In the world of computer gaming, nothing screams “quality” like a licensed tie-in. Unfortunately, it's also prone to scream the word “bad” immediately beforehand. This is an accepted truth in the world of computer games – you don't buy a licensed title expecting anything more than a cheap, rushed, shallow cash-in. It makes sense – with licensors hovering over the creative process, and usually a time limit in the form of, say, a cinematic release date to synchronise with, there's no room for error, and that means no room for invention.

Licensed comics are rarely any different. Where movies tend to have licensed computer games, there's a decades-old trend of TV shows having a licensed comic. Even so, after over 30 years of trying, they're still almost universally crap. With the time and storytelling restrictions vastly different to game tie-ins, what is it that makes licensed comics the utter quality black hole that they so frequently are ? I've been considering it and I think I've identified the three mistakes that licensed comics make. A few case studies, and I hope to illustrate exactly why only the most dedicated fan should go within 10 feet of a licensed comic.

1. “No budget” syndrome – One of the first things you can be guaranteed to read when someone brings an existing property to comics is a statement along the lines of “Well, of course, since we have no budget restrictions, we can do anything we want, as long as it can be drawn !” A fair enough statement, yes, but on closer inspection, what does it really mean ?

In the case of IDW's comic-based “Season Six” of Angel, it means taking Los Angeles to hell and having Angel fight a ludicrous number of massively-proportioned demons every issue – something that makes the series almost impossible to take seriously. After all, the Angel show we remember featured a small number of demons, almost always human-like in appearance. It was absolutely a budget restriction, but one that kept the show grounded in believability, as much as a show about a vampire detective could be.

With this new freedom to depict demons of all shapes and sized, the reality constructed over five years of the TV show has been utterly discarded in favour of bigger, better things… that don't remotely match what the viewers of Angel remember. The solution to this one is simple – let the TV show that you're adapting inform the look of the comic, and stick religiously to that. Any time you're thinking “wow, we could never have done this on TV !” that's a sign that you shouldn't be doing it.

2. No Actors – A hard one to get around. The appeal of any TV show is basically down to two things. The acting and writing. A comic has plenty of writing going into it – comic and TV scripts are fairly similar, after all – but the acting, well, that's another matter. IDW are currently publishing a continuation of Star Trek : TOS, but really, what's the point of Kirk without Shatner ? (JJ Abrams, I'm looking at you !)

Even Dark Horse's fantastic Buffy : Season 8 comic struggles with this one. The artist on that series, Georges Jeanty, does brilliant work, recalling the look of the actors while still drawing the characters, rather than the people who played them, and the dialogue in Buffy was always so well-defined that you can almost hear the characters speaking their lines, even on the page.

Almost, anyway. Even in what is arguably the industry's best ever licensed comic, there's something missing. A voice here, a facial expression there – no matter how good it looks, part of the essence of the characters is always going to be locked into the actor, somewhere. You can no more draw the “real” Buffy than you can replace Sarah Michelle Gellar with another actress. The two are inseparable, and that's one element a comic can never compete with.

3. No Canonicity – This one is what really does it for me. The problem lies in the fact that the comics, no matter how good the stories in them are, simply don't count. It seems a bizarre claim to make, but let's face it – we're all geeks here, and we all understand the difference between a story that “did” happen – i.e. anything in a Star Wars film – and stories that only happened until a film says they didn't – i.e. anything in a Star Wars comic, novel, computer game or god forbid, CCG.

As a result, you're left wondering whether there's any point to what you just read. The characters can't change and the plots can't really be advanced. Is the story itself enough ? Often, the answer is “no”. Again, there have been stabs at addressing this. The creator of cult-hit Disney cartoon Gargoyles is telling new, in-canon stories set after the end of the cartoon. Buffy : Season 8 is written by Joss Whedon - it doesn't get any more official than that – and yet, Whedon recently admitted if he had the chance to make a new TV show, all bets were off and contradicting the events of the comic wouldn't keep him up at night.

