Angel & Faith

Rebekah Isaacs - "Angel & Faith" Comic Book - Issue 9 - Slayalive.com Q&A

Monday 7 May 2012, by Webmaster

1. Bamph: I asked this of Georges in the last Q/A with him for Buffy #7 and wanted your take on this too. Do you go over the scripts for the issues you don’t draw and are done by a guest artist like Angel & Faith #5 and #10 in order to see how they will impact the next issues you do work on and do you talk with the guest artist about their issues?

Rebekah: I always ask to see the issues I don’t draw even if they don’t directly affect mine (like #5 or #15) because I can’t get enough of Christos’s scripts but don’t get involved in the art direction unless my previous issue affects it or my next issue is affected by it. But in #10 the action links directly into #11, so Chris Samnee and I conferred a lot over how to match things up. I relayed the necessary info about the interior of Giles/Faith’s flat and he did these gorgeous character/costume designs that helped us stay consistent on clothing between issues. Phil and I emailed a bit about the interior of the flat but it wasn’t a central aspect of the story in #5, as you’ll see it definitely is in #10.

2. Morphia: Great work, as always. I love the way you draw Drusilla. In the show, we’ve seen Dru in modern clothes as well as the more antique style she favours here. Were her fashion choices left up to you, or did was this something you discussed with the writer?

Rebekah: The script specified to put her in Victorian clothing. I think it helps bolster her image as a symbol, almost a religious icon or goddess, to her followers. I wanted to give her more grown-up, elegant clothing from the period, though, to go along with her new-found sanity. The dress she wears in her childhood home owes credit to Steve, though, I loved it on his cover so much I just had to use it in the interior scene.

3. spuffyspangellover: Your work is always fantastic but issue #9 really showcased some of your best work so far in this series. Do you have a personal favorite panel that you’ve drawn from the Daddy Issues arc?

Rebekah: It’s nearly impossible for me to choose a specific panel, but I’m really proud of the sequence of panels in which Faith finally snaps at Pat and nearly strangles him. I love drawing really intense emotion, it’s a favorite challenge of mine and hopefully I pulled it off!

4. jellymoff: You have quickly taken a shine to drawing these characters very well. Has there been anyone that you had difficulty getting right?

Rebekah: Drusilla gave me an unbelievable amount of grief for some reason. I think it’s because Juliet has such incredibly defined features that if they’re even a little off she’s totally unrecognizable. I worked on the likeness a ton in my sketchbook before starting #6, and I think it helped and I was able to get a decent grasp of her by the time I actually drew her in the series. And I have to admit I’m still discovering tiny nuances to Angel’s likeness nearly every issue!

5. Bamph: This issue had a little flashback to the Angel episode, "Five By Five." There’s been a few so far in the series. Has it been challenging recreating these famous moments from past episodes in Angel & Faith?

Rebekah: Not really, luckily! They’re really fun to do because I know the reader already knows the story of that scene, so I just can focus on creating a nicely composed illustration. I really liked that particular flashback because the light coming through the window into the alleyway is such a strong and beautiful design element.

6. Bamph: How has it been going drawing Connor and Willow in the next arc?

Rebekah: Loving ’em!! As a former high school geek, I’ve always loved Willow to bits. She was one of the original likenesses I tested for so I felt pretty confident with her. I was a little nervous about Connor but so far it’s been good. I love his relationship with Angel in the last part of the show when they finally came to an understanding. It’s fun to be involved with a continuation of that story.

7. AndrewCrossett: Is the Lorophage demon dead? I wasn’t sure if he was supposed to be dead or just unconscious and drained of all his stolen trauma.

Rebekah: As far as I know he’s dead. He was written as dying in the script, but then anything is possible in this universe, I guess!

8. AndrewCrossett: Are you privy to the whole Angel & Faith story right through to the end, or just as far as the latest script you’ve been given?

Rebekah: I know the bare bones now, but there will surely be smaller plot arcs that will surprise even me. But what I do know is nuckin’ futs (in a good way)!

9. Morphia: Given that we now know that Connor appears in the next arc, any chance of more flashbacks with Darla? I’d love to see you draw more of her.

Rebekah: None that I know of, but I hope so too!

10. jellymoff: With Angel and Faith keeping you busy, do you have time to work on any other projects? If so, what’s the next think we will see from you outside the Buffyverse?

Rebekah: A&F keeps me very, gratefully busy. I haven’t had time to work on anything but my own personal and eternally hidden-from-public-view Labyrinth fanart.
