Possession's Gellar Pie-Eyed

Sarah Michelle Gellar, who will appear opposite Lee Pace in the supernatural thriller Possession, told SCI FI Wire she enjoyed working with the star of ABC's hit Pushing Daisies, who takes on a role quite different from that of his TV pie-maker.

"It's just this sort of weird and crazy dynamic between Lee and I that goes from hate to love and sort of back and forth," Gellar said in an interview. "It's pretty cool. It's small and contained. It's only about three characters."

Gellar plays a lawyer whose brother-in-law (Pace) is an ex-con who moves in with the newlyweds. Gellar's character does not get along with the husband's brother.

"Then the two brothers are in a terrible car accident," Gellar said. "They're both comatose, and [the movie] follows her for a little bit while she's sort of losing everything that she thought she had, what she possessed that was important to her in her life."

As Gellar's character unravels, she gets a phone call saying that one of the brothers has awakened. "Unfortunately, it's not her husband," she said. "It's the brother. He believes that he's her husband, and she has to take him home, obviously, because he has no insurance."

Gellar's character must decide whether her husband has returned in the body of the brother-in-law or whether she's merely longing for the return of her old life. "[It's] the idea of, if you could have your love back, how far would go to keep it ?" Gellar said. "What would you believe ? What would you turn your head to ?"

Possession opens Feb. 29. It's one of four movies that Gellar has appeared in that open in the next few months, including The Air I Breathe, which opens Jan. 25.

The debut trailer from Possession starring Sarah Michelle Gellar due out February 22, 2008 from Yari Film Group has been released.

Sarah Michelle Gellar stars as Jess, a woman whose life is torn apart when her husband, Ryan (Michael Landes), and brother-in-law, Roman (Lee Pace), crash in a horrific car accident. Both brothers end up in comas, with little hope of recovery. But Roman wakes up and, when he does, insists he is her husband. As time goes on, Jess struggles with the possibility that the spirit of her beloved husband has returned to her in the body of her brother-in-law, or that something much more sinister is at work. The film stars Sarah Michelle Gellar (TV's BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER, THE GRUDGE), Lee Pace (TV's PUSHING DAISIES, THE GOOD SHEPARD) and Michael Landes (FINAL DESTINATION 2, LUCKY 13). POSSESSION was directed by Joel Bergvall (VICTOR) and Simon Sandquist (VICTOR).

Gellar Talks Possession

Sarah Michelle Gellar, who stars in the upcoming supernatural-tinged psychological drama Possession, told SCI FI Wire that the film deals with a woman whose husband and brother-in-law both end up in comas, when the brother-in-law awakes and claims to be her husband. "It's sort of like a play and a movie all combined," Gellar said in an interview while promoting her upcoming SF movie, Southland Tales. "It's about a woman, a young ... career-minded woman, married to a more artistic type, and they live with her brother-in-law because he's out on parole—that's how they met ; she was his lawyer. And her and the brother-in-law don't get along very well. And there's a terrible car accident. And they're both in a coma."

Gellar's character finds her life turned upside down. "And she gets a phone call one day that one of them has woken up, but you don't quite know who," Gellar said. "When she gets there, she finds out it's her brother-in-law. They can't stand each other. And her husband is still obviously in a coma. And she has to take him home. ...

"But the odd thing is, he believes that he's her husband," Gellar added. "And the question is : Is it her husband ? Is he faking ? Does she want her life back so bad that she's willing to believe [it] and convince herself about something that's not there ? Or is it possible that somehow his love came back to her ?"

In addition to onetime Buffy the Vampire Slayer star Gellar, the movie also stars Lee Pace (TV's Pushing Daisies) and Michael Landes (TV's Special Unit 2). As for the title, it was previously Addicted. "Depends on what week you catch the title," Gellar joked. "I'm still not entirely sure what the title is." Possession is slated for release sometime in the spring of 2008.
