Actually The WB did require that Joss have Buffy killed off at the end of the run on their network. They did foot the bill if you recall. They didn’t want to pay the production cost, there was to be no fight for the show, they were the one calling the shots. Joss had no choice to come up with the idea of her resurection as a result of where the show was left off on the original network. Improvisation!
