Danny Strong - "Butler" Movie - He will write the script for Columbia

Danny Strong has been tapped to serve as the writer for "The Butler," Columbia's story of Eugene Allen, a black man who served as a White House butler for 34 years.

Laura Ziskin is producing the pic, which is based on Wil Haygood's Washington Post "A Butler Well Served by This Election."

Allen started at the White House as a "pantry man" in 1952 when blacks weren't allowed to use public restrooms in his native Virginia. He ended up serving eight presidents and had a unique front row seat as political and racial history was being made, from the Vietnam War and the civil rights movement to the assassinations of Martin Luther King Jr. , President John F. Kennedy and Robert Kennedy Jr.

The story was published Nov. 7, just days before the historic election of Barack Obama. Allen and his wife of 65 years talked and marveled at the idea that a black man could be president. But on Election Day, Allen cast his vote alone ; his wife died the day before.

Haygood will act as an associate producer on the film. Matt Tolmach and Rachel O'Connor are overseeing for the studio.

Strong was an actor who's best known for a recurring role on "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" before writing "Recount," HBO's look at the 2000 presidential election. The telepic earned him a WGA Award as well as an Emmy nomination. The movie went on to garner 11 Emmy nominations (with three wins), as well as SAG, PGA and DGA nominations.

He is currently writing "The Crusaders" for Universal. Gary Ross is attached to direct and produce, while Tobey Maguire is attached to star in the story about the landmark 1954 Brown v. Board of Education case.

RECOUNT is still the most engaging script I've ever read. Danny Strong's research and talent paid off in his telling of a story every viewer already knew the outcome of. And yet, in the telling of that story, Strong made you believe the Democrats might win. That it was actually possible. And, for a time, it was.

I had the pleasure of reading Danny's script long before it was made into a film. And I can tell you right now that everything that made it a great film was right there on the page. And more. Tonight Danny didn't win the Emmy for best writer (it went to Kirk Ellis for JOHN ADAMS), but I want to honor him here and now for telling a story that needed to be told at a time when we need to be reminded. And for doing such a damn good job of it. And congratulations to HBO, director Jay Roach, producer Paula Weinstein and all the other talents attached to this project who recognized both its importance and the power of the script that continues to be the film's backbone.

I look forward to more scripts and more films from Danny Strong. The Academy may not have given him an Emmy, but no one can take away what he has given us.

Danny Strong interviews celebrities for the 2008 Democratic Convention

Celebrities are getting serious at the Democratic convention.

Sure, there are parties aplenty. But a contingent of Hollywood types under the Creative Coalition banner are gathering for sober-minded luncheons and forums to discuss issues facing the Democratic Party and the country.

At one such event, Danny Strong, an actor and screenwriter who is keeping a video diary of the DNC for The Associated Press, spoke with actress Anne Hathaway about what brought her to Denver.

AP : What issues are you most passionate about ?

Hathaway : “That's a good question, and it should be a simple one. But right now I feel like there's so many aspects of our great nation which could use a little bit of help, or a lotta bit of help, that it's hard to pick just one. I think the most important thing is the economy. We need to figure out the housing crisis. We need to build up our middle class again. Right now, the disparity between the uber-rich and the uber-poor, it's worrying and it's not getting better. We need to focus on a way to just get our economy back, to get it back on track.

“Obviously the war is a very important issue to me. We need to get our troops home, and we need to get them home now. My own personal feelings about it is when the world is kind of perfect, and we have those two things — when we're at peace and everybody has a good job — although we should be working on these at the same time, I don't mean to imply otherwise, I'm really a big advocate for health care and of course my heart lies with education.”

AP : What inspires you about Obama ?

“I was kind of afraid of Obama the first time I saw him. I thought, I've been burned by guys like you before. I've been burned by politicians before that I wanted to believe in and just didn't live up to it. And I was afraid to trust him and I was afraid to have hope when I first kind of became aware of him. It was around the time that he gave his speech on race that I just said ‘I can't deny how I feel about you, Barack Obama. I want you to be the president. I want you in the White House.'

