Marvel's SUPER HERO SQUAD Brings the Funny for All Ages

There's a moment where MODOK is cooking Falcon's goose with his thought beams. The hero also known as Sam Wilson cries out to his avian companion for help, and the faithful bird comes sweeping down from the heavens to...

...drop the largest load of droppings on MODOK's head one could possibly do without having the censors follow Redwing like a pack of murderous Sentinels.

The thing is, if this scene doesn't leave kids—and their parents—howling with laughter, they should have their senses of humor overhauled.

Welcome to the world of Marvel's latest entry in the animation field, “Super Hero Squad.” It's a combination of high torque action and, quite frankly, potty humor, that comes across like a mutant hybrid of the old “X-Men : The Animated Series” series and “Ren & Stimpy.” Better yet, make it the out-of-wedlock child of “The Avengers” and “Invader Zim.”

It's one truly bizarre critter, yet it sure knows how to move.

The series made its official debut this Saturday, September 19th, on Cartoon Network at 8:30 a.m. eastern. CN thinks so much of it they've been pulling ‘sneak peaks' over the previous few days and apparently are getting remarkably positive results.

Then again, it should. It posits Dr. Doom was out to grab the Infinity Sword. He would have gotten it, too, if it wasn't for a last-minute effort by Iron Man. Now the sword has been broken into itty bitty pieces over Super Hero City, where Stan Lee just happens to be the Mayor. While Doom sends such minions as Mole Man, Fing Fang Foom, the Abomination and more to retrieve the sword shards, IM has rounded up the likes of Silver Surfer, the Hulk, Captain America, Wolverine and Falcon to thwart the dastardly supervillain's schemes.

Yet look carefully at the artwork on this show. The visuals are all top notch, from the kid-friendly character designs to the incredible backdrops such as Super Villain City. Supervising director Mitch Schauer also has a keen eye for great camera angles and rapid fire action. Story Editor Matt Wayne's dialog is also as fast and funny as the best of the early Three Stooges routines.

So yes, this show is packed with a lot of potty humor, but that doesn't mean it's a gross out. As Marvel Animation Director of Animation Development Cort Lane points out, kids love this kind of stuff. Don't be surprised if adults make it a regular viewing habit, too

Speaking of Lane, he consented to a fast 20 minutes of his time. Here's what he had to say :

Newsarama : What are the origins of Super Hero Squad ?

Cort Lane : Its origins are complicated. To simplify it, Marvel was interested in creating a brand that crossed entertainment and all kinds of product categories that would make our characters very accessible for younger boys.

Nrama : In putting together the crew, were you looking for that ? Fans love Matt Wayne's work, but probably never thought he could do this.

Lane : We knew we wanted three things out of our series. They're really sort of big firsts for Marvel. This would be our first Marvel Universe show. So everybody involved had to know and love everything about our characters. For instance, I am a fan boy and have been since I was eleven. I have huge long boxes in my comic room at home. I also collect original art.

We also knew we this was our first action-adventure. That was a big challenge, a very interesting challenge for Marvel. We had never really done that in animation. So we brought out Mitch Schauer as our supervising director. He created “Angry Beavers,” and was a key guy on a lot of comedy shows like “Freakazoid.” Now Matt Wayne has the “Justice League Unlimited” experience. He's also done “Scooby Doo” and “Tom & Jerry Adventures.” So we put together a great comedy team.

We are also working with Film Roman. We're on the same floor, for example, as “The Simpsons.” That kind of respect and knowledge of comedy timing was very important to us.

The third is it's an all ages show. We really wanted to reach boys 4-7. That way, we can be a great entry point for them into the Marvel Universe.

Nrama : One thing I noticed is 4-7 year olds love potty jokes.

Lane : Yes.

Nrama : One scene that had me rolling on the floor is when Redwing stopped MODOK cold by dropping a load of guano on the villain's jewel.

Lane : We have a lot of fart jokes, too. You can thank Joe Quesada for the fart jokes. I think Joe's really a 4-7 year old in his heart because he really pushed for Mole Man to be gassy. I wasn't going to argue because I knew boys were going to love that.

Nrama : So how do you manage to keep it within taste ? That's a real fine line you're walking on.

Lane : We do want all our fans to know that we will still have intense action shows that they've come to know and love, both in production and in development. This is just something different and special that we had an opportunity to do.

We have a creative committee at Marvel that will pull us back from the ledge if we're going too far. Our real judgment call is it our heroes, especially our key heroes, must always be heroic. That's the best way to say it. If it undermines their heroic qualities, we won't do it. They can have funny characteristics as well, though.

