10 Episodes of Buffy and Angel to Sate Your Dollhouse Cravings

Faith moves on to the third basic torture group, fire, in Five By Five. Ever forget to use the bathroom because you're too damn busy thinking about how wtfawesome Dollhouse is going to be ? Well then, Captain Messy Pants, this list is for you. Avoiding the typical "top 10" Buffyverse episodes, I've included a mix of episodes that showcase Eliza Dushku's range, a couple episodes written by Joss, a few episodes written by Liz Craft and Sarah Fain (the only staff writers announced so far), and one co-written by Tim Minear (who is attached to Dollhouse but it's unknown exactly how much involvement he'll have with the show as he's developing his own project, Miracle Man).

This list is arranged in chronological order because 2-7 are best viewed that way, but watch them in whatever order you want, you rebel, you.

Bad Girls (Buffy season 3), written by Douglas Petrie. "Hey, slaying's what we were built for. If you're not enjoying it, you're doing something wrong"—Faith. Faith's influence rubs off on Buffy as they get arrested for breaking into a weapon shop, we meet Faith's new Watcher (Wesley !), Buffy electrocutes the hilariously obese Balthazar who is constantly basted in water by vampires, and Faith does the big bad by (accidentally) killing a human, which is ultimately responsible for her character's transformation.

This Year's Girl (Buffy season 4), written by Douglas Petrie. "Best thing about a coma, you wake up all rested and rejuvinated and ready for payback"—Faith. After months in a Buffy-induced coma that was filled with dreams of Buffy stabbing her (and one about cigars in a tunnel), Faith wakes up to find the Mayor dead and Sunnydale High all blown-up.

Who Are You ? (Buffy season 4), written and directed by Joss Whedon. "You have a girlfriend named Olivia, and you haven't had a job since we blew up the school, which is valid lifestyle wise—I mean it's not like you're a slacker type, but, oh, oh ! When I had psychic power I heard my mom think that you were like a stevedore during sex ... what's a stevedore ?"—Buffy (played by Eliza Dushku). The quintessential episode on this list, Buffy and Faith do the old body-switcheroo. Smartly written and brilliantly acted, if you watch just one of these episodes it should be this.

Five By Five (Angel season 1), written by Jim Kouf. "Face it Wesley, you really were a jerk. Always walking around like you had some great big stake rammed up your English Channel"—Faith. Picking up where we left off from This Year's Girl and Who Are You ?, Faith hops a bus to Los Angeles. Hired by Wolfram & Hart to kill Angel, Faith goes (more) nutso and tortures Wesley nearly to death in an effort to get Angel in the game.

Sanctuary (Angel season 1), written by Tim Minear and Joss Whedon. "All my life there was only one person who tried to be my friend, who went out of their way when I had no right or reason to expect her to and I screwed her, not to mention her boyfriend, only him, literally"—Faith. Angel takes Faith under his protection after her breakdown in the alley, and Buffy and the Wetworks Watchers have come to LA in persuit of the rogue Slayer. Lots of action and drama, this is a great Faith character development episode.

Release (Angel season 4), written by Steven S. DeKnight, Liz Craft, and Sarah Fain. "Hey, man, you're preaching to the guy who ate the choir"—Angelus. Faith and Wesley search LA for Angelus, who had his soul removed in an attempt to learn more about the Beast Master (evil Cordy). Ends in a pretty awesome fight between Faith and Angelus.

Eliza Dushku - "Dollhouse" Tv Series - The Dream Cast ?

Let's fill Eliza Dushku's "Dollhouse"

Who wants to play house — Dollhouse, that is ? The ambitious new Joss Whedon/Eliza Dushku sci-fi series is currently casting its principal characters.

Eliza plays Echo, one of the living “Dolls,” a group of men and women who can be imprinted with personality packages — from past memories to physical abilities and language skills — for different assignments. After each assignment, their memories are erased, and they all live together in a dorm/lab dubbed the Dollhouse. The show will follow Echo's burgeoning self-awareness and how it affects everyone around her.

So, let's populate the Dollhouse. The character descriptions came out earlier this week, and I say we help Joss & Co. expedite the casting process. I say we dream big, because if Bionic Woman has taught us anything, it's how bad casting can cripple a promising premise (though, to be fair, there is plenty of blame to go around there, including the entire writing staff).

Let's take a look at the new dolls (focusing on the females, cause that's just how we roll at AfterEllen.com) :

Adelle DeWitt : 40-something, any ethnicity, beautiful, sophisticated, cold as an alp. Runs the Dollhouse with an efficiency that is both ruthless and protective. Would die before she showed anyone how lonely she is. (Series regular.)

