Adam Baldwin - "Chuck" Tv Series comes back on January 10, 2009

It's like TV-geek heaven today : Hours after the return date for "Lost" was announced, NBC has set a debut for the third season of "Chuck."

The show will kick off its third season on Sunday, Jan. 10 with back-to-back episodes before moving to its regular home at 8 p.m. ET Monday, Jan. 11.

NBC also says that "Heroes" will air a two-hour episode on Jan. 4, then slide back to 9 p.m. Mondays the following week. The moves boot "Trauma" off of Monday nights, and although there were reports Wednesday that the network was reconsidering its decision not to pick up the show, there's not much room on the schedule for it to go. The cutback of "Day One's" order will open up some space in the spring, but that's about it.

As for "Chuck," NBC is hoping the Sunday launch — a day after NBC airs an NFL playoff doubleheader during which it will no doubt be massively promoted — will expand the show's audience beyond the devoted cult it has now (the series averaged 7.36 million viewers last season). The Jan. 10-11 premiere will also give it a week on the air before "24" begins its new season on FOX.

In addition the already impressive array of guest stars lined up for this season — Brandon Routh, Angie Harmon, Robert Patrick, Armand Assante, Angie Harmon, Kristin Kreuk, Vinnie Jones and Robert Patrick — NBC also says former WWE champion "Stone Cold" Steve Austin will guest-star as a character named Hugo Panzer, who gets caught up in Chuck's (Zachary Levi) first solo mission.

NBC has ordered 19 episodes of "Chuck" this season. The Jan. 10 premiere date will give the show seven episodes (the premiere counts as two) on the air before the network's Winter Olympics coverage bumps it for two weeks in February. Assuming everything goes as planned, it would return on March 1 and run through mid-May.

#2 — Dollhouse

Joss Whedon's Dollhouse was only cancelled recently, but it already deserves a remake. It wasn't a bad piece of television by any stretch of the imagination — it was just…slow.

It started off as an interesting enough concept, but the ratings began to flounder when it didn't develop much. Sure, Echo was getting back her memories, but what did it matter ? It took a few episodes for the series to even get heated up, and once it did, it still didn't go anywhere. There was no real overarching plot (well, there was in the unaired episode "Epitaph One," but it went, well, unaired).

I like Joss Whedon, but the series could have used a little help. Maybe a remake from a fresh perspective would give Dollhouse a better light.

Nathan Fillion Wants To Be The Greatest American Hero

The Greatest American HeroAfter graciously losing the role of Green Lantern to Ryan Reynolds, Nathan Fillion has been openly campaigning to play another superhero, The Greatest American Hero.

In this 1980's TV show that premiered with a two-hour movie pilot, a school teacher finds a suit that grants him superhuman powers. Fillion told MTV that he feels Greatest American Hero, believe it or not (yeah, we did just write that), is "ripe for a comeback." Fillion added, "I know I'm Canadian, but I think I could put my hat in for that one."

This is not the first time Fillion has mentioned the role. He told IFC earlier this month that Greatest American Hero was his dream project, He even had some ideas about how technological advances could enhance a newer version.

With the technology we have available today for effects, I'd say it's largely the same idea, the same story, but the suit would be able to change and morph into whatever it is you needed him to do. So it could become armor, a scuba suit — you could do that stuff.

The stars of The Greatest American Hero have even visited the set of Castle, Fillion's TV show.

I actually met both William Katt and Robert Culp on the set of Castle. They're friends of one of our executive producers' fathers. We have the same stunt coordinator from The Greatest American Hero, so every time you saw William Katt take the fall from his flying stuff, it was our good guy Dennis [Madalone]. So I've got my all my fingers in the right pots.

Should the role ever come together, we don't doubt that Fillion will be "walking on air." (Yeah, we know, "groan.")

'Spider-Man 4' Black Cat Casting : What About Eliza Dushku ?

Sure, Anne Hathaway is the latest in a long line of rumored contenders for the role of Black Cat in "Spider-Man 4" (even though there's no confirmation the character is even in the film), but does anyone remember another rumor from a few years back that cast an entirely different actress in the role ?

