Exclusive : Thomas Dekker Says TERMINATOR : THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES may be back

Thomas Dekker was our first. On-set interview that is.

Which is why — aside from starring in one of the most criminally under-appreciated television shows in recent memory — we'll always have a soft spot for the TERMINATOR : THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES star.

And, why this TV Addict took it upon himself to brave the horde of 50,000 strong that converged upon Toronto's Annual FanExpo over the weekend to provide fans of the show with some much needed closure. And, as luck would have it, a little hope — courtesy of the always classy and candid Dekker (Who was on hand to promote the slasher flick Laid to Rest) and was more than happy to take a few minutes to reflect upon his now infamous YouTube video, the one thing he would have changed about the series and of course, what was in store for Connor and Co. had the proverbial powers that be not put the kibosh on a third season of Sarah Connor's Chronicles.

The TV Addict : How do you feel about being here in Toronto right now instead of the Warner Bros. lot shooting season three of the show ?

Thomas Dekker : I definitely miss the show a lot. In fact, it sort of catches me off guard how much I miss the show sometimes. I really miss the people I got to work with everyday and the environment of knowing where you were working on a daily basis. And of course, the story. I loved the story and I knew where the third season was going and I thought it was just so cool. I love that Josh [Executive Producer Josh Friedman] had the balls to make everybody kind of wait, and be patient. Unfortunately I guess people really weren't that willing to be patient.

Since you brought it up, just how cool was season three going to be ?

I've divulged too much in the past [so I have to be careful as to not piss off Josh] but I mean it was going to be really interesting because there were questions in the future like is Sarah Connor at the age she would be in the future or is she already dead ? I know which one that is, and it was the more interesting of the two to me. Plus what is she doing in the past ? Also my sort of relationship with Allison and finding Cameron would play a large part in the season, do I go with the robot I know or do I go with the human that doesn't know me ? The fact that Danny Dyson became a very important part of it was also very exciting because it harkened back directly to the second film.

Has there been any talk of continuing the story in a different form, a comic book perhaps ?

They've spoken about doing a TV movie. Well, not a TV movie, but kind of like a direct-to-DVD movie [Think : BATTLESTAR GALACTICA's THE PLAN]. Obviously it's difficult because the show is based on a movie and they just had one come out, so it's kind of hard to make a movie with our show because everyone has kind of forgotten about us. But they're hoping, at least when I spoke to [Producer] James Middleton that's where they are with it.

When did you find out that TERMINATOR had been officially terminated ?

Obviously we'd seen the ratings and we had an inkling about it. But it was tricky, because the show was so popular overseas. In the end, it really came down to DOLLHOUSE or us and that was sort of what happened. I think we were too expensive and DOLLHOUSE was a lot cheaper.

So pretty much your salary cost us another season ?!

[Laughs] It wasn't my salary let me tell you that much ! But I think that it ultimately did come down to money.

Where were you when you found out ?

I ultimately found out while I was shooting Nightmare on Elm Street, I got a text from Josh that was typically Josh, “Show's cancelled. Call me.” And that was that.

What inspired you to take to the internet and post a video on YouTube video (see above) ?

I was in Chicago doing the movie and we were shooting nightshifts. Having just woken up, I was surfing the net just to see how people were reacting to the show and I found myself really touched by videos, blogs and all these things that random people of all ages and groups had done to try and save the show. It was nice to get the affirmation that people wanted more of something we worked so hard on. So I just kind of thought it would be funny of me to ask FOX to give me my job for another year. I really just wanted to make something to let them [the fans] know that we knew they were trying and we appreciated it and appreciate them. The best part was that a lot of people though that I was drunk, stoned or f*cked up. Which tends to happen a lot of my stuff. I can assure you, I have many moments of non-sobriety but that wasn't one of them. It's actually really funny that I sort of come off as a crack head even though I'm not.

Looking back, to you have a favourite episode ?

I'd say the bit that really just summed up the whole show to me was the ending montage of “Adam Raised a Cain,” where it's the song that little Savannah Weaver was singing with John Henry, and they're burying Derek and Sarah's been arrested. i just think that that is a testament to the beauty of the show. It was a piece that was so poetic to me and one that you don't normally see in a sci fi television vehicle. Moments like that made me very proud. And obviously I loved our last episode ‘Born to Run.”