Dream Cast : Angela Bassett. Look, I know Angela turns 50 later this year, but she can pull off 40-something better than most 40-somethings. Plus, what I wouldn't give to see her be sophisticated, ruthless and protective on a regular basis, preferably in a sleeveless shirt to show off those guns.

Sierra : 20-something, Asian or any ethnicity — certainly not Caucasian. Strikingly beautiful. A Doll like Echo, she has every personality in the world but her own. Is not as self-aware as Echo, but is instinctively drawn to her as a friend. (Series regular.)

Dream Cast : Tila Tequila. I kid, I kid ! No, seriously, how about Devon Aoki ? The D.E.B.S. and Sin City star already knows how to be lethal on screen, so what's a couple more personalities thrown into the mix ?

November : In her 20s, any ethnicity, beautiful and heavy. Another Doll, a hopeful child in the house and everyone else you need her to be outside. A comforting, radiant presence, who tends to get fewer of the criminal gigs and more of the personal ones. (Recurring.)

Dream Cast : Nikki Blonsky. The Hairspray star is certainly a radiant presence. If any of the assignments require singing or dancing or romancing Zac Efron, she is all over it.

Dr. Claire Saunders : 30-60, attractive, smart and a little sad. Looks after the physical well-being of the dolls. Has an acid wit. (Recurring.)

Dream Cast : Joan Allen. My first inclination was Helen Mirren, but even I think The Queen is dreaming too big. Joan has proven herself as having all four key attributes — attractive, smart, sad and witty — time and time again. And she already has plenty of natural Bourne experience with secret agents and uncovering lost memories.

Fain, Craft Talk Dollhouse

DollhouseTV.net was fortunate enough to attend a Q&A session with Sarah Fain and Elizabeth Craft last night in their hometown of Kansas City. Most of the discussion centered around their work on Angel, The Shield, Women's Murder Club, and their young adult books - Bass Akwards & Belly Up, and the forthcoming sequel, Footfree & Fancyloose. However, we did get a chance to ask them a couple of questions about Dollhouse as well.

When asked about being there at the beginning of a show, helping to launch rather than coming after the series was well on its way (they joined Angel and The Shield during each show's fourth season), they expressed excitement about being involved in everything from casting to gathering the production crew to envisioning the sets.

“Joss [Whedon] has an amazing vision for the sets in The Dollhouse,” said Fain.

We also learned that production on the pilot episode begins April 23 in Los Angeles, and that the recent script pages released for casting earlier this week were written solely by Joss. Fain and Craft will return to work on the show Monday.

Sierra

Eliza Dushku - "Dollhouse" Tv Series is going to be an awesome show

Welcome to the ‘Dollhouse' : TV writers from KC land new gig as soon as old one ends.

Like any two people whose privilege it is to spend their days and nights writing network television shows, Elizabeth Craft and Sarah Fain were glad to be going back to work after the 14-week writers' strike ended last month.

But the life of a TV writer has its occasional twists, not unlike a one-hour drama series. And one was awaiting the Pembroke Hill graduates on the day they planned to return to “Women's Murder Club,” the show they had created for ABC.

“Apparently during the strike,” Craft said, “James Patterson and ABC came to a different understanding of what the show was supposed to be about.”

Patterson, whose best-selling crime novels Craft and Fain had adapted, wanted a change in who was running the show. But that was OK, because someone was waiting with an offer for the writing and producing partners.

“Joss e-mailed and said ‘I'm really sorry — and is it too soon to ask you to work on “Dollhouse” ' ?' ” Fain said.

Joss, as I need not explain to fans of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” or “Firefly,” is Joss Whedon, beloved creator of those two shows and the mind behind television's most anticipated new series. “Dollhouse” has a seven-episode order from Fox, will star Eliza Dushku, who used to be on “Buffy,” and will go into production in about six weeks.

“It was all very quick,” Fain said. “Monday we got fired, on Tuesday Twentieth offered us this other thing” — a different show from “Dollhouse” also being developed by the TV division of Fox, the pair's actual employer — “and then Joss e-mailed on Wednesday.”

Craft added, “That was literally as we got home from cleaning out our offices. It cushioned the blow.”

This Thursday evening at the Kansas City Public Library's downtown branch, I'll hold a public Q&A with Craft and Fain, who've spent the last decade writing scripts and novels together. The library had to make a quick edit to the promotional postcard it was mailing out ; Fain and Craft still get a creators' credit for “Murder Club,” but the words “executive producers” had to go.

We'll look at clips of that show, but our retrospective will also include their previous series, “The Shield” and the “Buffy” spin-off “Angel,” also created by Whedon. Afterward the women will gladly sign copies of their young-adult novel Bass AckwardsandBelly Up, published in 2006, and also the sequel, Footfree and Fancyloose.