That's the yardstick that we use in the script process and storyboarding. There have been times when we said ‘you know what ? That's too foolish for our character.'

Now the villains on the other hand, they don't have to be heroic. They have to be threatening. Still, MODOK comes through as a big source of comedy throughout the series, and you will see that. Mole Man is also very funny, but MODOK really has delusions of grandeur. We can play all kinds of scenarios from that.

There's an upcoming episode where Ms. Marvel is hit by a love spell and falls for MODOK. Obviously, the comedy naturally ensues just from that. The rest of the episode just runs off of that.

Nrama : Grey DeLisle really hits the hammer on the head with Ms. Marvel. It's just off the hook.

Lane : Ms. Marvel's the ultimate control freak. There are times where she's just a little bit unlikeable, but she's a really fun foil for the boys. We have all kinds of fun female characters in this series. Storm appears frequently. The Wasp appears a few times. She's played by Jennifer Morrison, who is on “House” from Day 1. She played Kirk's mother on the new “Star Trek” movie.

Nrama : Now how the heck did you pry Charlie Adler away from all his other work ? He makes a great Doom.

Lane : It's funny because Charlie has no understanding of the Marvel Universe whatsoever and is happy to admit it. He just likes doing over-the-top, fun characters. I think one of the things that's really appealing to him was he really liked the other cast members.

Nrama : You really have a sterling cast list here. You have Tom Kenny, Cree Summers, Steve Blum still being Wolverine...

Lane : But Steve does a very different take on it. He also plays Abomination. He has a lot of fun with that character. I think we have one of the greatest voice casts in the world, both in the regular cast and in the guest talent. We just recorded George Takei as Galactus and he was absolutely amazing.

Nrama : You didn't cast Fred Tatasciore as Hulk...

Lane : We cast the net really wide. There was a fine line in Hulk getting too stupid or too threatening. Travis Willingham just came in, and he mostly had anime credits, and just killed the audition.

Steve was able to take Wolverine and go a hair lighter and it worked. I don't think people don't realize Steve's versatility. He tends to play characters with that Wolverine quality, like Spike Spiegel or Roger The Negotiator, but his Abomination is really funny. He also does a lot of other great characters on the show.

Nrama : Now who did the character design ? It's almost like chibi.

Lane : We didn't want to go all the way to chibi because we wanted something unique for that show, something that could link into the other brand elements. Mitch Schauer designed those characters. He designed every one. Mitch and I are also big fans of the classic look. So the old Kirby and Buscema were things that really appealed to us. You will see a lot of that look in the costumes. There will be some flashback episodes that will be very Kirby inspired.

Nrama : You brought in Fing Fang Foom and other great Kirby monsters.

Lane : We certainly did ! We love that old Kirby stuff.

Nrama : How do you think this will work on your target 4-7 year olds ?

Lane : I think really well. Even though I am a fanboy, most of my past experience has been content for younger kids.

This wasn't a focus-testing driven show. We didn't make our decisions based on that. We did some research up front, just to gauge where we were going. That informed what we did later. We've heard really good things from networks we're working with.

Nrama : So has the show aired on other networks already ?

Lane : Just Teletoons and Cartoon Network. Cartoon Network has the official premier on September 19th. They have been sneak-peaking it. Teletoons started on the 13th.

Nrama : Because fans will ask this, Cartoon Network is where the show is airing, but you also now have the deal with Disney. Does that affect the future ?

Lane : It's safe to say it will stay on Cartoon Network for a long as they want to. It's business as usual. I don't want to discuss the details, but there's nothing to stop us continuing with them. Fans should not worry.

Nrama : So how many episodes for the first season ?

Lane : 26. We are already in pre-production on season two. I actually wanted to get on season two faster, but we're working on scripts right now.

James graduated from Davis High School and attended Juilliard, the Pacific Conservatory of the Performing Arts, and the American Conservatory Theatre. After spending ten years doing stage work he finally moved to L.A. to pursue a career in film and television. After appearing in several guest roles he finally got his big break as Spike in "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" (1997). Originally the character was suppose to be killed after a few episodes but Spike became so popular that he became a regular on the show. After the show ended he appeared as Spike in the spin-off "Angel" (1999) and in several movies. James is also a talented musician ; his band Ghost of the Robot released their first album, Mad Brilliant.

