Whether it’s real or fake, what is the deal with the nudity stigma? People put way too much emphasis on it, whether they’ll do it or not.
Personally, I’ve always thought that when actors say "I love the script, and I will do anything to do the movie...except nudity," it’s just ridiculous. Sure, frivolous nudity can be trimmed out. But nudity that’s essential for the role (as in a porn star in this case or a stripper in the case of Natalie Portman or Jessica Alba), is just another part of the role. And if they come out against it right off the bat, they’re doing a disservice to the character. Essentially, altering the vision that the writer and director had for the character.
Nudity doesn’t have to be raunchy or overly sexual. Look at Thora Birch and Mena Suvari in American Beauty. Those are two young girls who had never done nudity (nor done it since), and they both chose to make that sacrifice because they felt their characters were worth it. The nudity in that film was used as art, to literally be scenes where both girls allow themselves to be seen, completely, by someone else. It’s a physical metaphor for being emotionally naked, and both scenes were done well and were beautiful, not at all raunchy.
To say she’d never be topless in a crappy raunch-fest teen movie is understandable, but to either not do a role, or alter it, just because you’re nervous about it...it just lowers the respect level. Look at how many actors and actresses won Academy Awards for movies they’ve appeared naked in, and imagine how their careers would be going had they turned those roles down because of the nudity?
Also, to refuse to do sex scenes in any form (even in artistic form), but then having multiple raunchy extended sex scenes in a crappy movie (Harvard Man) is just nonsensicle.
Anyway, this isn’t a big deal either way. But, God, the superficiality of some people’s opinions are just, on occasion, mind boggling.