Well, even if you didn't remember the pre-"Spider-Man 3" rumor that had "Dollhouse" actress Eliza Dushku playing cat burglar Felicia Hardy, we did — and we asked her about it when she dropped by Splash Page HQ a while back.

"Don't you love the Internet and the fans out there ?" Dushku laughed when MTV Movies Editor Josh Horowitz asked if she'd seen the fan-made "Spider-Man 4" posters with her as Black Cat. "They do it up !"

While Dushku didn't seem to have heard from anyone in the "Spider-Man 4" camp at that point (the interview was conducted last month), she seemed more than willing to suit up in the character's skin-tight costume, given the chance.

"Would you like to see me not just superimposed, but as Black Cat ?" asked Dushku.

Well, when Eliza Dushku asks you a question like that, the answer is obvious : an emphatic "Yes."

"Okay, well, tell your friends - write a letter," she laughed.

So, there you go, folks. Do we have another name to add to the list of Black Cat hopefuls ? Heck, there's at least as much support for this rumor as there is for the rest of the "Spider-Man 4" rumors, so...

Fox cancels Firefly way too soon : Unlike NBC, which for all its weaknesses will usually give a quality quirky show a decent chance to find its audience, Fox has the reputation of quickly abandoning anything that is not an instant hit. The primary example in recent years was Firefly, the Joss Whedon space opera that might have become a Battlestar Galactica had Fox shown any patience at all. But the program was mishandled by the network in any number of ways and was abandoned halfway through the 2002-03 season. The upshot is that now, even when Fox does give a show a fair shot (such as Whedon's most recent series, the just canceled Dollhouse), the Firefly example still gets cited as evidence of its bad faith.

"Buffy : Season 8" Comic Book - Brad Meltzer Leaps Into the Buffyverse

Brad Meltzer loves Superman. In 2008, the New York Times best selling author led the charge to save Jerry Siegel's childhood home and he also connected the Man of Steel to the biblical tale of Cain and Abel in his most recent novel "The Book of Lies."

So it makes perfect sense that his first major comic project since his top-selling relaunch of "Justice League of America" for DC Comics would be a run on Dark Horse's "Buffy the Vampire Slayer : Season 8."

To quote Daniel 'Oz' Osbourne, "Huh ?"

Well, thanks to recent developments in the Buffyverse, and a hefty dose of magic, Miss Summers now possesses some pretty super powers. And in a situation similar to Superman's, who now lives in a world inhabited by thousands of Kryptonians, Buffy is currently fighting the good fight with an army of Slayers.

All of this makes the leap from Smallville to Sunnydale no greater than clearing a tall building in a single bound, and the leap Meltzer made to write the series for an arc was even easier.

"Joss and I started as email buds, and then he was kind enough to write the introduction for 'Identity Crisis.' But as to how I got involved, it was rather pretty simple : He asked," Meltzer told CBR News.

Meltzer's actual involvement in the literal extension of Whedon's expanded TV universe was first announced back in 2006, but it wasn't until last week, when Dark Horse solicited its comics for February 2010, that readers got their first taste of what's to come in the upcoming arc - namely, a reveal of who the "Big Bad" really is in Season 8.

Known only as Twilight, and bearing no relation to that other vampire series, the supervillain du jour is a masked man of mystery, and it's been teased that he has a history with Buffy. He'd also like nothing more than to rid the world of all magic, both good and evil, but his methods of eradication leave much to be desired.

While no stranger to the big reveal - having written seven whodunits since his debut novel, "The Tenth Justice," in 1998 - Meltzer wasn't prepared to spill too much just yet.

"If you look back at when we did 'Identity Crisis,' one of the first things I said was that I thought surprise had been gone from comics, and that it needed to come back. That's why we never teased the killer," said Meltzer. "It's why we didn't do preview copies. And it's why I wrote nearly all of the solicits myself. So, you'll just have to wait and see."

When pressed, he added, "You know when people say cliché nonsense like, 'This is what it's building to ?' Well, we mean it."

Meltzer is writing the penultimate arc of the series, which is expected to run four issues (#32-35), setting up Whedon for the grand finale. The superstar writer said that Whedon has been heavily involved in laying out his arc.

