Years before Darren Star became a household name with Sex and the City, he kickstarted the pretty-people-with-problems sub-sub-genre by creating Beverly Hills 90210. The behind-the-scenes drama of these young actors, most of whom were still fresh out of high school, being gobsmacked by stardom and inflated egos struck Star as seeming like a show itself.
