Danny Strong - "Butler" Movie - He will write the script for Columbia

Danny Strong has been tapped to serve as the writer for "The Butler," Columbia's story of Eugene Allen, a black man who served as a White House butler for 34 years.

Laura Ziskin is producing the pic, which is based on Wil Haygood's Washington Post "A Butler Well Served by This Election."

Allen started at the White House as a "pantry man" in 1952 when blacks weren't allowed to use public restrooms in his native Virginia. He ended up serving eight presidents and had a unique front row seat as political and racial history was being made, from the Vietnam War and the civil rights movement to the assassinations of Martin Luther King Jr. , President John F. Kennedy and Robert Kennedy Jr.

The story was published Nov. 7, just days before the historic election of Barack Obama. Allen and his wife of 65 years talked and marveled at the idea that a black man could be president. But on Election Day, Allen cast his vote alone ; his wife died the day before.

Haygood will act as an associate producer on the film. Matt Tolmach and Rachel O'Connor are overseeing for the studio.

Strong was an actor who's best known for a recurring role on "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" before writing "Recount," HBO's look at the 2000 presidential election. The telepic earned him a WGA Award as well as an Emmy nomination. The movie went on to garner 11 Emmy nominations (with three wins), as well as SAG, PGA and DGA nominations.

He is currently writing "The Crusaders" for Universal. Gary Ross is attached to direct and produce, while Tobey Maguire is attached to star in the story about the landmark 1954 Brown v. Board of Education case.

RECOUNT is still the most engaging script I've ever read. Danny Strong's research and talent paid off in his telling of a story every viewer already knew the outcome of. And yet, in the telling of that story, Strong made you believe the Democrats might win. That it was actually possible. And, for a time, it was.

I had the pleasure of reading Danny's script long before it was made into a film. And I can tell you right now that everything that made it a great film was right there on the page. And more. Tonight Danny didn't win the Emmy for best writer (it went to Kirk Ellis for JOHN ADAMS), but I want to honor him here and now for telling a story that needed to be told at a time when we need to be reminded. And for doing such a damn good job of it. And congratulations to HBO, director Jay Roach, producer Paula Weinstein and all the other talents attached to this project who recognized both its importance and the power of the script that continues to be the film's backbone.

I look forward to more scripts and more films from Danny Strong. The Academy may not have given him an Emmy, but no one can take away what he has given us.

Tobey Maguire to star in 'Crusaders' - Ross will direct film for Universal

Tobey Maguire is attached to Universal's "The Crusaders," a drama about the landmark 1954 Brown v. Board of Education case.

Gary Ross is attached to direct, and U has hired "Recount" scribe Danny Strong to write the script.

Maguire would play Jack Greenberg, who, as an idealistic lawyer fresh out of law school, joined with NAACP Legal Defense Fund head and future Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall to win a Supreme Court case that ruled segregation in American schools illegal.

Bob Cooper is producing, and Ross and Maguire will be exec producers through Ross's U-based Larger Than Life Prods.

Ross and Maguire teamed on "Pleasantville" and "Seabiscuit."

Strong, a former assistant to Ross, received an Emmy nomination last week for scripting the Jay Roach-directed HBO film "Recount."

"Recount" was Strong's first scripting credit, but he has a long list of them as an actor. Aside from a recurring roles on "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," he also played small roles in "Pleasantville" and "Seabiscuit."

The project, based on Greenberg's memoirs "Crusaders in the Courts," was originally developed by Cooper at New Line. That studio let it go after New Line was absorbed by Warner Bros.Ross will next direct Universal drama "The Free State of Jones," about rebellion in Mississippi during the Civil War and Reconstruction.

Entering College is a time of great transition, but Sydney White (Amanda Bynes) is secure in her plan to follow in her late-mother's footsteps and pledge Kappa Phi Nu sorority when she arrives at Southern Atlantic University.

Raised by a plumber father and a host of other construction workers, the comic book collection toting Sydney is definitely her own unique person and has some decidedly tomboy tendencies that contrast starkly with the ditzy, superficial girls she meets at her first sorority function.