One wonders just how important even an in-canon comic can really be – after all, they're a small industry – on TV Buffy was measuring its viewers in millions per episode, but the comic series is doing well to be selling over 100,000 copies per issue. Even with the best intentions, comics are way, way down the ladder of importance. Why worry about upsetting 100,000 fans if another 4.9 million are happy ? Kevin Smith proved as much when he cannibalised massive sections of his own "in-continuity" Jay and Bob comic into the movie, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. The comics, no matter how official they might be, no matter how much good faith they're written in, only happened until something more important says they didn't.

Ultimately, there's very little that can be done to make a licensed comic stand up to reasonable quality. While Buffy : Season 8 is fantastic, it's a small ray of light in a field plagued with half-arsed cash-ins. Only the most obsessed fans should bother with anything else – that's the way it's always been, and unfortunately, despite genuine attempts to legitimise tie-ins - that's pretty much the way it's going to stay.

April 2, 2008 - Welcome to another IGN Comics review. If you've been here before, you know the drill. If you haven't, here's how it works. We grade on a 100-point scale. Numerically this is represented as a 10 point system with 0.1 increments. These scores also translate to particular labels. To learn more about our rating system, look for the red link near our final score at the bottom. For trade, arcs and manga reviews, we'll comment on art and writing along with a final score. Weekly books get a faster treatment due to their shorter length.

One thing to keep in mind is we're providing you with multiple reviews and multiple scores. To keep things simple (for you and for us), we're limiting this to one Additional Take. The Additional Take reviewer will have his or her score listed directly after their opinion. The Final Score is not affected by this and is directly determined by the Main Reviewer (who is listed in the article's byline).

Any time you feel like commenting on our reviews, you may. Our weekly review index, which is published late Wednesday night, has a comment section. Every review we publish does as well (look below). You can also find our message boards by clicking the link on the left-hand side. Enjoy !

I'm sure you've heard, unless you were hiding under a rock for the entirety of the past month, that the Buffy the Vampire Slayer comic has become a sort of cause célèbre of late. Well, for the most part, the lucky thirteenth issue of Buffy Season Eight steers the series away from the world of controversy, and back into the less back-lashy settlement firmly established through the title's first year of existence- a world, I might add, that continues to feel more and more similar to the one we grew accustomed to during the TV show's storied seven year run.

First of all, the involvement of Dracula, and the investigation into his apparently replicated powers, helps the issue feel a great deal like a standard episode of the Buffy TV show. The whole "Scooby Gang" aspect seems back in full force, and I couldn't be happier about that. Also helping is the fact that the villains featured in the story feel properly blasè. Most Buffy baddies, whether from the early episodes with Spike and Drucilla, or the haunting final season featuring Nathan Fillon as a murderous preacher, always featured a whimsical side which properly matched the show's tone of combined horror and humor. These villains were insanely evil, but not void of a sense of amusement, which in turn made them scarier, if that makes sense. Goddard's crew of mutated Asian Vampires seem to be enjoying what they're doing, which is perfectly in step with Whedon's unique vision for antagonists.

Not only are the main plot elements, along with certain character moments, beginning to feel more in tune with the original series' tone, but some of the newer additions to the Buffy canon are starting to feel more at home as well. At first the implementation of a world-wide slayer task force felt a little too large of scale for my particular taste, as one of my favorite aspect of the television show was the relative amount of intimacy allowed for by a small crew of characters. However, as I grow accustom to the army's existence, I'm beginning to enjoy the character development it offers to some of the main cast. Seeing Buffy revered as a general, and how she's adapted to that particular role, has felt like a natural evolution for the character. Buffy's been in a position of command before, but never as the front for an organization as vast as this one. Goddard does a great job in this issue of asserting the heroin as a burgeoning adult leader, as opposed to a foppishly young administrator.

Jeanty's artwork also grows on me each month. Any early nitpicks I may have had with certain character's faces or demeanors, are quickly fading with every installment. The artist had the unenviable task of defining an official canonized aesthetic for the comic book world of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and as I get used to his depictions, the ensuing familiarity truly helps to re-establish a link to television show that may have been missing from the early issues.