Is there anything, be it a performance or an episode, that you would love the ability to travel back in time and change ?

I wish I wasn't so fat by the end of the season. But other than that, no. You know, I think all of us are pretty satisfied and proud. Even the episode that got kind of dissed or whatever, like the 20's episode [Self Made Man], which was more experimental — I liked and thought it was high concept sci fi.

Garret Dillahunt is on what seems to be 15 different shows this fall, Summer [Glau] has jumped to Joss Whedon's DOLLHOUSE, what's next for you ?

I'm doing movies right now, which is nothing against TV, but I've done a lot of TV and I'm really trying to branch out and I'm having a really good time with that. I did an indie called All About Evil, then Nightmare on Elm Street and next up is another indie that I start in two weeks but can't disclose what it is yet. But it's with a filmmaker that I've wanted to work with for my entire life, so I'm really excited. So yeah, I'm getting to do all this stuff, but it's not the family like TERMINATOR. I miss the family.

As a star of "Terminator : The Sarah Connor Chronicles" and a veteran of Joss Whedon's "Firefly" and "Serenity," Summer Glau is accustomed to being recognized in public by enthusiastic and devoted fanboys.

On March 9, art will imitate life (or real life will intersect with art) when Glau crosses network boundaries to guest star as herself on CBS' "Big Bang Theory."

In the episode, airing on March 9, the brilliantly geeky heroes of "Big Bang Theory" run into Summer Glau on a train and, as one might imagine, they're pretty excited about the chance for celebrity interaction.

Meeting with reporters before the "Terminator : The Sarah Connor Chronicles" panel at San Francisco's WonderCon, HitFix asked Glau about her foray into sitcom work and how Fictional Summer Glau differs from Real Life Summer Glau.

"They're very different," Glau laughed. "I think that I was playing myself, but I was trying to be funny, they tried to make me funny. I was nervous, because it's supposed to be about how I respond to people who know my work as Cameron, so I was concerned about how people might perceive that. But I was honored to work with such talented actors."

A FOX star going on CBS to effectively plug her role on said FOX show seems a little unusual, but both "Big Bang Theory" and "Terminator : The Sarah Connor Chronicles" are Warner Brothers TV productions (and CBS probably wouldn't figure "T:SCC" is much of a threat to its Friday supremacy).

"Bill Prady and I are friends," added "Terminator : The Sarah Connor Chronicles" creator Josh Friedman. "He'd done a couple little shout-outs over the last season, done one or two things. When I talked to him, he said, 'Do you think Summer would want to play Summer ?' The script was really funny and the idea was really funny. I was at the read-through and I wanted to go when they were actually shooting, but I thought it would be a little weird. I didn't want to be like the protective parent, the stage dad or something."

Although Glau's spot-on dead-pan delivery has generated comedy on her previous TV work, this was a different kind of experience.

"When you do drama, you try different things — Not my ['Terminator'] character, because I play a robot — you come in... and something might happen on one take that you didn't expect and you just go with it and the scene flows with it," she noted. "When you do comedy, it's so precise. Every word can change whether it's funny or not. I didn't realize that. I had no idea. Every word that I would say, sometimes they would say, 'Say it going up. Say it going down. Say it fast. Say it slow.' That's how specific it was."

After reading the script, Friedman wasn't worried about how the show would depict Glau and reflect on how she actually is.

"It was very respectful, I think of Summer, of her words," he said. "Those characters make fun of each other all the time... She doesn't want to be seen as someone who if you were a fan and came up to to Summer on a train and asked her a question, that she would mock you. That's not Summer. She's would never do that."

Glau quickly added, "Yeah. I would never do that. So I was nervous, I was like 'It feels like I'm being mean.'"

So will the "Big Bang Theory" actually encourage people to come up to Glau whenever they see her in public ?

"Parts of it. I think things go wrong," Glau said with a smile. "It starts out like it might be good and then things come apart. I hope it will be funny. I enjoyed it a lot."

Glau's "Big Bang Theory" episode airs on Monday, March 9.

Does Summer Glau's Terminator feel love ? Will Terminator season two end with a cliffhanger ? Is Glau sick of playing strong women ? Glau and producer Josh Friedman answered these burning questions on a conference call. Spoilers...