Sorority leader and student council president Rachel (Sara Paxton) takes an instant dislike to Sydney and vows to make her rushing experience intolerable.

Only Tyler (Mat Long), a member of one of the campus fraternities, seems to see and appreciate the real Sydney.

After weeks of hazing abuse, Rachel declares Sydney unfit to join the sorority and a despondent Sydney joins seven misfit boys in a soon-to-be-condemned house on Greek Row known as the Vortex.

Fueled by the desire for revenge and a newly discovered sense of respect and belonging thanks to her new roommates, Sydney decides to fight back against the snobbery of the Greek elite and champion the rights of all misfits on campus by running against Rachel for Student Council President.

By rallying the support of interest groups and misfits campus-wide, it appears that Sydney might just have a chance of winning.

This film begins with an almost gag-inducing portrayal of sorority snobbery at its worst and soon gives way to a hysterically comic look at the under-representation of the masses in collegiate society.

The satirical parallel to Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is heavy (this is the story of "Sydney White and the Seven Dorks" complete with Sneezy, Sleepy, and Doc) and the portrayal of interest groups on college campuses is farcical to the extreme.

All in all, Sydney White is hysterically funny and surprisingly appealing to audiences of both genders and a wide age range.

Rated PG-13 for some language, sexual humor, and partying.

Lots of political ink on Black List

Political films may be tanking at the boxoffice, but execs continue to salivate over the genre, according to a ranking of hot scripts making the rounds at Hollywood agencies.

On Friday, the annual Black List, compiled by production exec Franklin Leonard, was released, with a notable trend : Political films are still big.

The top two scripts on the list, and five of the top six scripts, are political in nature. Danny Strong's HBO Films election drama "Recount" came in at No. 1, and Beau Willimon's political thriller about a politician's communication director "Farragut North," which has been plucked by Warner Bros., finished at No. 2.

The Black List polls about 150 development execs and other officials for their favorite scripts that won't be produced and released in the next year, then ranks them according to the greatest number of mentions. "Recount" turned up on an the lists of an overwhelming 44 execs.

One part popularity contest and one part tip sheet, the Black List has in its three years of existence become an essential tool for determining the state of the script business.

It also provides a kind of zeitgeist barometer, indicating what types of projects and scribes are currently in vogue. This year's list suggests that political themes continue to offer extensive fodder for drama even as the potential for boxoffice remains limited. The sixth-most-popular script was the most topical of all ; occupying the slot was Steve Knight's "Curveball," a Focus Features project about false intelligence information in Iraq.

More than 40 scripts on this year's list were cited by at least five development execs, and more than 100 got at least two mentions, the minimum required for a spot on the Black List. It's impossible to lobby for a spot on the list, but agents and studios wait with bated breath to see if their clients or scripts make the cut.

And the list tends either to predict or reinforce success. This year, Leonard cited current releases "Juno" and "Lars and the Real Girl" as previous top-five finishers.

Many of the highest-ranked scripts on the list, including "Recount," Farragut" and the IRA drama "Infiltrator" by Josh Zetumer," which has been bought by Warner Bros., have been snapped up.

But several popular scripts remain available. The third-most-liked script is a sci-fi tale called "Passengers" from Jon Spaihts which, according to its logline, involves a passenger on a spaceship who is awakened from a cryogenic slumber. Keanu Reeves in on board to produce.

The fifth-most-popular script also is available ; the project, titled "Selma" and penned by Paul Webb, is a historical drama about Martin Luther King Jr., Lyndon B. Johnson and the civil rights movement.

Other available scripts to make the top 10 are the youth-oriented comedy "I want to F--- Your Sister" from Melissa Stack, about a cad who tried to protect his sister form other cads ; and Nat Faxon & Jim Rash's coming-of-age tale "The Way Back."

Of course, with the strike still raging, it's unlikely writers will be peddling these scripts anytime soon (the introduction to the Black List endorses the writers' cause). But the strike won't stop the list from being passed around — and gloated about.

"You can live without having a client on it, but once you do, it immediately becomes part of your pitch," one agent said.