"I've been overusing ocean analogies lately, so let me stay with that theme : This is his boat. It's a big, gorgeous boat. But the best part is when you get to see him drive it," explained Meltzer. "In fact, the real reason I signed up was because of that opportunity to study and see someone I admire at work. I love seeing how people whose work I admire actually work. I can only learn and improve from that. And every single day, I want to learn and improve. So I'm thrilled that he's been so involved, rather than just tossing me the anchor."

While he was quick to gush over the mastermind of the all things Buffy, Meltzer also heaped praise on his creative partner on the arc, Eisner award winning artist Georges Jeanty.

"I'm sure every writer on 'Buffy' feels this, but I think we got his best work. Some of the moments are just so dead-on emotionally," said Meltzer. "That's all I ever look for in a comic artist. Can they pull off the emotional ?"

He then teased, "Plus, he draws the greatest geek moment I hope I've ever written."

Meltzer promised to check back with CBR News once his first issue of "Buffy the Vampire : Season 8" comes out in February, but in the meantime he's going to be working on two other books, one fiction and one non-fiction.

"I'm just finishing my first non-fiction book called, I think it'll be official soon, 'Heroes For My Son,' which will be out in May," said Meltzer. "It's a book I've been writing since the day my son was born - a collection of heroes throughout history from Jim Henson to Mr. Rogers to Rosa Parks. And I'm also working on my next novel, another thriller, which launches my first recurring character."

Best of the best of the best ?

As we get close to the the post-Thanksgiving, pre-New Year's rerun dead zone, I'm starting to do work on both my Best of 2009 list (which will be a bear, because so many good new shows debuted this year, at the same time that a lot of veteran contenders were still great), and also on a Best of the Decade package that I'm guessing will comprise multiple lists, spanning not only genre (drama/comedy/reality/etc), but also covering things like Best Season, Best Episode, possibly Best One-Season Wonder, maybe Best Import, etc. Some more thoughts on that - and my request for input - coming up after the jump...

Not sure yet. Still trying to suss it all out. But the goal is to spread the wealth as much as I can, because the '00s were a great decade for TV, so no show will appear on more than one list.

I more or less know what most of the series contenders are - and if you've been reading me for a while, you can figure some obvious ones out, like "The Wire," "The Sopranos," "Freaks & Geeks," "Arrested Development," etc. - and just have to figure out how to divvy them up. But the lists for best season (of a show that overall isn't great enough to qualify for a best series list) or best episode (ibid) may require more thought. The best seasons of "Buffy," for instance, were in the '90s, but "Once More With Feeling" (pictured above) or "The Body" might earn a spot on the episodes list. ("Hush," alas, was the final episode aired in 1999, or it would be the pick.)

So I'm curious : if you leave out the obvious contenders listed above (and shows like "The Office" and "BSG"), what are either some great episodes or great seasons from shows that you think merit end-of-decade recognition ?

The Charge

"That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind."

Opening Statement

Oops. I was reading the brief synopsis of Moonshot on Amazon, trying to determine if this would be something I wanted to review. When I finished reading it I decided in the affirmative, requested the disc, and it arrived in my mailbox a few days later. Shortly thereafter I put it into my PS3, started to watch it, and instantly said "Oops."

Facts of the Case

Moonshot is a fact-based drama detailing the generalities of the historic Apollo 11 landing on the moon. It starts with President John F. Kennedy's decree that we should land a man on the moon by the end of that decade, and it ends with Neil Armstrong (Daniel Lapaine, The 10th Kingdom), Buzz Aldrin (James Marsters, Torchwood), and Michael Collins (Andrew Lincoln, Afterlife) back on Earth, newfound heroes of the space age.

The Evidence

Why does my review start with an "oops" and does that imply bad things for Moonshot ? The "oops" is because my interpretation of the movie's description was of a pure, non-fiction telling of the story of Apollo 11. That it would be comprised completely from actual footage from the event and events that led up to the landing. Hence my surprise when it started and it became instantly apparent that this was a "fact-based drama" of said events. I will admit that I wasn't too pleased upon this discovery. My brain was ready for grainy footage, dull interviews, and lots of dry facts. Luckily that isn't the case.

