Dushku gains new love-interest on reworked show, now called TRU

Eliza Dushku’s new Fox drama Tru Calling is undergoing alterations, with another title change and reshoots after the departure of key co-stars. Tru is the new title of the supernatural series, developed as Heroine before adopting the name Tru Calling. Fox has placed an initial order for 13 episodes of Tru, but seemingly called for the removal of a supporting character.

Nancy Drew actor Heath Freeman was cast in the pilot as Cameron, best friend and love-interest of Dushku’s heroine Tru Davies who as a morgue worker communicates with the recently deceased before reliving the day to set things right.

"I saw the full cut two days ago and it rocks," reported Freeman, ahead of his departure. "It’s like a cross between Run Lola Run and The Sixth Sense. Everyone in the cast did an amazing job, and Philip Noyce’s directing is furious and superb. I think everyone will love it."

NEW DIRECTION

Fox is instead expected to edit Freeman from the pilot and possibly reshoot his scenes with Dushku. Sources also report a fresh casting call for the part of Dr. Mark Evans, Tru’s boyfriend and college professor, while rumours suggest the role of morgue attendant Gardez is also being recast.

A new, likely recurring love-interest will be introduced in the second episode when Tru meets Luc, a hansome crime scene photographer with a haunted past. The episode sees a teen boy and girl hanging from a bridge, having seemingly agreed a suicide love pact.

Assessing the show’s prospects Dushku says, "What if you could go back 24 hours and change fate, change destiny, change someone’s life? Sometimes she won’t be able to save people. And if she does save someone, then how does that affect other people? It’s an interesting idea to play around with."

Tru unites Dushku with Buffy scribe Doug Petrie, who is confirmed to have joined the writing staff of the show.

Tru is scheduled to premiere on Fox in September.