“Women's Murder Club” features four women — a cop, a journalist, a coroner and a prosecutor — who have friendships that go beyond their mutual professional interest in bringing bad men to justice. The show, which stars Angie Harmon and Paula Newsome, struggled for ratings last fall until the writers' strike knocked it off the air.

I thought Fain and Craft were a good match for Patterson's work. Like the fictional foursome, they were friends going back to high school and while at “The Shield” were seasoned in a specific kind of TV genre that emphasizes personality as well as procedure.

I ask them what exactly were the creative differences that led to this parting of the ways. They are sitting in Fain's car outside Whedon's office discussing how best to answer my question. They have me on speakerphone, and as I listen to them hash it out off the record, I can tell they must have a dozen conversations like this every day, as business partners and as friends.

Their answer also confirms for me that they are determined to be just a little more honest than the usual Hollywood type, as seen in the brutal dialogues of “The Shield” or the emotional exchanges of “Murder Club.”

They agree to say that Patterson wanted the show to be, in Fain's words, “more operatic,” to which Craft added, “And high concept. He made that clear throughout. We wanted it to be more about the friendship between the women.”

“We loved the show and don't regret the way we did it,” Fain said.

“And we know a lot of people on the show who we care a lot about,” Craft said. “We wish them all the best and want their show to go on and be a success,” including new showrunner Robert Nathan, who the women agree is a great guy.

So, on to “Dollhouse.” From what I gather reading the trades, it's one part lone-rebel character drama, one part “Fantasy Island.” The “dollhouse” is a place where people can live out their fantasies — with the proviso that their memories are wiped clean afterward. Except that Dushku's character starts to remember her dollhouse experiences ... and that's about as much as I could make of it.

If the women know more than that, they aren't telling.

“ ‘Dollhouse' is going to be an awesome show,” Craft said, “but it's a hard show to sum up in one sentence.”

“It will be intelligent and intricate and have amazing characters,” Fain said. “It's a show about what it means to be human.”

“How screwed up we are and how divine we are ...” Craft said.

“And everything in between,” added her partner in crime. “It's really great, because as a writer you can create a whole new world with every episode.”

A group of people, known as "Actives" (or "Dolls"), have had their personalities wiped clean so they can be imprinted with any number of new personas and hired out for particular jobs, crimes, fantasies and occasional good deeds.

When not imprinted, the Actives live, childlike and unremembering, in a hidden facility nicknamed "The Dollhouse".

Although the Actives are ostensibly volunteers, the operation is highly illegal, and under constant threat from a determined federal agent on one end and an insane rogue Active on the other.

The story hinges around a greater and more subtle threat : Echo, a female Active, begins, in her mind-wiped state, to become self-aware.

And since a top-secret list of the show's principal characters just landed on my desk, the dynamic duo have us to help them. The fortyish iceberg who runs the Dollhouse where the human Etch-a-Sketches reside
• If the part is cast from within the Buffyverse : Juliet Landau, so creepily heartbreaking as ubervamp Drusilla. They don't come any cooler, or hotter, than her.
• If the part is cast from outside the Buffyverse : Shohreh Aghdashloo. The onetime 24 Mommie Dearest is the scariest thing we've ever seen that didn't have fangs.

PAUL BALLARD
The thirtysomething G-man who is slated to become an offbeat love interest for Dushku's "impressionable" Echo
• If the part is cast from within the Buffyverse : J. August Richards, whose long run as Angel's sidekick, Gunn, only hinted at the dark side we have zero doubt he would bring to this conflicted character.

The technogeek who enjoys his job as a Doll programmer maybe a little too much • If the part is cast from within the Buffyverse : Tom Lenk, who made such an indelible impression as Andrew, the amoral, ambiguously gay member of the Trio, Buffy's dorky "archnemeses."
• If the part is cast from outside the Buffyverse : Jason Yachanin, the adorkable Troma action hero who deserves so much better than Poultrygeist : Night of the Chicken Dead. (Hey, don't judge him based on his résumé !)

The knockout Doll who is as close to a friend as Echo has

• If the part is cast from outside the Buffyverse : Well, we did describe the character as the show's resident Tracy Turnblad, so who better than that Hairspray hoofer's portrayer, Nikki Blonsky ?

DR. CLAIRE SANDERS
The beautiful older woman with whom Topher is smitten
• If the part is cast from within the Buffyverse : Angel and Firefly's Gina Torres, who is as adept at throwing a punch as she is at landing a punch line.

I knew it wouldn't take long for Sarah Fain and Liz Craft, the Pembroke Hill grads who created "Women's Murder Club" for ABC, to find new employment inside the sprawling Twentieth TV complex. Craft and Fain, who have a long-term deal with Fox, were told that James Patterson and ABC were done with them on Monday. On Tuesday Fox offered them a project. On Wednesday Joss Whedon called.
