Sarah Michelle Gellar - ’The Grudge’ takes a bite out of the UK box office

Following its success in the US, The Grudge bounded straight to the top of the UK box office, earning £2.26m in its opening weekend. Its victory terminates the three-week reign of the animated Shark Tale, which slips to number two.

A remake of a hit Japanese horror film, The Grudge stars Sarah Michelle Gellar of Buffy the Vampire Slayer fame as a pensive American student who finds herself menaced by evil spirits in a Toko house. The movie is directed by Takashi Shimizu, who directed the original Ju-On: The Grudge in 2003.

The box office top three is rounded off by Finding Neverland, which climbs one place in its third week of release. The misanthropic Christmas comedy Bad Santa is a new entry at four, while Birth, starring Nicole Kidman, enters the chart at number five.