Moonshot, in using actors to inform viewers about this monumental moment in history, is pretty darn good. Shown earlier in 2009 on The History Channel, Moonshot not only shows you what you already know about The Eagle's landing, but it also gives you key moments in the lives of those three astronauts in the preceding years. It conveys how they ended up being the chosen three ; how it was determined Armstrong would be first on the moon ; and how other small events molded the men and their character.

Perhaps you're pondering just how much fiction may be in this fact-based drama. That's a good question. The movie begins with a quick introduction by the real Buzz Aldrin who tells us that what we are about to see is fact, maybe not exactly how it happened, but very true to the situation and how it all falls into history. With Mr. Aldrin's word, I take what I saw in Moonshot as fact. And in that, I learned many a thing about Apollo 11 that I never had asked before. In retrospect, being a semi-astronomically interested guy, I wonder why I never asked these questions. I'm happy to have made this unexpected discovery.

Moonshot is a well-constructed made-for-television movie. Acting, set design, and direction/cinematography all give the story the gravitas and scope it deserves. Each of our male leads make you believe they are astronauts, exhibiting Armstrong's calmness, Aldrin's vigor, or Collins' thoughtfulness. I'll give extra props to Lapaine and Marsters. Lapaine was instantly recognizable as the introverted Armstrong. You could see in his acting what Armstrong was and would become in his later years. And Marsters, though I never watched Buffy, is very much tied to that role ; but I never once had a moment to let my thoughts wander out of his performance. It also helps their performances by having sets that convey the reality of the situation. When at home, it looks like home ; when at NASA, it looks like a "space port ;" and when on the moon, well, it looks just about right. And all this was directed well and nicely shot by Richard Dale and Paul Jenkins (who are both "television guys").

The Blu-ray disc comes with the usual good news and bad news. The good news is the transfers. Video is a clean 1.85:1, 1080p, transfer that is rich and bold, with strong, lifelike colors, deep blacks, and an impressive level of detail. I didn't see any substantial flaws. Audio is a little less good news, with two options : a Dolby 5.1 (lossy) or PCM 2.0 (uncompressed). The packaging only lists the PCM track, and that instantly made me unhappy as I cannot understand any Blu with a 2.0 mix…well, with certain caveats of course. But this, being brand new, certainly should have a 5.1 mix, and it does. So let's start with the Dolby mix, and the best word for this track is muted. Everything sounds refrained, maybe even slightly dull and muted ; nothing is especially crisp or robust. True, there aren't any hints or distortion or hiss, dialogue is always clear ; yet it sounds diminished. But when you flip over to the PCM mix, it opens up. You can hear a distinct difference between the two, with the PCM feeling wider. Yes, you lose the surrounds, but it may be the better choice of the two. Then we have the bad news, the bonus features. They are weak : just a couple photo galleries, bios, and a jukebox that will play music from the movie. For such an important event, surely you could have included just a bit more ?

The Rebuttal Witnesses

You need actors to convey the story of man's landing on the moon ? Isn't there enough real television footage available ? Then you let that spiky-haired blonde vampire portray one of the most important astronauts ? What kind of silly, joke production is this ? No wonder Neil Armstrong won't come out of his house !

Closing Statement

Though initially disappointed by my erroneous deduction of the material, I quickly swept away those thoughts and was delighted by the production and story presented to me in Moonshot. It's a quality production, with quality transfers, but it's missing quality bonus materials. And because I like the story, I recommend you keep your eyes out for a repeat of it on The History Channel. Though the disc has no significant flaws, I don't feel this warrants a purchase. But, if you are a fan and really want it, you'll have no qualms with your purchase.

The Verdict

Moonshot is hereby found guilty of faking its moon landing.

Good-bye, Dollhouse, It's Been Nice ; Hope You Find Your Paradise

To quote Joss Whedon's favorite musical creator, I'm sorry/grateful that Dollhouse was canceled. (Basically, my feelings mirror those of our wonderful recapper Joy Press, who tweeted, "It had potential. But like a lot of people, I was too ambivalent about Dollhouse to feel sad about cancellation.")