While doing regional theatre in Chicago, he co-founded the New Mercury Theatre company (named after Orson Welles's "Mercury Theatre"). In 1990, New Mercury's founders packed the operation up and relocated to Seattle in the hopes of finding more opportunity ; they played there for a number of years, using any available space, including the basements of restaurants and churches, but eventually found themselves a more permanent space near Pioneer Square.

Was recognizable in public chiefly for his platinum-blond-bleached hair. He had to bleach his hair regularly to play Spike on "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" (1997). In a famous "Entertainment Weekly" interview, he admitted to adding four to seven packets of Sweet 'n' Low to the bleaching solution, to take the sting out. When the show ended, Marsters had his bleached hair shaved on TV (to sell for charity) and reverted back to his normal brown hair.

Has a HUGE cult following in the Sci-Fi/fantasy community. There are (literally) hundreds of websites dedicated to him and his immensely popular vampire character 'Spike' on the internet.

He lived at one point (possibly still living there) in a house right on the beach. He once said during an interview that the worst part of living there was that because of his role on "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" (1997), he couldn't go out on the beach for any length of time because he'd pick up a tan.

Fronted a band called Ghost of the Robot. The band's first album, "Mad Brilliant," was released in February 2003. After just over two years together, he dissolved the group to pursue a solo performing and recording career. His first solo CD, "Civilized Man," was released during his sell-out 2005 European tour.

His appearance at the 2002 Shore Leave sci-fi convention was so popular that a great number of fans had to watch his Q&A sessions from specially set up monitors outside the conference hall. Despite the almost Beatlemania-like overcrowding at the event, he stayed on for over 2 hours after he was scheduled to leave to ensure every single fan who'd waited in line got an autograph.

Spent the first ten years of his professional acting career in the theater (at various times in New York, Chicago and Seattle).

One of his first major theater roles was a Chicago production of "The Tempest," in which he was strapped near-naked to a large wooden wheel for his entrance. He claims that he has never been self-conscious about appearing nude since.

Has long harbored a desire to direct a film adaptation of "Macbeth." He frequently cites the Shakespeare tragedy as his favorite play.

Marsters, a Shakespearean actor, triumphed over Orlando Bloom, Ewan McGregor, Jude Law, and Johnny Depp. Speaking from his Californian home, Marsters said, "I'm flattered and excited that people would think of me for the role of Romeo. Just as his character's human counterpart from "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" (1997), he is also a writer in real-life. He and comic book writer/novelist Christopher Golden teamed up in 1999 for Dark Horse Comics' "Buffy the Vampire Slayer : Spike & Dru" comic book tie-in miniseries. It is now reprinted as a graphic novel.

[on being cast as Spike in "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" (1997)] "The character was supposed to die in three to five episodes. We did three and I didn't die. We did two more and I didn't die. In the script for the fifth episode, I got conked on the head with an organ, and said, 'Well, that's it - I'm dead.' Then they sent me another script and I was back. It was a pleasant surprise that I didn't die, because I was fully expecting to. All I really wanted was a good body count and a good death, but lo and behold, I got a career." (May 2000)

[on Anthony Head] "I can't say enough about Anthony - he is one of the better actors I've ever worked with. He is the shit. He does the heavy lifting for the show with all that exposition. Every week he has to convince us that the world is going to come to an end again and again. He's got to talk about the Box of Tathor or the Talisman of Nigeria or whatever and sell it. He has to give it weight so it doesn't seem repetitious. He does that every time so well. And I knew Spike was a cool character when Anthony said so. So I had always wanted to do a scene with him." [on getting cast in "Angel" (1999)] "I danced a jig when they invited me back. I love doing Buffy and Angel ["Buffy the Vampire Slayer" (1997) and "Angel" (1999)]. You get to hit people, man. On Angel, the creators are the same guys [Joss Whedon and David Greenwalt] as on Buffy. David Boreanaz, of course, was there too. I was nervous the first day that I shot "Angel" because I had only played Spike on Buffy once in about two years ["Buffy the Vampire Slayer : Lovers Walk (#3.8)" (1998)]. In fact, I had to review tapes to find the character again. But once I got on the set, I was in full vamp makeup, fighting David again. So it really felt like old times." (1999)

[about Episode 6-19, "Seeing Red," the scene in which Spike tries to rape Buffy :] "That was the hardest day of my life. I have turned roles down because they are rapists. It's something I don't even want to watch. If I even click on it on TV, I have to click it off or I'll put my foot through the screen... What you see on that screen is just my terror at having to do that scene. There's not really any acting going on and I haven't watched the scene. I've seen little clips. You know, 'previously on Buffy the Vampire Slayer.' They show it sometimes and I'm always like, 'Oh, God.' ... The writers are fabulous, but when I showed up on set that day I told them : 'Sometimes you guys just don't know what you do. You just do not know what you're asking us...' I'm proud of it artistically, but as a human being I never, never, never want to do a scene like that again and I will always refuse because I know what it does to me." I don't know much about the internet, I'm afraid.