“I think that not only can Barack cause change — because that's where his heart lies — as a true American success story, he understands how hard it is. And when he says that he will, when people come to him with problems, he's been there. I just heard the other day, he just paid off his student loans two years ago. And so when people talk about financial issues and the higher cost of education, he really gets it. So not only do I think he has the power, the temperment and the tremendous character that can cause change in the government, I think he's the sort of person that inspires us all to be our best selves.

“He inspires us to be the best Americans we can be. And I think if he's president — when he's president, I should say — we're going to find people changing on the inside. And once we all have hope for the future, I think you're going to find everyone's going to wake up and take control of this amazing moment where there's so many things that need help, and people will all be inspired to help.”

AP : Do you think that the entertainment industry has a positive or negative effect on politics ?

“I think the entertainment industry has all good intentions when we try to come out. The thing that is unfortunate is that some of us who are maybe a little recognizable, we've got to come out as private citizens and support our country in any way that we can.”

“There's a media spin on it that we're all out of touch. How could we possibly have an awareness of what real Americans feel and think and need because we just ride around in limos and — I don't know — buy diamonds all day long ? That's kind of the perception. But I don't know anyone like that. I'm certainly not like that. I'm a passionate American, and that's what I am first and foremost.”

Tobey Maguire to star in 'Crusaders' - Ross will direct film for Universal

Tobey Maguire is attached to Universal's "The Crusaders," a drama about the landmark 1954 Brown v. Board of Education case.

Gary Ross is attached to direct, and U has hired "Recount" scribe Danny Strong to write the script.

Maguire would play Jack Greenberg, who, as an idealistic lawyer fresh out of law school, joined with NAACP Legal Defense Fund head and future Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall to win a Supreme Court case that ruled segregation in American schools illegal.

Bob Cooper is producing, and Ross and Maguire will be exec producers through Ross's U-based Larger Than Life Prods.

Ross and Maguire teamed on "Pleasantville" and "Seabiscuit."

Strong, a former assistant to Ross, received an Emmy nomination last week for scripting the Jay Roach-directed HBO film "Recount."

"Recount" was Strong's first scripting credit, but he has a long list of them as an actor. Aside from a recurring roles on "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," he also played small roles in "Pleasantville" and "Seabiscuit."

The project, based on Greenberg's memoirs "Crusaders in the Courts," was originally developed by Cooper at New Line. That studio let it go after New Line was absorbed by Warner Bros.Ross will next direct Universal drama "The Free State of Jones," about rebellion in Mississippi during the Civil War and Reconstruction.

Entering College is a time of great transition, but Sydney White (Amanda Bynes) is secure in her plan to follow in her late-mother's footsteps and pledge Kappa Phi Nu sorority when she arrives at Southern Atlantic University.

Raised by a plumber father and a host of other construction workers, the comic book collection toting Sydney is definitely her own unique person and has some decidedly tomboy tendencies that contrast starkly with the ditzy, superficial girls she meets at her first sorority function.

Sorority leader and student council president Rachel (Sara Paxton) takes an instant dislike to Sydney and vows to make her rushing experience intolerable.

Only Tyler (Mat Long), a member of one of the campus fraternities, seems to see and appreciate the real Sydney.

After weeks of hazing abuse, Rachel declares Sydney unfit to join the sorority and a despondent Sydney joins seven misfit boys in a soon-to-be-condemned house on Greek Row known as the Vortex.

Fueled by the desire for revenge and a newly discovered sense of respect and belonging thanks to her new roommates, Sydney decides to fight back against the snobbery of the Greek elite and champion the rights of all misfits on campus by running against Rachel for Student Council President.

By rallying the support of interest groups and misfits campus-wide, it appears that Sydney might just have a chance of winning.

This film begins with an almost gag-inducing portrayal of sorority snobbery at its worst and soon gives way to a hysterically comic look at the under-representation of the masses in collegiate society.

The satirical parallel to Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is heavy (this is the story of "Sydney White and the Seven Dorks" complete with Sneezy, Sleepy, and Doc) and the portrayal of interest groups on college campuses is farcical to the extreme.

All in all, Sydney White is hysterically funny and surprisingly appealing to audiences of both genders and a wide age range.

Rated PG-13 for some language, sexual humor, and partying.
