As I'm sure you know, the big question on everyone's mind is, what is the current status of the “Alice” movie project ? What are the realistic chances of seeing the “Alice” film go into real production ? What challenges are you faced with in getting it made ?

SF : The Alice project is presently in “turnaround” from Universal Studios. Jon and Erich Hoeber have written a very compelling feature film screenplay adaptation of the Alice game. Their screenplay will certainly serve as a jumping off point as we find a new studio home for the project. In terms of the realistic chances of seeing the Alice project being produced, all I can say is that I have invested (along with Julie Yorn and Karen Lauder, my producing partners on the project) a lot of time and effort in this project. We will get it made. I offer my eight year effort to get the best version of the Max Payne film produced as proof of my tenacity as a film producer. Every film produced is a challenge. The major film studios are producing fewer movies every year, so to have one of them be yours is a very special experience. On the positive side, the Alice in Wonderland mythology is wonderfully compelling, and is an indelible concept in the minds of studio executives and the movie going public.

Is Sarah Michelle Gellar still attached to this project ? How did she get involved in the beginning ?

SF : Sarah is not currently attached to the project. Her initial involvement was the result of a very talented and effective member of her management team who became aware of the project and pursued on Sarah's behalf.

There are rumors of Marcus Nispel being committed as the director and Jean Marsh getting picked for the part of the Queen of Hearts. Is there anything to these whispers ?

SF : Marcus was at one point attached to direct the Alice film. He is not involved with the project at this time. I'm looking forward to seeing his take on the retelling of Friday the 13th when it comes to theaters next year. I can't say that I have ever been aware of Jean Marsh's involvement with the project.

Several years ago, it was made known that there would be a movie based on the video game Alice, a critically acclaimed re-invention of Alice in Wonderland that finds its heroine returning to a dark and sinister version of Wonderland as a young adult after her family is killed in a fire. Understandably affected and unhinged by both the events in the real world and her surreal adventures on the other side of the looking glass, Alice is now a disturbed individual. Director Marcus Nispel (2003's The Texas Chainsaw Massacre) and Sarah Michelle Gellar have long been attached to the project, which has been floundering in development limbo since its inception.

While promoting her ensemble film The Air I Breathe (a fantastic story of intricately intersecting lives, in theaters January 25), Sarah gave us an update on Alice, reaffirming her commitment to the project and inspiring hope that this twisted fairy tale will make its way to the big screen. Here's what she had to say...

RadioFree.com : Are you still doing Alice ?

SARAH : Hopefully. I mean, it's a passion project of mine. It's a story that I'd love to see. I'm fearful at this rate that I'm going to be the Queen of Hearts because I'm going to be too old to be Alice. [laughs] It's something I'd really like to see done. And unfortunately, it was the victim of regime change in the studio. And I'm not getting out. And contrary to what you may have read, it's still my project. [laughs] And I'm still working diligently. So to all those Alice fans, I'm not giving up. Because I believe there is such a beautiful, crazy, cool, twisted story to be told there. American McGee's Alice : One of the spookiest and most acclaimed games of all time could hit cinema screens this year.

Loosely based on Alice in Wonderland, the game had wowed critics with its scary storyline and non-stop action.

The film has a tough act to follow and has been having its share of problems, including a change of production houses (has taken over from Dimension Films to 20th Century Fox to Universal Pictures) and hassles over the script.

However, it might just click on the box office, as it does have Sarah Michelle Gellar (she of Buffy the Vampire Slayer fame) in the title role.

It's the battle of the blonde former TV stars ! Sarah Michelle Gellar, who was originally set to star in Wonderland, has been replaced in the project by Maggie Grace, who most viewers know as whiny, shot-out-of-nowhere Shannon from Lost. Gellar, of course, kicked ass as Buffy the Vampire Slayer for seven seasons. Clearly Gellar's former TV character would win in this battle, but that's not the fight we're talking about here.

The Page Six article doesn't specify why Gellar left the project, but there have been rumors lately that she might be returning to television sometime soon. The article also includes the classic line “Grace was always director Marcus Nispel's second choice, according to sources. Ouch ! That's like a husband telling his second wife she was always his second choice, but she just had to wait her turn until the first one didn't work out.

The premise for Wonderland actually sounds pretty awesome. It picks up a few years after Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland, and finds our heroine a disturbed young woman recovering from the death of her parents. She, of course, returns to the land of Mad Hatter and the Queen of Hearts, and likely finds some truly disturbing adventures there. If thought the Cheshire Cat in Disney's Alice in Wonderland was creepy, imagine what they could have done with a PG-13 rating.

