Sarah Michelle Gellar orders Prinze Jr to reduce show length

Sunday 23 October 2005, by Webmaster

SARAH MICHELLE GELLAR was so infuriated when she learned her husband FREDDIE PRINZE JR planned to make an hour-long sitcom, she ordered him to slice the episodes in half.

While the former BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER star was happy for her husband of three years to be starring in semi-autobiographical show FREDDIE, she was far from thrilled when she realised how intense his filming schedule would be.

Prinze says, "The original idea for the new show, Freddie, was for an hour-long show, and then Sarah said, ’Are you crazy? You know what kind of hours I worked? You better rework it into a half-hour!’

"So I did! I always listen to my wife. That’s why I still have one!"

  • I don’t get it. It’s okay for her to go out and make movie after movie, but he can’t do an hour sitcom?

    Hmmmmmmmmmmm

  • Haha. Freddie is a lil’ bitch. SMG could kick his ass any day of the week.

  • Couple things here... BTVS involved - necessarily - lots of nightime/early morning shoots for the frequent nighttime scenes (Vampires and other forces of darkness prefer the cover of night, whereas a comedy - even an hour long one - would most likely be studio-based (if it was going to be anything like the current show is) and thus the hours - though they may be a lot of them, would hardly be as long and intense as a genre show like Buffy and have pretty much zero on location shots. A simple comedy doesn’t require the lengthy lighting, monster makeup, wounded human makeup, training for fight scenes, lengthy use of stunt doubles, filming the double and the actor over and over, the setup, staging, etc. A comedy that has no supernatural pr fantasy elements, no kick boxing super heroes, and is set in boring, every day life will never require the time, staging, and odd hours that a genre show like Buffy requires (required, sniff sniff - I still miss it!).

Also, could Sarah really have that much power over FPJr’s projects and would He in turn even have that kind of power (even for his own show - isn’t usually the network that makes the rules of the series (except for syndicated series where it’s made first THEN stations decide if they want to carry it or not). Anyway, not that I doubt SMG gave advice to him, but just wondering if it really is as attributable to her as he says. Plus it makes her sound kind of bossy and demanding (whereas I think it was probably meant to be a sweet sort of warning about what he was potentially getting himself into and she is probably feeling like she wants to spend as much time together as possible while they are young, in love so they can enjoy every minute possible). I personally think SMG is probably a really nice - albeit professional and a "take no BS off people" - young woman in real life, tho some articles and comments hint around that she is more of a nasty beeatch. Of course, people always get slammed who are popular, beautiful, and seem to have a life that most of us can only dream of, and this is the sort of article that could easily be misinterpereted and twisted around to fit those "primadonna" rumors. Anyway, not even sure why I found it necessary to comment on this, I’m probablky doing the very thing tht so often turns me off or irritates me about others sometimes - commenting on something they have no idea about. So anyway, sorry for doing that, but if anything, I wish FP and SMG every happiness and that they do get to spend time together as well as getting to maintain successful careers, etc.

  • Thats right, He better listen! Sarah gave up on BUFFY so she could spend more time at home with him, then he has the nerve to go back to work and work the same hours she did? Whats the point! I totally agree with Sarah, he needs to cut his hours. Or else she could have just kept filming Buffy anyways! Ugh!

Take a jokey comment and carefully word a piece of celebrity gossip around it to put a spin on what was said in order to make it sound like something else. It’s as simple as that. It’s nasty, pernicious so-called journalism by people who know exactly what they are doing, designed to perpetuate the status quo. Sexism is a blight on this world and is getting worse all the time.

  • Considering how rare 60 minute comedy series are (Ally McBeal is the only one I can think of in recent tv history) I suspect that there might well have been a fair amount of other input that Sarah’s comment in the decision to go for 30 minutes...
