September 26, 2007 - There's been a lot of casting news centering on Buffy the Vampire Slayer alums in the past week, so we thought we'd round it all up here. First there was an update on Charisma Carpenter (Buffy's Cordelia), who was rumored to be in the running for the celebrity edition of The Apprentice. TV Guide now reports Carpenter won't be on that series after all, but does have two new gigs lined up. Carpenter will be guest starring on an episode of the new FOX sitcom Back to You, and she also has joined ABC's Big Shots in a recurring role. Big Shots will re-team Carpenter with Veronica Mars creator Rob Thomas, who has joined that series as a consultant.

EOnline is reporting that James Marsters (Buffy's Spike) will not only have a new recurring role on Without a Trace this fall, but is also returning to Smallville later this season as Milton Fine, AKA Braniac, for a four episode stint. Meanwhile, TV Guide's Michael Ausiello says that Marster's fellow former vampire, Mercedes McNab (Buffy's Harmony), will be guest starring on the November 15th episode of Supernatural. Ausiello hints she may once more be playing a vampire on that series as well.

Meanwhile, Nicholas Brendon's (Buffy's Xander) official site, NickBrendon.com, has announced that the actor will be appearing on Criminal Minds in a guest star role as Kevin, described as "a computer expert who's part of the investigative team." The website says the role has the potential to be recurring.

Ausiello : I am an artist — I can't be bought. Rented, yes. But bought ? How dare you ? That said, the Nov. 15 episode ought to be a treat for Buffy/Angel fans, and not just because it's vampcentric, either. Mercedes McNab — the scene-stealer who played dumb blonde Harmony on both shows — has just been signed to guest as a toothsome chick who recalls for the Winchester boys the night she picked up more than a hangover while out clubbing.

You have, by now, had a lot of experience coming on to shows and playing in somebody else's sandbox. How has it been for you on Supernatural ?

BE : It's been good ! I worked for quite some time in the Whedonverse, and that's a pretty amazing ship. They function in different ways, you know. This is a very well run machine ; both of them were. The work life—good people were found, and both groups have a very healthy—too healthy work situations, and I like that about it. But, I learned certain things from Joss Whedon, and now I'm learning certain other things from Eric Kripke, cos with Joss—well, his shows were insane, and that's what I like about them ! This show is really down to the ground. I remember working on Angel ; I was working on a puppet show episode (“Smile Time”) and for the previous week's episode –it was basically the same office- they're working in a Nazi-submarine flashback episode (“Why We Fight”) ! You really know you're working on the strangest show on TV when those are back to back and no one's really batting an eye, exactly. That was really great, because it was sort of a stream-of-consciousness explosion happening there. This is, to me—this is designed, it's engineered. This is helping me with human character, because very clearly with Angel and Buffy, for example, or even Firefly, there's such a language of those shows, there's a distance from real emotion –even though those shows have very powerful emotion, there's a different kind of heightened way to present them- and this is really way down, close to the ground, that needs very different kinds of writing, and that's cool. I have fun.

There's a thin line between love and hate in Supernatural...

Kripke : True. We're going to see how it goes. We're going to see, 'Is there chemistry ? Are there sparks ?' What we're trying to do is what shows that we admire tried to do, like The X-Files and Buffy. Yes, The X-Files is about Mulder and Scully, but Skinner grew to play a part. The Lone Gunmen grew to play a part. Buffy had other characters that were coming in and out of the storyline, and they were fascinating characters. The trick is to not introduce them as love interests. The trick, we feel, is to introduce them as fleshed-out characters with their own inner lives, and then see what develops. And the other thing is, the girls are very separate and very different. And very rarely are they in the same episode, because they're each serving very different storylines. Ruby (Katie Cassidy) is this demon hunter, who is ruthless and a little crazy and rough around the edges, and doesn't share the same moral conscience that either of the boys share. A little unhinged in that way. There's going to be a big twist about Ruby very early on. As early as Episode 2 you're going to learn something very fascinating about Ruby.

Jeff Mariotte is the author of the series Witch Season and has also written many tie-in novels for various television shows such as Charmed, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel. In addition, Mr Mariotte is involved in the production of numerous comic books which includes his creation of the Weird West-style comic book series, Desperadoes. With his background in writing so many tie-in novels for cult shows, it seems fitting that Supernatural forms a part of his repertoire. And with Witch's Canyon due to be released in November 2007, we asked him if he'd be willing to answer a few questions ; the interview was done via email.