Does Cameron really love John ?

One of the most jarring moments in the show was during the season premiere, where Glau's Terminator, Cameron, said she loves John Connor. Was she just trying to avoid being killed ? Or did she mean it, sort of ?

Glau surprised me, by saying that "Cameron's deep love for John is because he is her whole reason for existing... I think that is love, and I think she would do anything for him, and in her reality, I think that's what love is for her." She added that she's not sure where Friedman is going with the character, but she always plays it as if she does feel something for John.

The move to Friday nights, and the show's future :

"We were getting our asses kicked on Monday nights," Friedman says. Friday nights have different expectations, ratings-wise, plus it gives Fox an opportunity to promote Terminator and Dollhouse together, creating a science-fiction block that might appeal to the same audience.

Friedman remains optimistic about the show getting a third season, but also addressed the possibility that it might not happen. He says he wrote the season finale "the way I was planning on writing the finale for a long time... You owe the audience a logical conclusion to the things we have been building towards." It's true that fans get upset when a show has an open-ended conclusion and doesn't come back, but "fans also get upset if we write a crappy finale. If I tried to sum up every single thing in 43 minutes, it would be a disaster. It would end up like a clip show."

He also reiterated that the rest of the season is more serialized, with fewer standalone episodes, than the first half was.

Shocking things in the season finale :

Glau says she just read the script for the season finale and she was "shocked." Not to mention excited and "a little sad." It sounds as though something tragic and/or sad happens to Cameron this season. "I think everybody's going to be shocked at what happens at the end of this season." And Cameron has some great scenes in that episode.

Also, she has lots and lots of gun battles and smackdowns in the last nine episodes, way more than in the first half of the season. "People are going to be on a roller-coaster" in the final episodes.

The awesomeness of Summer Glau :

Friedman says he saw Summer audition several years ago, and really wanted to cast her in something. But instead, she went off to do the Serenity movie and The 4400. Friedman carried her audition tape around with him for a few weeks afterwards. And when the time came to do the Terminator show, he wrote the part of Cameron for her. "She's one of those few people who can be completely still, and still hard to take your eyes off."

Glau says that playing a robot is more challenging in some ways than playing a regular human, because she has to plan out everything in advance. She can't just react naturally or convey normal emotions.

In the pilot episode, Friedman says, he and producer James Middleton saw Glau do something incredibly clever during one take. They weren't sure if she was doing it on purpose, but then during the next take, she did it again. That was when Friedman realized how awesome Glau was going to be at playing this character, and how little hand-holding she was going to need.

Also, that scene in a recent episode where Cameron says she feels, because she wouldn't be much good if she didn't ? That's part of Cameron's scheme. "I think she has a plan for drawing John closer to her, and so I've been trying to incorporate that all season," says Glau.

Also, someone asked Glau, "Do you ever get tired of playing deceptively strong asskickers ?" And this was her whole answer : "No." Then she was pressed to elaborate, and she said something about how she enjoys playing complicated characters. But also, Cameron has gotten to be the damsel in distress on some occasions, and she's gotten to be sort of a princess and do ballet.

Other stuff :

Friedman says he'd like to be able to revisit the "Alison from Palmdale" character at some point — the future human whose appearance, and apparently memories, Cameron borrowed from.

Another character who might be revisited at some point : the engineer who built the time machine in the bank vault in 1963, which we saw in the show's pilot episode. The writers regularly debate whether to bring that engineer character back. Some writers pitch Friedman stories about that characters, but others never want to see him on the show. Friedman is obsessed with "the engineer" and definitely would like to bring him onto the show sometime — but not in the second season.

Cameron has "very few advantages" in a straight-up brawl with Shirley Manson's Catherine Weaver. It would be like a replay of the fight in Terminator 2.

This Monday at 8 pm/ET, Fox's Terminator : The Sarah Connor Chronicles presents a midseason finale which reveals one character's shocking secret, sets the stage for other surprises, and ultimately leaves Sarah herself in perhaps one of the last situations you'd imagine to find her in. Summer Glau shares a peek at the episode, shedding light on Cameron's "issues" with John's girlfriend and teasing insight into one of the series' biggest mysteries of all. (After this week, Sarah Connor returns Friday, Feb. 13, leading into the debut of Joss Whedon's Dollhouse.)