It is easy to cry and moan over some of the recent revelations in Buffy Season Eight. Not only easy, but fair. But whether one agrees with these events or not, it's hard to argue the constant improvements the title has managed over the last few story arcs. Again, the series is beginning to feel continuously more authentic, and shouldn't be missed by any fan of the Whedonverse.

When artist Karl Moline co-created futuristic vampire slayer Melaka Fray with Buffyverse kingpin Joss Whedon for the Dark Horse spinoff miniseries, “Fray : Future Slayer,” in 2003, he hoped he would one day return to the character.

Moline's prayers were answered when Whedon reignited the franchise with the launch of the bestselling “Buffy the Vampire Slayer : Season 8” ongoing series last fall and decided to add Fray to the fray in a new Whedon-penned arc beginning in July's issue #16.

In this exclusive first interview regarding the new arc, Moline told CBR News that an in-continuity extension of the Buffy television series comic wasn't even on the radar in 2003, so this is not how he expected his creation to return. “I don't think they even knew that the Buffy series was coming to an end at that point,” explained Moline. “Certainly, they didn't dream up us doing a Season 8 in comics. I think we always had in the back of our minds, that there were a lot more stories to tell with Fray and we sort of expected a sequel. And we may still get to do a sequel.”

In “Fray : Future Slayer,” it is revealed that some time in the 21st century, an apocalyptic battle between good and battle occurs, which wipes out all demons and magicks, although it is hinted that a lone slayer may have survived.

“I guess it just worked out with what Joss wanted to do with ‘Buffy,'” Moline said. “And it does. The story is really about Buffy and her relationships and friends. Fray is a main character in it, but she is definitely second to Buffy. I think it's a Buffy story, more so than Fray story.”

The Florida-based artist continued, “We had such a good time the first go-around, I think everybody involved was certainly open for some more Fray stories. I guess there was always sort of a silent understanding that we would do more. And here we are. And it's probably the most fun I've had since the last time we were all working together.”

Moline said when the book's editor came a calling with the opportunity to return to the Buffyverse, it didn't take too long for him to sign up. “Scott Allie contacted me and said that Joss was coming back for another arc in the series and that it would be involving Fray and asked if I would be interested and I said, ‘Of course.' I didn't have anything lined up for that time, so everything just happened to fall into place.”

When Fray splashes and slashes for the first time in #16, Moline admits readers may see a slightly different take on the character than the one they last saw in 2003. A new and improved Fray, if you will.“I like to think that I have grown a lot as an artist, so she has definitely changed,” explained Moline. “I think I have sacrificed some of my original enthusiasm and maybe a little bit of heart for a lot more drawing understanding. I have definitely evolved as an artist for the better. I really feel like the world is a lot more complex this time around and I have a better grasp of who Fray is and the other characters involved. And I am having so much fun with the future stuff. It's really pretty exciting [pauses], yes, pretty exciting.”

And while Fray has come easy to Moline in this incarnation, his first attempts at Buffy have been a bit more of a struggle. “I find with doing the Buffy stuff, there are a lot of likenesses between her and Fray. At the same time, it's definitely my weak point,” offered an earnest Moline. “I am a lot more reserved on those pages because I have to be so careful. I can let go a lot more on the Fray work. It's coming from some unconscious place. But the Buffy stuff, it is more of a literal translation. It's sticking to reality more. I can really let go with the other stuff. Creatively, I don't have to stick to anything necessarily with Fray. It's coming from my imagination rather than seven years worth of actors.”

But fear not, Buffy fans, you'll know Miss Summers when you see her. Eventually. “I am on the second issue now and I am just starting to understand her face a little bit,” laughed Moline. “Hopefully by the fourth issue, people will be able to tell that it's her. I was doing okay and now, looking back on the first issue, I was missing a lot of things. So hopefully, it will keep improving to the point where she is immediately recognizable. In the first issue, I got close and it's definitely influenced by Sarah Michelle Gellar. I am trying to draw it like her but [laughs] I don't think I necessarily hit the mark, at least for the first issue.”

