Brainiac is coming back, and he's looking to enlist an unwitting Lex Luthor in making the world kneel before Zod.

James Marsters is set to reprise his role as Dr. Milton Fine, the alter ego of supervillain Brainiac, on "Smallville" later this season. He heads a lineup of guest stars on The WB that also includes "Desperate Housewives" star James Denton, Nick Lachey and Kelly Carlson of "Nip/Tuck."

Marsters will make his return to "Smallville" in an episode called "Hypnotic," scheduled to air in the spring. In it, he'll try to use Lex's (Michael Rosenbaum) fixation on the spaceship as a way to free General Zod from the Forbidden Zone (the general's two cohorts made an appearance in this season's premiere). Click Here for More ! Denton will make a return appearance on "Reba," playing the marriage counselor who stoked Reba's (Reba McEntire) last season. The soon-to-be Miss America host will try to follow up on that mutual attraction when he shows up unexpectedly at Reba's door.

Lachey, who had a recurring part on "Charmed" last season and is at work on a pilot for the network, will pop up on freshman sitcom "Twins" Friday, Feb. 24. He'll play the new marketing director at the lingerie company, hired by Farrah (Molly Stanton). The episode is called "Himbo," so we're guessing maybe his hiring was based on something other than his understanding of how to raise brand awareness in consumers.

Finally, Carlson will appear on "Everwood" as Ada, last seen on that show selling a fake ID to Ephram in a February 2004 episode. This time around, her character, Ada, will test Bright's (Chris Pratt) ability to be faithful to girlfriend Hannah (Sarah Drew).

Aquaman's getting his own spinoff ! The WB isn't saying who's playing the part yet. I'm told it won't be Alan Ritchson, who was Smallville's Aquaman last month. Also, I hear they're in talks with James Marsters to make him a series regular. No word yet on if he's going to sign. I know his children live here in L.A., so it might be a tough sell.

Annette O'Toole just can't get away from the occupational hazards of playing Superman's mom in "Smallville." In the Nov. 17 episode, Superman's latest nemesis, Brainiac (James Marsters) goes after Martha Kent (O'Toole), leaving her with only hours to live. "I get hit by a lightning bolt out of the sky and get this kind of flesh-eating disease," reports O'Toole. "The worst part of it was sitting in the makeup chair while they put this stuff called pus on me. It's this flesh-colored Elmer's glue, then they put this stuff that's kind of like green and gray flocking that makes your skin look like it's decaying."

Fortunately, says O'Toole, the makeup only had to be applied to "one arm and my hand, my neck and a little bit up into my face. Thank God they arrested the disease before it got all over my face !" Things do get pretty dire before show's end, however. "I have a really nice kind of death bed scene with Clark (Tom Welling)." Not to worry, though, she says. "It's Smallville, eventually, I'll be recovered. We always get saved."

PROFESSOR FINE CONVINCES CLARK TO DESTROY THE FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE

After Martha (Annette O'Toole) contracts a strange disease and is given hours to live, Clark (Tom Welling) turns to Professor Fine (guest star James Marsters), who convinces Clark that Jor-El is the one responsible for her illness and the only way to save her is to destroy the Fortress of Solitude.

However, once the two arrive at the Fortress, Professor Fine tries to free Zod and kill Clark.

Smallville : Burning Questions Answered !

Smallville has shown its superstrength this fall, stacking up well against the Thursdays-at-8 heavyweights and breathing down Sydney Bristow's neck. It's no surprise, since the storytelling has picked up faster than a speeding bullet. The biggest twist came in the Oct. 13 episode when Kryptonian dad Jor-El brought Clark back from his deathbed and then told him that "the life force that has been returned to you will soon be taken from someone you love." Uh-oh, that can't be good. TV Guide turned to executive producer Al Gough for answers to our burning questions.

Was Jor-El bluffing ? Is someone really gonna die ?

Yup. "He does really mean it," Gough says. "If you look at Jor-El's history in the show, everything he has said has come to pass." The big event will happen in the 100th episode, airing this winter.

OK, who's it gonna be ?

"If I told you that, it wouldn't be any fun," Gough says. "But it's safe to say it won't be the only death you see in that episode."

What's Brainiac up to ?

We've only just met Professor Fine (played by Buffy the Vampire Slayer's James Marsters), but we'll soon learn that he's really the Kryptonian villain Brainiac and that he's up to no good. Gough says Brainiac will make his intentions known in the Nov. 10 and Nov. 17 episodes. "He tries to trick Clark into doing what he wants. I don't want to say too much, but there is a smack-down at the Fortress."

And what about those Disciples of Zod from the season premiere ? Will they be back ?

We can expect an encore performance from those Kryptonian thugs who Clark sent into an extradimensional prison (one that seemed a lot like the Phantom Zone of Superman II). "I don't want to spoil it, so I'll just say that you haven't seen the last of them and Brainiac is a key to that."

Lastly, there have been rumors on the Internet that this is your last season. Is that true ?

"No, it's not the last season," Gough says adamantly. So how did that nasty rumor get started ? Blame Canada. "The Canadian broadcaster of the show read something online, failed to call Warner Bros., which sells them the show, and put it on their marketing campaign," Gough says. "They have since sent me a formal letter of apology." Whew... crisis averted. Gough assures us that Smallville will be "on for at least six [more seasons] and hopefully seven."