But I'm unambiguously happy that Whedon will get to do something else, whether it's Dr. Horrible 2 : The Horribling or that new digital studio he's supposed to be founding — the one I dream will turn him into the entrepreneurial Moses of online distribution. And while I'm flipping all over the emotional dial, I'm irritated by Lisa De Moraes's acrid suggestion that the show flopped because Whedon was money-hungry : "Joss Whedon needs to think more about his fans and less about his wallet. If he did, he would do his work for a cable network which can sustain a show that attracts this sized audience. He did not serve you well. Shame on him."

From my POV, this is crazy-talk, since from what he's said in interviews, Whedon developed the Dollhouse concept in the first place because Eliza Dushku (a friend since her role on Buffy) already had a development deal with Fox and asked him to collaborate on a vehicle for her. For better or worse, he's spent his adult life as an ideological populist, trying (à la The Simpsons) to plant subversive myths in mass culture. Now, this particular subversive myth definitely didn't work — not in the ratings, not in Dushku's performance. (The role Whedon had written to demonstrate her versatility highlighted exactly the opposite trait, while her unspellably named castmates, Dichen Lachman and Enver Gjokaj, kicked ass in their multiple roles.)

I certainly don't think that Dollhouse's fate makes Whedon the martyred Christ of network villainy, but it also doesn't mean he is the villain himself. There's such a thing as an interesting failure, and that's the category I'd put Dollhouse in : At once ambitiously conceived and weirdly unbaked, it had moments, even whole episodes, of brilliance. In the end, it was a failed genre experiment, in which a feminist sci-fi creator tried to use a police-procedural format (the type most frequently used as an excuse for endless close-ups of nude female corpses) to stage a metaphor about false consciousness and sex slavery.

In a way, maybe the series is even more admirable because it now looks, in retrospect, so truly impossible to pull off. Unlike something as purely girl-powered as Buffy — a juvenile myth with adult philosophical resonance — Dollhouse was designed to freak viewers out from the start. When it was kicking on all engines, the series was a sick-making essay about rape culture, and I've never seen one of those hit a mass audience. (Although it had a strange thematic sibling this year in AMC's Mad Men, another ambiguous dream-world stocked with brainwashed women.)

For those still grieving, here are some Dollhouse epitaphs — plus one proposal for the future of Whedon that I personally hope comes true :

James Poniewozik admires the show's ambition but says that "Fox gave it as much of a chance as it reasonably could have."

And Devin Faraci argues that Whedon belongs online :

"Whedon needs to fully leap into the world of direct to DVD and On Demand programming. He's already dipped his toe in those waters with Dr. Horrible's Sing-a-long Blog, which was an artistic success and apparently fiscally successful enough to warrant an impending sequel. Instead of going through a network, dealing with their interference and their programming whims and the need to appeal to a very wide audience so as to sell time to Viagra advertisers Whedon can concentrate on serving his fanbase with his vision ...

Imagine a world where a show like Arrested Development or Battlestar Galactica isn't constantly in fear of getting the axe, where shows don't have to dumb it down to reach the widest audience, where creators don't have to worry about skittish advertisers, where fans put up or shut up by supporting what they really like."

James Marsters - Why We Need Spike

I can be silent about it no longer. Someone needs to address the 500 pound gorilla in the room and I am no longer willing to just sit here and pretend like it does not exist. I will be the one who bravely steps foreword into the light and proclaims aloud “The time has come for Spike to return.”

We need Spike. There, I said it. I put it out there. TV has not been the same since he left the airwaves. Let me tell the tale of how he came to be, how he came to leave, and how he needs to come again.

In the beginning, there was Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and it was good. But then the Whedon said Bring me James Marsters to play a one shot villain. And they did and James was good. In fact, James was very good. So great was he that the Whedon then exclaimed “Nay, let it be know that the character played by James Marsters known as Spike will not be killed off as the script proclaims, but rather live on as a repeat antagonist. So sayeth the Whedon, so shall it be done.”

And so it cam to pass just as the Whedon foretold. Spike was allowed to live at the end of the episode Halloween and return to taunt Buffy again and again and again.