TVGuide.com : Cameron isn't liking John's girlfriend Riley (played by Leven Rambin) too much these days, is she ?

Summer Glau : No, and I think it's more than her just being worried that Riley's a threat. She doesn't like having her place taken over by somebody else.

TVGuide.com : And what do you mean by "her place" ?

Glau : Well, Cameron only exists to take care of John and be with him at all times, and he keeps trying to spend time alone with Riley. That leaves Cameron feeling like she doesn't have a purpose. So it's really uncomfortable for her — if it's possible for a robot to feel uncomfortable.

TVGuide.com : And this week, Riley tells Cameron a lie which only exacerbates the suspicion.

Glau : Yeah.... I believe that Cameron doesn't really know what's really going on with Riley, but she's definitely on to her.

TVGuide.com : There's a big reveal about Riley coming. Did you know it was coming before they introduced that character ?

Glau : I knew partly what was going to happen, but I certainly didn't expect it to go as far as it has. Things have gotten even more complicated. I think the storyline is great.

TVGuide.com : Do you enjoy playing the pseudo-jealousy thing between Cameron, John and Riley ?

Glau : I love it. It adds so much dimension to Cameron, and it's fun to figure out how far to take it. You don't want to take it too far, but I do want to insinuate that it's there.

TVGuide.com : I enjoyed the scenes a few weeks ago between Cameron and Eric (The Black Donnellys' Billy Lush), the librarian guy.

Glau : That was a really interesting episode because Cameron doesn't usually say much, and as far as doing meaty scenes as an actor, it's fun to just sit down and talk. That's one thing that Cameron really got to do in that episode. I enjoyed Billy as an actor, he's really, really gifted.

TVGuide.com : I saw that story as almost an "escape" for Cameron, a secret place she could go to and be "regular."

Glau : Yeah, it was very creative. Toni [Graphia] always writes really good stuff for me.

TVGuide.com : Do you hope to someday get a fight scene with Shirley Manson's T-1001 ?

Glau : Yes ! Shirley hasn't done many down-and-dirty fights yet — she usually takes people out pretty easily — so I wonder how it's going to go. [Laughs]

TVGuide.com : One burning question fans have concerns what happened to Derek in the future, in "the basement." Do you have any insight into what went down ?

Glau : I do. Later on, maybe this season, it will be revealed what really went down.... Remember - Cameron knows Derek, and Derek knows Cameron, so that's also going to be fun to explore.

TVGuide.com : Eliza Dushku told me she's excited to have Dollhouse sharing Friday nights with Sarah Connor. She sees it as a night of "female empowerment."

Glau : Yeah, me too. I think it's a good match.

TVGuide.com : Plus, you have that Joss Whedon connection. [Glau starred in Whedon's Firefly, also for Fox.]

Glau : We do, and I think the fans will band together and support us on Friday nights. We had a lot of competition on Monday, so I think this might be a good thing.

TVGuide.com : Oh, let's be clear — the competition on Monday is ridiculous.

Glau : It is. It's impossible. We've held onto our fan base, but you just cant hope for much more on a Monday.

TVGuide.com : Coming off of Firefly, Terminator and the bitchy gal you played in [the TV-movie] The Initiation of Sarah, do you crave playing a different role during the summer hiatus ? Maybe a romantic comedy where you wear flirty dresses and chase boys ?

Glau : I would love to wear a dress and play "normal" ! I'm so in love with Cameron and I would never want to lose that, but it will be nice to challenge myself. I'm hoping to do a straight drama, or possible a comedy.

TVGuide.com : What else can you tease about upcoming Sarah Connor episodes ? Any kisses in Cameron's future ?

Glau : Not in Cameron's, no ! [Laughs] But the mystery is going to get deeper and deeper. Sarah has been tormented by the visions of these three dots, so she goes off on her own, and she meets up with similarly "possessed" people. It's always interesting when you leave "the kids" [John and Cameron] alone. A big piece of the mystery is going to come to light in the next couple of episodes.

Glau : Yeah, and what's coming up is going to be cool.