I don't have much of an opinion on whether Grace will be any good in the role—her character annoyed me on Lost, but the actress did a convincing job of falling in love with the true badass of the show, Sayid, as well as being a spoiled little rich girl. It might be interesting to see Alice re-imagined as a little brat all grown up, except instead of a brat unable to take care of herself in the real world, she knows Wonderland in and out. I'm not saying I understand how this could be pulled off ; it would just be awesome.

Sarah Michelle Gellar Not Headed to Wonderland

Sarah Michelle Gellar has been yanked as the title character in Alice, PageSix.com has learned. The former Buffy the Vampire Slayer star was to headline in the latest "Eat me, Drink me" flick inspired by Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland stories. But now a source tells PageSix.com that casting directors are in talks with another actress, former Lost star Maggie Grace.

Ironically, Grace, 24, is currently starring opposite Gellar, 30, in Suburban Girl, alongside Alec Baldwin. Though no contract has been signed, Grace was always director Marcus Nispel's second choice, according to sources. The movie, based on the computer game American McGee's Alice, is slated for release next summer.

The story picks up Alice's tale a few years after her first adventures in Wonderland. She's now a disturbed young woman mourning the death of her parents as she returns to the land of talking animals and the wicked Queen of Hearts.

But fear not, Buffy fans, all is not lost. According to recent reports, everyone's favorite vampire slayer might be set for a small-screen return. "Never say never," Gellar's rep, Leslie Sloane-Zelnick, tells us.

American Mcgee's ALICE, a video game released by Electronic Arts, may have been one of the best premises for a game in a really long time. Release in 2000, the game takes place after the events in ALICE IN WONDERLAND and the second adventure, THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS, which finds Alice institutionalized because people think that she's crazy. But then the White Rabbit comes back to her and asks her to save Wonderland from the crazed Red Queen.

Bad ass right ? Well for the talk of a film has been passed around for years, with many people attached to it but like all good things in Hollywood, the idea slowly faded away...until now.

According to the Hollywood North Report, Universal Pictures is gearing up to make the film based on the game.

Universal Pictures and Collision Entertainment are prepping for the film Alice, based on the video game American Mcgee's Alice.

The horror fantasy film will shoot in Langley, BC starring actress Sarah Michelle "Buffy" Gellar as 'Alice'.

Director is Marcus Nispel, from a script by Erich and Jon Hober, based on author Lewis Carroll's "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" and "Through the Looking Glass".

I can't say that I'm thrilled about casting choice, and the directing choice for that matter. I feel like it's going into a direction that may make it seem like a bad Renny Harlin film, rather than a good intellectual mind-f**k. Alice is set for a July 2008 release... If Nispel is directing, what does this mean for the FRIDAY THE 13TH remake ? Who knows, but more about ALICE as it happens.

This movie is currently scheduled for tentative release in 2007. Bullshit. American McGee's Alice was originally slated to make a jump to the big screen seven years ago when popular horror director Wes Craven signed onto the project with the Dimension films production company. However, due to writing personnel issues, the script for the movie was not completed until three years later. However, in 2004 production was moved from Dimension films to 20th Century Fox, and the next year it was moved again to Universal pictures. Universal, in turn, attached a new director and popular actress Sarah Michelle Gellar to the film for the lead role, but no other information has been made public since then.

The story behind Alice is quite intriguing to say the least. The film, which follows the same plot as the PC game, is set as a dark sequel to Lewis Carroll's famous Alice in Wonderland series. In the game, years after her experience in Wonderland, Alice becomes institutionalized while in a catatonic state due to the death of her family in a vicious fire. In an attempt to save her sanity, Alice retreats back to Wonderland in her own mind ; only to find that it is equally just as dark and twisted.

American McGee created a masterpiece with this game, but the story is still quite linear. The story behind Alice plays out pretty much in the same fashion as its predecessor, just in a much darker fashion. One can expect that this game would make just as smooth a transition to the big screen as the original books did, yet there is no planned production on this movie for now. That's probably the worst part, because the western horror film genre is crying for a dose of something new and domestic. Alice is both of those things, and I dare say Gellar does have the potential to nail the role perfectly.

Of all the movies we've looked at, I mourn the loss of Alice the most. If you can, dig up a copy of the game online or at a bargain bin and play through it. Preferably get a legit copy as the game's instruction manual is an interesting read all its own. Whether on the PC or in the theater, Alice is a twisted experience you can't afford to miss.