Time passed, and the fans began to like to the villainous Spike, his toothy grin, his devilish smile and the spark of mischief that lived in his eyes. They liked his banter and his razor sharp wit. And the fans cried out to the Whedon and said unto him This character Spike, we like him so. But if he continues on his path of evil he will eventually need to be slain by the vampire slayer. This we do not seek. Rather can he not some how become good ?

And the Whedon heard the cries of his fan base and thought on it. Then, in the brilliance that is Joss he did indeed not let the cries of the fans fall on deaf ears, but rather harkened unto them.

Since these were the days before James Marsters went on to play Officer Mars in the TV show Without a Trace , before he played Brainiac on Smallville and was still living in an apartment in LA while performing with his band “Ghost of the Robot” on weekends, James was inclined to accept a large role into the much acclaimed TV series. And so it was that the writers of the Whedon had Spike captured by a government agency where they had a microchip installed in his head which rendered him impotent to injure humans without pain. The fans watched this plotline unfold on the series and decided it was good.

And there were episodes a plenty in which Spike was snarky and likeable, more so than some of the long time and established characters. And the fans began to become uneasy and call out again unto the Whedon.

“Hear us oh Whedon,” they cried, “we like what you have done but now we ask more of you. We want very much to see a relationship develop between Buffy and Spike. Our Buffy fan-fiction is not as good as you can write. We need you to show us the way.”

And the Whedon listened to the cries of this fan base, for they are the ones who really purchased his house and car and other expensive stuff when you get right down to it. The Whedon turned to his team of writers and said unto them “Gather close and hear my words. The fans, they cry out to me day and night and I cannot ignore them, for I desire a boat, sleek and fast. We must deliver unto the people what they ask.”

And so it came to be. Spike and Buffy came to know each other in the biblical way and the fans rejoiced, for it was good. I mean really good. So good that to this day the Buffy Spike kiss is mentioned on the top 10 lists of hottest television sex scenes ever.

And the people were pleased, and there was much rejoicing.

And this was all done in the days before James Marsters signed on to play Lord Piccolo for the Dragonball movie.

These were known henceforth as the Golden Age of Marsters. And it was in this most abundant time that he did do the narration for The Dresden Files series of Audio books. James as the narrator, the voice of Harry Dresden, a wizard for hire who worked in the city of Chicago. Jim Butcher, author of the books was himself quoted as having said he did the happy Snoopy dance when he heard the news.

A dark cloud began to form and move over the land threatening to destroy the joy of millions. Evil network moguls at UPN delivered their words unto 20th Century Fox, Mutant Enemy, and the Whedon. They declared Buffy the Vampire Slayer would be on television no longer except in re-runs and syndication. There was much wailing and gnashing of teeth from the fans.

No, they cried out to the Wheaton, you cannot do this to us. We have come to love these characters and what will become of Spike ? Can he not move to LA and join the cast of your other show, Angel ?

The Whedon was angered by the unscheduled cancellation of his TV show that he had nurtured and did as the people asked. It was through the intervention of the Whedon that James Marsters was offered an opportunity to move his character to LA to join the cast of the TV show Angel.

And as this was in the days before small part move roles in “PS, I Love You” and James was still inclined to working and making money, he accepted the opportunity and life was again good. There was much rejoicing from the fans.

And so it came to pass that Spike came to the City of Angels and did join the staff of Wolfram and Hart, and there too he did steal the show for he was well loved by the Whedon and was given the best lines and story hooks. The fan base watched ever-increasing number ever week to see what sort madness he was going to cause. Plotlines were never so good.

But then the great evil that is the-powers-that-be again raised it's ugly head once more and did what Buffy the Vampire Slayer could not do – bring about the ends of days for the vampire we loved to hate and loved to love.

But the fans did so love their there Blondie Bear that they cried out unto the Whedon Help us, for we are about to be lost, what can we do ?

And the Whedon was sad at the loss of his shows and knew not how to save it. And for the first time ever the Whedon was not able to answer to cries of his people.

Spike was lost to the fans. The Whedon wrote of him no more. And so came in the darkness.

