Thesps take breath of indie ’Air’

Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ken Watanabe and Diego Luna are negotiating to star in "The Air I Breathe," to be directed by Jieho Lee for Emilio Diez Barroso’s Nala Films and Paul SchiffPaul Schiff Prods.

Pic will begin shooting in Mexico City in January.

Crime drama penned by Jieho and Bob DeRosa is based on an ancient Chinese proverb that breaks life down into four emotional cornerstones — happiness, pleasure, sorrow and love.

Producers are Diez Barroso, Nala’s Darlene Caamano and Schiff. Tai Duncan of Paul Schiff Prods. and Christopher Pratt are exec producing.

Nala Films, recently founded by Diez Barroso — the great-grandson of late Televisa founder Emilio "el Tigre" Azcarraga — is financing the film with a budget under $10 million. Nala has raised significant coin from private investors in Mexico and tapped into film subsidy programs there.

Schiff, who is producing outside his deal with Sony Pictures, brought the project to Nala, which aims to finance three to four English-language pics per year in the $6 million to $12 million range.

Gellar stars in the upcoming "Southland Tales," while Watanabe next appears in "Memoirs of a Geisha." Luna stars in the upcoming "Solo dios sabe."

  • Another Role Already?

    21 October 2005 19:55, by evil_silence
Wow! SMG is becoming a very popular actress now! That’s like 6 new roles she’s got for herself! Hum, what’s funny is that she said leaving Buffy was not for pursuing a movie career, kind of makes you wonder... Oh well, looks like we’ll be getting a great bunch of SMG here soon!

  • It was very clear that she wanted to do movies. She left Buffy for personal and professional reasons.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEEKLY: Why now? Why is this the right time? [to leave Buffy] SARAH MICHELLE GELLAR: I hope it is the right time. This is so weird. I was 18 when I started the show; I’m 26. I’m married. I never see my husband. This has been the longest span of my life in one place. There’ve been times where that’s been difficult — you want to pick up and go, try other things, live in different places. It feels right, and you have to listen to that. ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Do you have a clear post-Buffy plan for making it in the movies? SARAH MICHELLE GELLAR: If I did, I’d write a book, cash in, and retire. My movie experience has shown me you can’t plan. ACCES HOLLYWOOD: Why are you leaving? SARAH MICHELLE GELLAR: For lots of reasons. I’m leaving for personal reasons and leaving for professional reasons. I’m a little exhausted. I was a 18 old kid when i started and I’m 26 married woman. There are other things in my life that needs a little time. ACCES HOLLWOOD: Starting a family? SARAH MICHELLE GELLAR: Eventualy. It’s not something I’m willing to do tommorrow. I’ve learned not to say something specific. MOVIELINE: Do you have a post-"Buffy" plan? SARAH MICHELLE GELLAR:I need a break from television more personally than professionally. The grind of it. I need to travel, to decompress. You worry if you’ve done yourself a disservice. Is the work challenging enough? Are you getting lazy? That’s my biggest fear. But I’d love to do a sitcom one day. I’d also love to do big feature films. I want to do period pieces, comedy, action, drama. I want to do it all. And I want to do it tomorrow!

  • And the reason we have all the above quotes is because???? Im HAPPY for her and any BTVS alums that manage to have a career away from BTVS. I think all of the actors never got the respect they deserved. I cant think of many * if any* shows that demand their regular cast be funny * and make us laugh*, dramatic * make us cry*, kick-ass and SELL all of those qualities sometimes in 1 episode.

  • I believe that the above quotes were in reply to the first comment, about how she didn’t say she was going to do movies. I would love to see her in a crime drama, or any drama for that matter - I think she’s an incredible dramatic actress. I’m basing this on Buffy, of course, not "Harvard Man"..."Cruel Intentions" was too campy to be discussed as a dramatic role, though that scene in the end where she faces everybody and cries...man, she can say so much without even speaking!

Who’s Ken Watanabe? What was he in before?