Summer Glau on Terminator's Move to Fridays

The actress talks about Monday's fall finale and the upcoming new timeslot. by Matt Fowler

US, December 12, 2008 - During an interview on The Kevin and Bean Show– a morning radio show on Los Angeles' KROQ-FM — the smoldering, yet lethal, star of Terminator : The Sarah Connor Chronicles, Summer Glau was asked if she had any concerns about Terminator's upcoming move to Friday night with Joss Whedon's new series Dollhouse - which has many fans worried, since that night, especially on FOX, has been nicknamed the "death slot."

"Yes. I was not happy at first when I heard that we were moving," Glau stated. "But, you know, we've been fighting for our audience on Mondays so I'm hoping this is going to be a positive thing. It's always good when they're trying to work with you and help you."

Speaking about current storylines on the show, Glau acknowledged that her character Cameron seems to be evolving and acting more human. "I keep working towards it," Glau remarked. "I want to build it. I want to earn it. I don't want to just say 'well, my Terminator's more human.' I want to earn it every week in the way that she absorbs things around her. And I think that her relationship with John is more complicated than any of us understand yet. This year they've brought on a love interest for John and it's been this love triangle and I love it because I've been trying to explore the possibility if a robot could be jealous."

As for Sarah Connor's visions of the three dots, Glau told Kevin and Bean that Monday's mid-season finale, "Earthlings Welcome Here", won't do anything to conclude that mystery. But it will definitely expand upon it in a "very surreal episode" that has "Sarah ending up in the desert with a bunch of people who are searching for aliens as she becomes very isolated from the group. And then, of course, John's scared that Cameron's going to kill Riley."

The "Earthlings Welcome Here" episode of Terminator airs Monday, December 15th at 8:00pm ET/PT on FOX. Terminator will then return Friday, February 13th for new episodes leading into Joss Whedon's Dollhouse.

Terminator Scoop : The Big Death, the Friday Move, and More

The following story contains spoiler information about last night's Terminator : The Sarah Connor Chronicles.

Before Season 2 of Terminator : The Sarah Connor Chronicles premiered, executive producer Josh Friedman teased a big death — saying when it hit your screen, you'd certainly know it.

This reporter's money was on Agent Ellison, or perhaps Dean Winters' EMT. For some reason, never did it enter my mind that Team Connor would actually get the upper hand on Cromartie and thus terminate the terminator who has taunted them for so long.

"Cromartie kind of forced their hand," series scribe Dan Thomsen explains. "He was a good terminator and got to his prey" — and thus had to be dealt with. So, is Shirley Manson's Weaver now the only big baddie ? Or might another tin can be on its way to track the Connors ? "How and when Skynet gets its information for sending assets into our time is very interesting to me," says Thomsen. With Cromartie gone, "We'll see what the next move is."

Thomsen, along with Friedman and (for the blink of an eye) Cromartie's portrayer, Garret Dillahunt, conversed with press and fans in a Fox-sponsored Mooby chat room on Monday night, after the big death had been delivered to East Coast viewers. While there was a certain irony in a futuristic show brokering an interaction via a venue that (as one person put it) "looked like a circa-1995 AOL chat room," the patient onlooker was able to glean a few scooplets from the show runner and his scribe.

On Terminator's Midseason Move to Fridays, Leading into Dollhouse "I'm happy to be with Joss Whedon," said Friedman, "and now we'll see how fervent our fans are. Which is to say : Will you stay home ?"

On Sarah Connor Possibly Visiting the Dollhouse "The crossover I'd like... is for Joss to come over and write my show for a week, so I can go to Hawaii," Friedman joked.

On Friedman's Plan to Fix Heroes — Since Everybody Has One, After All "How would I improve Heroes ? Bring back Bryan Fuller [who's currently exec-producing Pushing Daisies]."

On Sage Sarah Connor Not Expounding As Much "I love the monologues, but we curtailed them mainly because they were affecting the way we edited the opening and closing of the episodes," explained Friedman. "Funny, when we did the voiceovers, everyone complained !"

On Newcomer Jesse "Stephanie [Jacobson] will be around for a while," said Friedman. "She's got some work to do."

On John's Budding Romance with a High-School Girl "I think John's an idiot to be involved with Riley (played by Leven Rambin)," Friedman admitted, "but he's got his reasons."