What I noticed was that when I go on the Internet, or used to, my head would swell. Why am I an actor ? God knows but some of it has got to be the need for acceptance and stuff, right ? So I'm just drawn to that stuff like honey and at some point I just had to say, 'James, get off the 'Net, go back, clean your toilet.' Now I find I'm like a mentor to the guys in the band because they're tasting it now too. And I'm like, 'Charlie, get off the Internet. Get off your fan site now. You're losing it.' And he's like, 'Yeah, boss, right.'

[on the difference between playing Spike in _"Buffy the Vampire Slayer" (1997)_ and playing Brainiac in "Smallville" (2001) :] One important thing is that Brainiac is always smiling. He's so good at what he does, he's enjoying himself... He's a very intelligent character. Spike was not stupid, but I don't think his hallmark quality was vast reserves of intelligence - charm, good hair, maybe, but not intelligence. And this man is very good at lying, which Spike never was. [October 15, 2005]

[on hearing of plans to bring the Spike character back for a third WB series] As long as I could do it within, say, the next four or five years. Past that, I'm too old. Spike's a vampire, man, and I've got high standards - you have to believe that the guy has not aged since we met him. About his Millennium appearance : I was really honored because I noticed that the lead, Lance, I noticed him in Alien 2, you know, and he broke my heart. In that movie, I mean, how can you break a guy's heart in the middle of all that blood ? You know, but he's really one of the best actors we have. And I went on [Millennium] and the whole crew, the show is a lot like Buffy in that it strays toward cinema. It tries to be as good as a movie, and what that means is that everyone works really hard. This is the joke name of Buffy in Hollywood : Buffy the Weekend Slayer. Because we start at 4:00 in the morning on Monday and we leave the set about 6:00 in the morning on Saturday. And with Millennium, it's just that much. The joke about Millennium was that there's two shots for every shot that they use. They shoot many more set-ups than they even cut to. And everyone was apologizing to me : 'Sorry we're not nicer, we're just kinda stressed out right now.' And, I don't know, I've never seen people work harder and be nicer about it, and I was honored to be on the set frankly.

Regarding which of his own stunts he does and does not do : I don't fall. If my feet leave the floor, that ain't me.

Where Are They Now

(July 2004) At a recent convention, announced he has been given the opportunity to do his dream - a movie version of MacBeth. Currently he's working on adapting the Bard's famous tragedy for the big screen. Sadly, there has been talk that the movie's funding had fallen through.

(November 2004) Finished filming "The Pierre Heist" (_Cool Money (2005) (TV)_) in Toronto. He played the lead, Bobby Comfort. It is a tv movie that is rumoured to air in January or February of 2005.

(March 2005) His movie Cool Money (2005) (TV) (formerly The Pierre Heist) will air in March 2005.

(July 2005) Will be guest starring on the upcoming series 5 of The WB's Smallville

(June 2007) Filming for Torchwood season 2 in Cardiff and doing a concert at The Point 21/7. Also, appears in an episode of TNT's new series Saving Grace.

Exclusive : 'Caprica' snags James Marsters !

Caprica exec producer Jane Espenson is using her powers as a charter member of the Whedonverse for good. Sources confirm to me exclusively that Buffy all-star James Marsters is joining the Battlestar Galactica prequel for a sizable arc.

Marsters will play a dangerous terrorist leader by the name of Barnabus Greeley in a minimum of three episodes. Driven by desires both moralistic and carnal, Barnabus is as lethal as he is unpredictable.

And no ones does lethal and unpredictable better than Marsters.

Caprica is set to make its Syfy debut on Jan. 22, 2009.

James Marsters - "She Stoops to Conquer" Play - He will play Charles Marlow

James is to play 'Charles Marlow' in the classic She Stoops to Conquer live onstage as part of the L.A. Theatre Works 2009-2010 season of play readings. She Stoops to Conquer will be presented the week of June 14, 2010 and broadcast at a later date on National Public Radio.

Himber Entertainment is planning a very special event for the weekend of June 19th/20th that will include tickets to the Saturday matinee performance and more for a group of 75. Full details will be released at a later time and we advise those who wish to attend not to finalize travel arrangements for the weekend until timings are announced nearer the date.