Moline wasn't exactly sure what he could share about plot points and specific pages but did confirm Buffy and Fray share panels. “Oh yeah, definitely,” said Moline. “I am not sure exactly what else I am allowed to say. I think I am definitely safe to say that the story occurs both in present day and in the futuristic landscape.

“There are going to be definite character evolutions that people will not expect and people will be thrilled, hopefully, by everything Joss hands them. Personally, I am thrilled getting these scripts. Just seeing the crazy stuff he comes up with is so much fun and I really think the audience is going to like this story a whole lot.”

Moline added that while Buffy regulars like Willow, Dawn, Xander and Kennedy will be along for the ride in the run, so too will some familiar faces from the “Future Slayer” like Fray's older sister Erin and her ex-boss, the mutant fish, Gunther. “There will definitely be some surprise characters, a couple of curve balls during the arc,” teased Moline.

The artist said because Joss Whedon is such a gifted storyteller and has such a mastery of pacing and dialogue, he makes a wonderful collaborator on big picture projects like the new Fray arc. “There is definitely a lot of give and take with Joss,” said Moline. “It's through a filter. I mostly communicate with the editors. Joss is real busy but he always gives great feedback. I usually present the pages at the layout stage, so if there are any storytelling corrections, we have a good chance of nipping those in the bud.

”And when pages are finalized, he definitely gets the last say before they're passed on to the inker, which is great because Joss has such a wonderful aesthetic sense, as well as being an expert storyteller. Anything he wants to share with me, I am honored to try to work it into the art because I know it's always going to be good. And that's not always the experience in the creative field. You find that sometimes you have to struggle between opinions that you are kind of shaky on, so it's refreshing to have someone that is so on target, all of the time.”

“Joss actually had a lot to do with how Fray was originally conceived,” continued Moline. “It started with a pretty good description, not of her appearance so much but her personality. I gave a round of sketches from which he picked. ‘I like this from here and this from this part.' And we sort of worked back and forth until we finally hammered out a design for Fray that he really liked. It came out of my pencil but there's definitely a lot of his vision that went into the character.”

Despite runs on popular characters like Rogue and series like “The Loners” to his credit, Moline said Fray is still by far his most asked-for sketch request by fans and collectors at conventions and shows across North America. “Fray was my first real story ; it was my first real recognition in the industry,” he said. “And the first time I got to give birth doing this for a living. She's my first baby and I am proud to have Fray as something that I am identified with. I am not crying. It's definitely a great character.

“She is a very strong-willed, self-assured, dynamically-strong and agile character. She is always flipping around and doing things with a lot of grace and power and conviction. That's a lot for an artist to draw,” explained Moline. “I have worked on some stories that were set in a very real world. And it was very bland where everyone was just walking around and talking.

“That can be good for that kind of story but I think it's a lot more fun to get to draw somebody who is doing a bicycle kick in midair and chopping somebody's head off,” laughed Moline. “It's something you don't get to do nearly enough of working in comics.

“I don't think I could ever get tired of telling stories with Fray. If they offered me a sequel [to ‘Future Slayer,'], I'd snatch it up in a second. I think there are more opportunities and who knows I may get to pop up here and there in ‘Buffy' also. We'll see. I am having a very good working relationship with Dark Horse right now. And I wouldn't be surprised to see a few more projects under their flag.”

HORROR YEARBOOK : Welcome to Horror Yearbook, Georges. You're the artist on Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 8 for Dark Horse Comics. How's that going ?

GEORGES JEANTY : It's going great ! All of the people at Dark Horse have been incredibly gracious ! This is my first gig with them and I couldn't be more pleased. My editor, Scott Allie, has been very patient while I've tried to meet certain deadlines.