We want to thank you for agreeing to do this Q&A with us. We truly appreciate it.

Q : Congratulations on Missing White Girl ! Can you tell us a bit about the responses you've been getting ?

Thanks ! Fortunately, people seem to like it. It's a supernatural thriller, so combines horror elements with fast-paced suspense and even some police-procedural stuff.

Q : You have been writing a great amount of tie-ins for different TV shows. How did you get started ?

My first published novel, Gen13 : Netherwar, was a tie-in based on a comic book, and was written in collaboration with my friend Christoper Golden. Chris had done several tie-ins based on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and when his editor asked for a recommendation for another author, he suggested me. She tried me out on a book that adapted three episodes, then invited me to pitch a novel based on the new spin-off series Angel. I ended up writing more Angel novels than anyone else (in addition to co-writing the first Angel nonfiction series companion), so basically got into the game that way. Since then, other TV shows I've written tie-ins for include Charmed, Star Trek, Andromeda, Las Vegas, and CSI : Miami. I also have written tie-in comics/graphic novels based on CSI, CSI : Miami, and The Shield.

Q : You mentioned in an interview with Winchester Journals that you had a whole library of nonfiction supernatural books. How did you get interested in the supernatural ?

I think it came about because of my reading tastes. I've always been intrigued with stories of suspense and terror. About the same time I discovered writers like Robert E. Howard and H.P. Lovecraft, in the 1970s, there was a real boom in interest in the supernatural (astrology, numerology, witchcraft, etc.). I don't practice any of those things, but I was interested in reading about and studying them ; and the library took off from there.

Q : What made you decide to write about the supernatural element on which you based Witch's Canyon ?

I'm not sure I want to say too much about the supernatural element in Witch's Canyon, because part of the plot revolves around the Winchesters trying to figure out just what it is, since it doesn't seem to follow any of the normal patterns. It was really that aspect—the "symptoms," let's say—that drew me into writing the story.

Q : Witch's Canyon takes place after ‘The Usual Suspects' and before ‘Croatoan'. Are the events of ‘Croatoan' and ‘Crossroad Blues' going to find their way into the book ?

Most episodes don't have specific dates attached to them, so it's hard to say precisely what the book is "before" or "after" (because the book does have specific dates). But it's in that general neighborhood. And no, those events aren't dealt with in the book—the story stands completely apart from events of any particular episode.

Q : Are events from Supernatural : Nevermore [the first in the series of the tie-in books – WB] going to have an echo in Witch's Canyon ?

In a very loose way, yes. The books have a connection, not in plot but...well, you'll just have to see...

Q : In a recent interview, you spoke about new characters such as Juliet Monroe, Sheriff Jim Beckett and Harmon Baird. Can you tell us more about them, and perhaps about other characters as well ?

Again, there's not a lot I can say without giving away plot points. Juliet Monroe is a widow who lives on a ranch near the small town of Cedar Wells. Sheriff Beckett is the local lawman, who finds himself quickly over his head when the town's 40-year murder cycle starts up again. Harmon Baird is an old-timer who remembers the last couple of murder sprees.

Q : The heart of Supernatural is the relationship between the brothers. Does Witch's Canyon touch on that aspect of the show, or is the book more orientated toward the subject of the supernatural ?

You're right, that really is the heart of the show, and the most interesting aspect to me. Writing each brother by himself was difficult, because it is the interaction between them that makes it all work. I delved a little bit into their pasts and tried to analyse what it is about them that makes them mesh (and in many cases, clash) but always manage to work together to get the job done.

Q : Who has the final word on Witch's Canyon ?

I work exclusively with my editor. From there, I'm not sure precisely what the approval process is, or who has input.

Q : Did you receive feedback from the cast and crew ?

No. It's rare to hear from them about a tie-in product. Not unheard of—I've had good conversations with people on some shows, no feedback at all on others.

Q : Have you gotten any feedback from fans with regard to the other tie-ins, and if so, were they generally pleased with your work in relation to characterization, writing style and so forth ? What kind of response are you looking to get (if any) from fans of the show regarding the novel ?

