Police Academy shuts down (joss whedon mention)

Leslie Easterbrook, best known as that take-charge woman Debbie Callahan in the “Police Academy” flicks, tells UGO.com that the oft-rumoured “Police Academy 8” - as we know it - has been smeared across the intersection of Olive and Pass. Yep, Warner Bros have instead decided to spend the money on a tab at the in-studio Starbucks.

Easterbrook - better known these days as ‘Mother Firefly’ (isn’t that Joss Whedon’s name?) in “The Devils Rejects” - said that the planned reunion movie - all the original cast, including Steve Guttenberg, were supposed to be getting back together for it - has collapsed.

“In the last couple of years there have been rumors about doing a number eight, so Jerry Weintraub’s company and Village Roadshow came together and decided to produce the movie and they hired a writer who wrote two drafts and nobody was happy with them. It kind of died at that point. I think Warner Home Video wanted to do one straight to video and that seemed like a good idea. The last I heard, Warner wants to do it, but they want a producer to get independent financing”, says Easterbrook.

Having said that, I think you can pretty much guarantee that any future “Police Academy” movie will be featuring the original cast - independent financing would probably pay for G.W Bailey and that’s about it - or any half-decent comics in it. Hmm. Makes me wonder whether they’ve considered the “Mahoney” spin-off they’ve been toying with for the last couple of decades? Surely, Steve Guttenberg would work for a couple of PB & J sandwiches. I might actually rent that... or, ask someone to send me a screener. Same deal.

Meantime, Easterbrook said she’s got a couple of films in the works - but one of them isn’t the horror film “Job”. Though she’s listed as being in the film, the actress said she’s not actually in that one. “I’m actually not associated with Job. I didn’t realize when I was on IMDB the other day that it was on my credits. It’s an interesting new project that I read [but] the character just wasn’t right for me”.

Someone really needs to offer this woman with a role as a ballsy bra-less police lieutenant with a penchant for cocky coppers, like this...