HORROR YEARBOOK : Are you Canadian ? I ask because the only other “Georges” I know of is UFC Champ, Georges St. Pierre, one of my favorite fighters. He's friends with red leaf flaggers, Terrance and Philip.

GEORGES JEANTY : Ha ha, that's funny. No, not Canadian unless you count being Canadian by way of Haiti. My name is of French persuasion, but my heritage is Hispanic and my nationality is American. How's that for a melting pot ? I'm not familiar with St. Pierre, but I do know Terrance and Phillip, we're old fart buddies !

HORROR YEARBOOK : Gotta love South Park. How long have you been drawing Buffy ?

GEORGES JEANTY : I'm coming up on the two-year mark—as much as that is hard to believe ! I got the job about six months before the book was scheduled to come out. So I've been involved with Buffy for quite some time now. She is a harsh mistress, but she keeps you coming back !

HORROR YEARBOOK : How did you land the job in bringing Buffy Summers back for another season on CBTV ? (Comic Book TV – it's catchy)

GEORGES JEANTY : CBTV… yeah, I can see it now ! I think that may just start a whole new trend ! I wonder who owns the rights to the Love Boat ? I'd love to see that continue. There were so many unanswered questions form the show !

It's a long story about how I got the gig, but the short of it is I got an e-mail from Editor Scott Allie asking if I'd be interested in this book called Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I didn't admit to Scott that I had never watched an episode of Buffy but I was looking around for my next project as I was finishing the book I was on—The American Way. I took the job thinking it would be a temporary thing ; and here we are 2 years later and still about 25 issues to go ! And here I thought I feared commitment . . .

HORROR YEARBOOK : What's it like working with Joss Whedon ?

GEORGES JEANTY : Joss has been incredibly gracious—nothing like the “Superstar” status you would expect from a guy with his credits. The one thing about Joss that hit it home with me was when we were e-mailing each other back and forth and I mentioned to him that I usually like to talk to the writer after reading a script, and if I could reach him through his office or his assistant… ? Without missing a beat he said “Well here, here's my home phone and my cell—call if you need anything.”

Joss loves comics as everyone knows and he has taken to the medium quite well writing the Astonishing X-Men and Runaways, but you can tell he's been wanting to continue the adventures of the Scoobys for quite some time ! Working from his scripts has been a joy !

HORROR YEARBOOK : Are you a fan of the TV Show ?

GEORGES JEANTY : I'm a fan now, but like I said I had never watched an episode [before the comic book], well, I did see the movie and actually liked it, and I may have seen an episode with John Ritter, but that was because I was a fan of his. But now… I'm like a rabid fan ! I've got numerous statues adorning my studio and I can answer trivia with the best of them ! It's weird doing conventions with some of the actors like Juliet Landau, who I've become very friendly with, because I look at her out of the corner of my eye as a fan and I'm still a little afraid of Drucilla, which is funny because Juliet the person couldn't be nicer—and I find myself asking a lot of questions about her dad.

HORROR YEARBOOK : Who's your favorite character to draw ?

GEORGES JEANTY : This answer has shifted quite a few times. I started out really comfortable drawing Xander, and I have to say now I can draw Buffy in my sleep, but many people seem to think I handle Willow the best. I'm gonna have to stay with the girl I came to the dance with and say Buffy.

HORROR YEARBOOK : There's been some criticism to you that when you draw The Scooby Gang, you don't meet the likeness of the actors. What do you say to that ?

GEORGES JEANTY : What ?! I hadn't heard that ! I thought I was so well insulated as to not hear the criticisms… okay, now I'm depressed ! I'll be the first one to say I don't get it right all the time, but I can say with absolute honesty that I do make an effort to draw the in question. I never just fake it. As bad as some of the likenesses might look, I never skimp. So please, bear with me if a stray drawing doesn't meet up to standards.

I will say Joss said something to me early on that put me in the right frame of mind when drawing these characters, he told me he wasn't as interested in it looking like Sarah Michelle Gellar as he was in having the drawing looking like Buffy. That did it for me.