For the most part, fans are pretty happy with the tie-in work I do. To me there are two factors that take precedence over everything else—having respect for the original property, and trying to get the character voices right. Obviously I also work hard to get continuity right, but sometimes shows contradict themselves, and things can come up on the show during the period between starting a book and it finally being published (not to mention, in the case of an ongoing series, even years after the fact) that completely contradict things I wrote in the books, so it's not always possible to avoid problems with that. But if the characters "sound" like themselves on the page, then fans know who's who and that the personalities they enjoy on-screen have transferred well. Respect for the original, to me, means faithfully representing what's been shown on-screen. Some fans object to that because they want the books to explore other areas—particularly those who are heavily invested in relationships between characters that may not be where they are on the show at the time the book is set—but I'm not here to cater to "shippers" of any couple, just to write books based on what really is happening on the show.

Q : Will fans be able to buy autographed copies of Witch's Canyon through Mysterious Galaxy ? [Mysterious Galaxy is an independent bookstore which specializes in mystery, science fiction, fantasy, and horror, owned by Jeff Mariotte, his wife and Terry Gilman - WB]

Yes. I don't know if the store will have autographed copies immediately upon the book's release, because that depends on my being there (it's in San Diego, and I live in rural Arizona), or shipping books back and forth. But as soon as possible and practical, I'll get books signed for the store.

Q : Will you be interested in writing another Supernatural tie-in ?

I'd love to if the chance comes up. There are many more stories that can be told with those characters and the vast supply of urban legends and supernatural concepts out there.

Q : Did you get a chance to read the comic books ? If so, what did you think ?

I've read the first issue. I was glad that the main story was written by Peter Johnson, because he's so involved with the show that he could tell the prequel story and we know it's representative of what Eric Kripke had in mind when he created it.

Q : Do you have any current or future projects ?

The next books to be published will be 30 Days of Night : Immortal Remains (July), based on the popular horror comic and written with Steve Niles, who created the comic, and Supernatural : Witch's Canyon. Sometime after that will be the CSI : Miami book, but I don't know what the schedule is on that yet. I'm working on some original graphic novels and comics, and I have one more 30 Days of Night book and another comic-based tie-in to do, as well as more original horror/supernatural thriller novels. So I'm plenty busy...

Is the CW's Supernatural (Thursdays at 9 pm/ET) "cooking" the numbers ? Are the Yellow-Eyed Demon's days numbered ? Have the writers been favoring Sam over Dean ? Series creator Eric Kripke answers those burning questions from TVGuide.com readers, and many others ! Plus : Kripke's very important message to the show's fans.

In Season 1's "Phantom Traveler," Dean mentions that the significance of the 40-minute flight time goes back to biblical numerology. Since 7 is also a biblical number, was the fact that there were seven survivors intentional ? I've always wondered about that.

Eric Kripke : I love how much our fans pay attention ! Yes, using the number 7 was intentional. We're always trying to drop in small but significant details, and we occasionally look to numerology. To give you another numerology hint : the Yellow-Eyed Demon re-entered the Winchesters' life 22 years to the day after it disappeared. Sam was 22 at the time. We chose that number intentionally.

You stated in a recent interview that you were originally working on a three-season plan, but now you're moving past that. Does that mean you intend the big bad Yellow-Eyed Demon aspect to end with Season 3, and that there will be a different driving force for later seasons ? Or will the YED always play a major role ?

Kripke : I think our story is larger than just the Yellow-Eyed Demon. I don't want to give too much away, but I will say this : Our heroes confront and converse with the Yellow-Eyed Demon in a way they never have before in Episode 21. And because the Demon's feeling charitable, he gives Sam some answers.

You've mentioned that "the war was starting" and everything would come to a head in this year's season finale. How do you imagine things wrapping up ? Will tying up so many loose ends open up more questions ?

Kripke : Our season finale is a two-parter, and we've been busting our asses to give the fans something really climactic and special. I think you'll be happy. And you're right - the war definitively begins. We definitely tie up some major story threads. We climax the "psychic children" story line, for example, as well as deliver a few other surprises. But we're telling a multiyear story, so in no way do we answer everything. Nor should we. We answer some questions ; we leave some hanging ; we ask new ones, too.

This is more of a comment than a question : I wanted to say thank you for all of the wonderful progress you and your crew have made with the show ! This season just keeps on getting better and better ! Please let everyone who works on the show know that we the fans really appreciate all of the hard work you guys put into it !

