The O.C." dipped into the well.

Gay and bi-sexual characters have been scattered throughout primetime for years on shows like "Will & Grace" and others.

It is believed that Barton’s character will just be experimenting with the fairer sex and not committing to a full-on romantic, sapphic relationship.

i think o.c sucks. they copy a lot of things-i stopped watching it bc they were getting lamer each ep. will and grace, buffy and D.C. now-those shows proved gays, bisexuals, lesbains equal ratings.

maybe it’s just me, but i hate how this article makes it sound as if buffy only included a lesbian storyline for ratings. wasn’t it reported that joss whedon walked out on a meeting because the network was against the idea?

*gasp* there’s going to be a lesbian scene on tv! I’m awash in a sea of confusion! *note the sarcasm* I would be more interested if it were shineing a new light on a gay relationship. I can flip on any channel and see two women making out, it’s so common now I’m surprised anyone cares. I loved the relationship with Willow and Tara because it was a RELATIONSHIP not just two hot women making out.

i love the OC. but this just sounds dumb. There were two girls kissing this week, just to show seth that it’s not a big deal. they didn’t have to show two girls kissing.

Buffy wasn’t about ratings as much as Once and Again wasn’t.

Stupid article! First of all, Buffy never needed something polemic to raise ratings.. the series wasn´t the most watched but it had a solid fan base. Second, the lesbian kiss with Willow and Tara happened much after they started their relanshionship so they did it to make it more real.. just that!!! And third, The O.C. sucks, really.. watch rich people complaining about their "hard" lives pisses me off!