So why do we need Spike ? Its simple really – he was the only character on TV that was ever honest. He told the truth, especially when it hurt, but it was always relevant and pertinent, and I have to admit, he was never sexier than when he was delivering the hard core and honest truth. I guess it was because there was this evil little imp that lived in his smile or eyes. And this being an election year, we need some honesty. But more than that, we need Spike because, fan fiction, its just not cutting it.

Morena Baccarin - "V" Tv Series - Elizabeth Mitchell Ifmagazine.com Interview

Elizabeth Mitchell has in a few short years become one of ABC's flagship complex heroines. As Juliet Burke on LOST, she went from untrustworthy Other to self-sacrificing love of first Matthew Fox's Jack, then Josh Holloway's Sawyer, finally detonating a bomb at close range to save her friends. Now the L.A. born, Texas-raised actress is trying to save the world from an alien invasion as FBI Special Agent Erica Evans on ABC's remake of V.

Like many viewers, Mitchell was familiar with the original Eighties edition of V. “I watched it as a kid. It stuck with me – I had such a wonderful time watching it as a teenager with my parents," She says. "And I loved the escape of it. I mean, who doesn't love to escape now and then ?”

The original resistance heroes of V were portrayed by Marc Singer and Faye Grant. Does Mitchell feel like Evans is closer to one than the other ?

“I think it's a combination of the two,” she replies. “You have a highly emotional woman in a position of defense, in kind of a hero position, who's also incredibly in love [maternally speaking] with her son, who's going down this bad path. Plus, she's a single mom, so she's captivated by her son [Tyler, played by Logan Huffman], he's her life.”

Is there anything different about playing a character who's a mother as opposed to a character who's childless ? “Oh, yeah,” Mitchell replies. “I've said this quote before – it's my favorite. They say that when you have a child, your heart walks around outside of your body. And I think you don't really experience that until you have it. I feel that way with my [real-life] son. He walks around and I want him to be strong and vibrant and happy, but in my mind, I'm worst-case scenario mom. I'm like, I'd just love to gather him up and keep him close, and at sixteen [Tyler's age on V], you just can't.”

Given Evans' anti-Visitor sentiments, may we guess that she won't be too happy with Logan's budding romance with Visitor Lisa, played by Laura Vandervoort, erstwhile Kara on SMALLVILLE ? “I think that's safe to say,” Mitchell laughs. “She's beautiful, though.”

Playing an FBI agent appeals to Mitchell on a number of levels. “What I liked was the out and out fact that she was a hero to me. The people who do what she does are heroes to me, and I love how emotional she is. She doesn't guard her emotions too much, and I like the idea of trying that on and seeing how it feels. I think it might be really interesting. Plus she's tough and I love, love, love tough women.”

This is not to say that Mitchell purposely traded LOST for V.

“Oh, God, no !” she laughs. “No, I'd never been happier than when I was on LOST. No, I was asked to leave LOST. I would never have asked to leave, not in a million years. [Moving back to the mainland from Hawaii, where LOST is filmed] was pretty sudden, so it was hard to leave. I had to pack everything up. But I'm an actor, this is what I do, so I was fine – sad but fine.”

LOST message boards have run fiery and icy about Juliet ever since the character appeared. Mitchell says she's read some posts. “I've read some gorgeous stuff," she adds. "Of course, I'll read eight gorgeous things and then one ‘I just hate her, I don't care what other people think.' And then I want to go, ‘Why do you hate her ? [laughs] I like her.' But [there isn't as much board perusal] as you might think. I try not to let that in my life."

Does Mitchell know whether she'll be back on LOST in its final season – more to the point, is she allowed to say what she knows ? “They have all of their storylines done,” Mitchell says of the LOST writers. “They know exactly what they want to do. They've told me, I just can't say.”

If V generates the same sort of passionate fan base that LOST has, Mitchell is ready for it. “I love science-fiction fans," she notes. "I'm kind of a geeky person, so I love the minutiae.” She adds that she's also good at following the intricate plots on both series. “I've got one of those weird minds that holds onto all the pertinent details, especially where I'm concerned. Maybe I'm a narcissist, but anything that has to do with my character, I really keep close track of.”

