Thejakartapost.com Sarah Michelle GellarSarah Michelle Gellar - "The Grudge 2" Movie - Thejakartapost.com ReviewRizal Iwan Sunday 3 December 2006, by Webmaster The Grudge 2 (Horror, 95 minutes) Starring Amber Tamblyn, Arielle Kebel, Jennifer Beals, Edison Chen, Sarah Michelle Gellar. Directed by Takashi Shimizu. American-born Japanese horror films prove to have quite some legs. This sequel to the 2004 hit intertwines three parallel storylines still dealing, of course, with the wrath of Kayako and Toshio, the vengeful spirits from the fist film. The first finds Aubrey (the sister of Gellar’s character in the first installment, played by Tamblyn) going to Japan to fetch her sister (Gellar, in a 3-minute I’m-here-to-get-killed turn reminiscent of her cameo in Scream 2), who is now hospitalized for trauma. The second involves three schoolgirls stupid enough to enter Kayako’s cursed house. And the third, the most appealing of the three, deals with an American family who is somehow afflicted with Kayako’s curse, all the way in Chicago. Despite some jumpy moments, the still scary presence of the phantom mother and child and the still effective-as-ever rattling sounds, it feels that there’s nothing going on that we haven’t seen in the first installment. Although the American family storyline shows an attempt to make the horror larger than before (and sometimes it works), people will be likely to walk out of the theater thinking, do we really need this sequel? **1/2 Keywords |