HORROR YEARBOOK : About how long does it take you to complete an issue of Buffy ?

GEORGES JEANTY : Well, isn't that the 50,000 dollar question ? In theory it shouldn't take more than a month to finish a book. In reality I struggle with that every day. I've blown my share of deadlines, but I'm constantly working so it's never dire. It only becomes dire when the assistant editor Sierra Hahn sends me an email asking where the pages are—that girl cracks a mean whip !

HORROR YEARBOOK : Is Joss gonna freak out if I don't use the entire BTVS title ?

GEORGES JEANTY : Just so long as the letters still stand for Buffy The Vampire Slayer, and not something like “Bodacious Tatas Visibly Shown”, I don't think you'll have a problem.

HORROR YEARBOOK : Is there ever a time you want to tell Joss or Drew Goddard (Cloverfield, Lost), “No, I will not redraw this scene ?” If so, which one ?

GEORGES JEANTY : Who have you been talking to… ?! In the beginning there were a few pages that I elected to redraw. Such as the double page spread I issue #3 between Willow and Amy. In that case it was so my fault. I got the characters in the wrong position and didn't realize it till I finished the page. In these cases Joss and Dark Horse have been incredibly supportive and tried to think of ways around it, and it's been me who's said y'know what, it'll be easier if I just redraw it. I haven't liked it at times but I know how important it is to fans. And years from now when all is said and done, I want Joss to be leafing through the books and feel real proud about the work we did.

HORROR YEARBOOK : What were your feelings on Buffy sleeping with another female slayer, Satsu ? Was it hard or easy for you to draw ?

GEORGES JEANTY : This was the thing that I thought was going to be the climax. I mean how do you come back from that ? And we're only in the 12th issue ! I knew how important this was going to become so I was thinking about this issue months before I was to draw it. When I did start to draw it I thought that first page of Buffy and Satsu in bed was something we were going to have to handle very delicately so there would be a lot of back and forth about what should be seen—or so I thought. I read the script from Drew, who is an absolute joy to work with, and sat down and drew out the page. I expected lots of changes when Joss, Drew and Scott saw it, but they thought it was perfect. Rarely do I hit something on the first try. I was on a high the whole day after that !

HORROR YEARBOOK : Are you a fan of horror movies ? Which ones ?

GEORGES JEANTY : I grew up with a steady diet of horror and Sci-Fi. For a while there, I didn't know there were any other types of movies. I'll admit I'm not a huge fan of gore for gore's sake, like SAW—I like my horror more intellectual. Favorites ? We could be here all day. I have to say I consider The Exorcist one of my all time favorites, but the ironic thing is I don't consider it a horror film but more of a study of three characters. The Omen (the original) is also a good one, and Rosemary's Baby. Fright Night, Nightmare on Elm Street 1, Hellraiser, Halloween (the orignal), John Carpenter's The Thing, most of Hitchcock's films, and so on . . . I just love cinema.

HORROR YEARBOOK : What comic book besides Buffy would you like to draw ?

GEORGES JEANTY:I always see this question like asking an actor what role would he like to do. Actors like to act, no matter the role, and I feel the same way. I love to draw no matter what the title. But I don't want to seem like I'm copping out on the answer. I was a Marvel fan growing up so I'll say Daredevil, or the Fantastic Four—any of the second rate characters of the ‘70s.

HORROR YEARBOOK : Any other projects in the works ? Pimp it now, bud !

GEORGES JEANTY : I wish I had more to say on this, but no. I'll be on Buffy for another couple of years, which really doesn't leave time for a whole lot else. I will be doing conventions so please, ask your readers to stop by and say hi if they get a chance. I would like to plug my web site if I may : www.kabalounge.com where all the groovy people go.

HORROR YEARBOOK : Thanks for stopping by Horror Yearbook, Georges. Any last words to all those Buffy fans out there ?

GEORGES JEANTY : If you're a Buffy fan and you've been reading the book, I don't think there is much left to say . . . only that you haven't seen anything yet !