Alan Tudyk, of FIREFLY/SERENITY fame, plays FBI Agent Dale Maddox, who Mitchell's character discovers in the pilot is really a reptilian Visitor. “I love him !” Mitchell exclaims of Tudyk. “I really love him. I told him that when I met him. He came in the dressing room and I go, ‘Hey, I love you !' He's like [nonplused], ‘Okay …' [laughs].He's so quick, he's so clever. We improvved [improvised] a lot of our stuff in our scenes. Like the whole thing about the car – ‘Can I drive ?' ‘No.' We played into the improv – it's so nice that we work so well together. I think he's so funny and articulate and good that to me, sharing screen time with him is such a pleasure, I just watched him. It was effortless for me.”

On camera, Mitchell's Evans is a little less fond of Tudyk's Maddox, puncturing and peeling off his skin to reveal the scales underneath. How was this accomplished ? “Alan did do most of that,” Mitchell explains, “but then there was a fantastic prosthetic that they put in his place, and that was [what was used for] the swipe. I mean, all that was just the two of us, just going at each other. They did a life cast of his face and then they had an entire thing completely underneath that, so it was pretty awesome.”

As a fan of both Tudyk and sci-fi in general, it's not surprising that Mitchell is also enthusiastic about FIREFLY, so is naturally excited about working with Morena Baccarin, another FIREFLY veteran, who stars on V as alien leader Anna. “I was a huge FIREFLY fan,” Mitchell reports, “which I told Morena when we met. I said, ‘Hi, I love you on FIREFLY !' She was very gracious.” When asked, Mitchell relates that Baccarin was likewise appreciative of her colleague's LOST work. “She's been very complimentary. She's a lovely lady.”

Mitchell is also a “huge STAR TREK fan,” she notes. “Go put that out there. When we were talking about my coming back to LOST, I was like, ‘Well, you know, I do like STAR TREK a lot,'” she laughs, referring to the fact that LOST executive producer J.J. Abrams is currently making the new STAR TREK films.

On V,Mitchell hasn't had scenes with anybody in a full alien body suit yet, but she's looking forward to it. “Not ‘full lizard,'” she qualifies. “They seem to be pretty hot, though. I want to see Morena as a lizard. What does she look like under all that gorgeous skin ? I think she'd have to be a pretty lizard – I mean, look at her. Good Lord.”

V has its fair share of green-screen effects, though so far, Mitchell says most of her scenes have primarily involved other actors. “I get real people. When I don't get real people, I get really freaky effects that still make me jump, so … We do have [hovering spaceship effects], but for some reason, I like that, because I have a great imagination, so it's fine for me.”

As far as whether there is really other intelligent life in the universe, Mitchell says she's a believer. “Remember when they took the Hubble Telescope and [aimed] it toward the darkest part of space and they found more stars and galaxies and worlds than they ever dreamed possible ? How can there not be something out there ?”

The political allegory of the new V caught Mitchell's attention gradually. “I didn't really feel like there was so much, because I felt like we were dealing with a situation where anything's possible, because it's sci-fi," says Mitchell. "But I do love the idea of it echoing our culture, echoing where we are. And I found that to be kind of amazing. I think that they wrote it before Obama came in and we all became so hopeful [in real life], so to me, it kind of speaks toward where we were before, and I think what you're dealing with now is a different scenario. You're dealing with when someone comes in and it's not hopeful and it's the worst possible thing that could happen and I think that's fascinating.”

V was originally scheduled to debut in 2010. Mitchell is pleased that it has premiered this year. “I was really happy," she says. "I think it was exciting to me in a lot of ways. When I read the second episode, I got even more excited, because I thought it went to the next level.”

Has Mitchell ever contemplated doing comedy ? “Yes. I think I love to laugh so much, I think my laugh's really annoying to people, so maybe not," she adds. "I've thought about it a lot. It seems to be this is where people want me right now, so this is where I am, but yeah, I think about it all the time.”

As far as both V and LOST, Mitchell relates, “I think that the main thing that I always try to say is, I'm insanely grateful. I'm grateful and I'm loyal and I will continue to be, so it's all good.”
