Unfortunately, it appears as if Sarah Michelle Gellar has become the go-to girl for crummy PG-13 horror films. It’s bad enough she was in both lame “Grudge” films; but now, with “The Return,” she has cemented herself as the star of nonscary horror films released onto DVD as unrated editions. She plays Joanna, a traveling sales rep who returns to the small town in Texas where she grew up. She begins having flashbacks to her troubled childhood and is haunted by images of self-mutilation and nasty spirits.

Even with the scariest scenes added back into the film for this unrated edition, the movie isn’t all that frightening. The DVD includes an alternate ending, one making-of featurette and some deleted scenes. Price: $29.98. Rent or buy: Rent.