Kripke : Thank you. I really and truly appreciate that, as does the whole team. We're working hard to make a show we can be proud of ; we all really care about it, so it's gratifying that it's getting the response that it is.

However, I have to be shameless and say to the fans, If you love the show, please spread the word. Let your friends know there's a smart genre show on the CW, a show for people who dig Buffy and X-Files. Drag ‘em in front of the TV and make ‘em watch. We don't get a lot of marketing, and word of mouth is the only way we're gonna get a long, healthy series run. We need your help !

Do you think Papa Kent (John Schneider) from Smallville could join the show ?

Kripke : Sure, why not ? Bo Duke could be rocking the General Lee, and race the Impala. They'll jump a bridge, and we'll freeze-frame midair and go to commercial.

This is going to sound facetious, but I am at least half serious : Were you traumatized by a mobile as a child ? (I have to admit there is something a little creepy about them !)

Kripke : No major mobile trauma. It's funny, I get questions like this a lot. Because of the show, people wonder if I had a disturbed childhood, or tortured puppies, stuff like that. But I'm a normal Ohio boy from a tight-knit family - though my friends and family do seem surprised that I'm coming up with such twisted crap. About once a month my sister calls me and says, "What the hell's wrong with you ?"

A lot of plot points have been set in motion to further the development of Sam as a character. We are continuously reminded of the fact that Sam is integral to the central mythology, and in one way or another the majority of this season's episodes have all served to raise questions about his destiny. However, because of this, Dean has largely become, in my opinion, a "reactive" character in the sense that most of his actions simply seem to involve reacting to Sam's crisis. So my question is, will Dean ever have his own arc or story line, one that isn't based just on Sam ?

Kripke : Well, first of all, stay tuned. There's the beginning of a major Dean story line in the season finale two-parter. But I have to admit, I've heard this comment before, and I just don't get it. Not even a little. It's never been a show about Sam. It's always been a show about family, much more than it is about anything else. The mythology is only an engine to raise issues about family. A big brother watching out for a little brother, wondering if you have to kill the person you love most, family loyalty versus the greater good, family obligation versus personal happiness.... These are all issues that Dean faces, and in my opinion, they are just as rich, if not richer, than psychic children and demonic plans. Fans seem to worry unnecessarily at times, and I'll say this : It's never going to be a show about just Sam, or just Dean for that matter. It's always going to be a show about brothers. So quit worrying.

Every time the boys get in and out of the Impala the doors squeak. It wouldn't be the Impala without it, but is that a sound effect ? Because in the blooper reel on the DVD, that door did not squeak at all. Also, what kinds of extras are you planning for the Season 2 DVD ?

Kripke : Those squeaky doors are the work of our brilliant sound [editing] guys. As for the DVD, we're going to do two commentaries ; a documentary about bringing the season finale from script to screen, warts and all ; some Easter eggs ; and the coolest feature, where we've rounded up a bunch of history and folklore experts to give commentary on the urban legends used in the show. It kinda blows me away, having legit academic commentary about our little bloodfest....

It seems like having the cops and FBI on Sam and Dean's tails would severely cramp their style, not to mention their ability to hunt, over the long run. Any chance this story line will be resolved this season ? Will the guys be cleared ? And why do I keep thinking that there is something fishy about Agent Hendricks ?

Kripke : We bring Henricks back for an episode before the end of the year. But no, we don't resolve the fed story line this season. We wanted to... but we sort of got too busy dealing with demons and wars and various apocalyptic stuff. But we plan on getting back into it for Season 3. And yes, you're right, the feds cramp the boys' style for sure. But don't forget, Sam and Dean are expertly trained, very clever and cagey, and they know how to drop off the grid when they need to. When they don't want to be found, they can't be found.

In recent interviews, you've stated that the last few episodes will pull the threads together of the special kids/Sam's destiny/myth arc, and Sam's and Ava's roles. My question is : How many years have you given yourself to tell the entire story of the Winchester brothers, and are you on track with the overall series arc ?

Kripke : Yes, we're on track for the overall series arc. Some things were accelerated and other stories took longer to tell than I thought they would, but overall, we're on track. I've always thought that we could tell this story properly in five years. That's what I'm currently aiming - and hoping - for. But I love the show, and if it turns into a monster hit that goes on for eight years, I guess I'll adjust accordingly. You know. Weddings. Raven Symone. Maybe we'll literally have Dean jump a shark like Fonzie did.