On the Belief that a Robot (Cameron) Shouldn't Hook Up with a Human (John) "But it's Summer Glau !" Thomsen argued.

The one question that both men repeatedly and effectively dodged throughout the fast-moving exchange : "What happened in the basement ?" It's a reference to a lingering plot thread from Season 1. Theories range from Cameron used the cellar to interrogate prisoners (while listening to Chopin !) to a larger story in which Brian Austin Green's Derek might ultimately betray the Connors. All Friedman and Thomsen would say is this : "We talk a lot about the basement in the writers room."

In person, Summer Glau looks petite and delicate. Indeed, she looks petite and delicate onscreen – until her cyborg character begins kicking major butt in Terminator : The Sarah Connor Chronicles. Garret Dillahunt, who plays the cyborg known as Cromartie, tasked with terminating John Connor, is a bit taller and broader, but still doesn't appear capable of the havoc wreaked by his character. Both actors are happy to talk about Terminator's second season, which has just begun airing on Fox. Words : Abbie Bernstein

Would you have felt bad if the end of season one had been the end of the show, with Cameron apparently blowing up ?

Summer Glau : I would have been devastated. I love this show and I desperately want to see what's next.

When did you know you were coming back ?

Summer Glau : They always drag it out. We didn't know until about a month before we went back into production. It was horrible - no one wanted to hire me because they were convinced the show would come back. I read for a lot of roles. Then they'd say, “You're great – come back when your show gets cancelled.” So then I waited for months to have a job and I was obviously hoping we'd come back, because we're not done with it.

Were either of you worried that your character might shapeshift into another actor, as Terminators sometimes do ?

Garret Dillahunt : [laughs] I guess I'm not really worried – I'm prepared. Obviously, no one is safe. We're doing a lot of fun stuff this year that flashes back to the actor's face he stole, stuff like that, which is going to be a lot of fun and I think we're going to try to cross-pollinate with webisodes.

Summer, on Firefly your character River's relationships with people around her changed through the course of the series. It seems it's a little more difficult for the cyborg Cameron to have relationships that change. Or do you think there are changes that are just more subtle ?

Summer Glau : I can tell you, relationships do change in the second season. I can't say how, but everything is changing. She's growing quite a bit, it's very surprising. There have been hints of what's going to happen to her - nothing is going to be the same. I think it was a triangle the first season. It's a power struggle between Sarah [Lena Headey] and I in trying to influence John. I think that it's always a triangle, and now that Riley [Leven Rambin as John's potential love interest] has come on the scene, Cameron is definitely [displeased].

Is it difficult or fun playing somebody who doesn't experience human emotions ?

Garret Dillahunt : It is fun, and it's a little challenging. I was saying to someone else, I kind of like these guys. I wish I could steal some of the qualities of these Terminators, because if you take away the murderous intent, they're committed, they're focused, they don't hesitate, they don't apologise – they have a lot of qualities that I would like to have in my own life.

Are Terminators like consummate actors ?

Garret Dillahunt : I don't know, because I think people think there's something weird about them. But what's good about them is they don't care what you think.

Do you enjoy doing all the physical action Terminator requires ?

Summer Glau : It's a lot of fun, I will say that. What makes me confident is being on a TV series that really puts women in the driver's seat.

Are you getting offered more varied parts now than you used to ?

Summer Glau : It's getting better and better every year. I work very hard. This industry tends to always want to put you in a category, and it's very hard – everybody's in a category and as an actor, I really want to do something different.

Have you been approached to be in the new Terminator movie ?

Summer Glau : I wish they'd put me in the background. I just want to be in it, be there.

Were you a fan of the Terminator franchise before you became involved in the show ?

Summer Glau : I'd never seen [the films] before I was cast, but I respected them more than I could ever have imagined. After I saw them, I thought, ‘Oh, that's why people love them.' They're really special.

Have you spoken to any women's groups about playing strong female characters - either Cameron or River or both ?

Summer Glau : No, but I'd love to. I don't think there are enough roles like that. It's fantastic to be part of something that makes you feel really empowered.

Where would you like to see the storyline go ?

Summer Glau : I could never imagine better storylines than what we see. I can tell you, the storyline that I'm working on right now, episode four, is my favourite episode. It's my biggest episode and in my wildest dreams, I could not have put myself in this scenario…
