What Will Joss Whedon Do Next ?

It's been a dark couple of days for TV genre fans. Despite the public's obsession with vampires (evident in the just-announced People's Choice Award nominations), Eastwick was axed, Fringe and V have taken a ratings tumble, and Dollhouse has been cancelled. (The Hollywood Reporter broke the news this afternoon.) After one and a half seasons (well, two half seasons to be exact), the sci-fi thriller about a mysterious team of all-purpose programmable human beings for hire has been given its walking papers by Fox, the same network that pulled the plug on Whedon's late lamented Firefly. Anyone who's been keeping up with the show can't be surprised. The ratings were weak in its first season, and they only got weaker this season. It was a much bigger surprise when Dollhouse was renewed. (Hulu, apparently, helped. A lot.) This begs the question of course, "What will Joss do next ?" After all, he may have a full year to kill.

Cabin in the Woods — the Whedon-scripted, Drew Goddard-directed spin on the hoary cliche of teenagers stuck in a you-know-what — is in the can, though its release has been pushed back to 2011, supposedly in order to reformat it for 3-D. (Will it be more exciting this way ? Probably not. Will it be more difficult to pirate ? You betcha. MGM wins, while we, the fans, just get a longer wait.)

Goners, the sci-fi epic scripted and to be directed by Whedon, is still on the backburner at Universal. It could be there for a while longer, as the studio's most likely still wondering how to promote a film from the director of its underperforming Serenity.

Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog is probably the most succesful project Whedon's worked on in recent years, at least in terms of critical acclaim and profit-versus-cost (aside from the Buffy : Season 8 comic book from Dark Horse that he oversees and sometimes writes). So it's no surprise that a follow-up online series has been discussed. And it may be the next thing we see from Whedon, judging by his remarks today on Whedonesque about Dollhouse's cancellation. "I'm off to pursue internet ventures/binge drinking," he says. "Possibly that relaxation thing I've read so much about. By the time the last episode airs, you'll know what my next project is."

(It's uncertain when that last episode — a big finale intended to wrap up the show's storyline — will air, but Fox has announced it plans to release all produced episodes. Episode 11 is in production now, with two more to go, for a grand total of 13 for season 2.)

But it's hard not to look back at Whedon's two greatest ratings successes, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel (in their strongest seasons they represent — to my mind — his finest work), and wonder if Whedon shouldn't, with his next project, revisit the horror genre. His SF work has its admirers, but he's never quite tackled that genre with as much confidence and finesse as he has horror, possibly because Whedon tends to write from the heart more than the head. Horror, at its core, is about human emotion. Whereas SF, when it lives up to its potential — as it so rarely does on TV — is essentially a medium of ideas.

Ironically, the Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie that's in development at Fox, sans Whedon's involvement, may be the project to improve his fortune in Hollywood. This town is, after all, in the business of selling. And there's nothing it likes more than trumpeting a project as coming from the creator of another successful project.

Whatever Whedon tackles next, his legion of devoted fans will follow. But for his sake, and the sake of those who value quality genre entertainment, let's hope it reaches everybody else too.

Jane Espenson Steps Aside As 'Caprica' Showrunner

Will be replaced by Kevin Murphy on the 'Battlestar Galactica' spinoff so she can concentrate more on writing

Syfy once said it was excited to have former "Battlestar Galactica" and "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" writer Jane Espenson take on showrunning duties for its upcoming prequel show "Caprica." But now, that excitement is shifting to Espenson going back to her roots.

Espenson is out as showrunner, replaced by Kevin Murphy, who joined "Caprica" last month as a co-executive producer to work on the second half of the show's first season, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Espenson is not leaving the show, however. She will remain an executive producer with Murphy and "Battlestar Galactica" developer Ronald D. Moore. Instead, according to a Syfy spokeswoman, Espenson wanted to focus more on writing than management.

"She and Kevin switched up duties a bit during the second half of 'Caprica' Season 1," a Syfy spokeswoman told Airlock Alpha. "Jane decided to get back into some more intensive writing rather than running the room, and so ... Kevin has been taking a bit more of a lead in breaking stories as a result."

However, the spokeswoman added, this is simply "business as usual."

It "doesn't change anything," she said. "And Jane, along with Ron and David, is still an exec producer."

Murphy was a co-executive producer for ABC's "Desperate Housewives" for three seasons between 2004 and 2007 and was a consulting producer for The CW series "Reaper." He wrote two episodes of "Reaper" and nine episodes of "Desperate Housewives" during his tenure at those two shows.

He also wrote 11 episodes of the "Weird Science" television series in the mid-1990s.

Last September, reports surfaced that "Caprica" was in trouble after a production shutdown. At the time, Espenson told Airlock Alpha that the shutdown was more for scheduling adjustments for the Winter Olympic Games that were coming to "Caprica's" home, Vancouver, B.C.

Mark Stern, head of original programming at Syfy, told reporters, including Airlock Alpha, visiting the "Caprica" set last month that a production shutdown was needed to take a breather.

"We actually took a break, shut down for a few weeks, so that we could, at the mid-point, regroup and say, 'OK, what have we learned from the first 10, and where do we want to from here,'" Stern said at the time.

"Caprica" is set to premiere Jan. 22 on Syfy.

Zack Whedon Reveals New Terminator Series for Dark Horse

You know what's great about Comic Books ? Everything. I know what you're thinking, “That's quite a statement, Zack. Oh and by the way, who the f*#k are you ?” You don't know ? I'm one quarter of the writing team that brought you Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog that internet sensation that swept the basements of America eighteen months ago. Never heard of it ? You need to stay in more.

In the wake of that TV on the Internet show, I wrote some online comics (how future is that ?) that tied in with the project. They were, if I must be completely objective, absolutely pretty good. On Wednesday, November 18th a Dr. Horrible comic that I wrote will hit stores. My first real print comic. You can buy it if you want to…

I bring this up not only to plug my product and coyly bait you into purchasing it but also to talk about the things that I love about comic books but only discovered once I started writing them.

1. Comic books are truly a writer's medium. Not since actual books has there been a medium so well suited to the writer. I work in television primarily and getting to tell stories the way you want to can be an elusive experience in Hollywood. Sort of like how finding a pet dragon that poops chocolate can be an “elusive experience.” When I got the completed pages back from the artist, Eric Canete, on my first comic it was the first time something I wrote came out exactly as I had imagined it. It was a bit of a revelation. It scratched an itch that had been nagging me for years.

2. The art. I have had the opportunity to collaborate with amazing artists. Their contribution is obviously huge and cannot be overstated. Canete, Farel Dalrymple, Jim Rugg and Joelle Jones have all taken my comic scripts and made them funnier and more interesting with their artistic talents. So that is nice.

3. They don't cost a ton to produce. The more expensive something is to make the more people you will have looking over your shoulder and usually making it suck. When fear of financial ruin is not a factor the few people who do work with you have only the story's best interests at heart. Sierra Hahn and Scott Allie are the editors I've worked with at Dark Horse Comics and every note they've given me has been totally right. That never happens. Ever.

4. The opportunity to tell stories you would not otherwise be able to tell. I am currently working on a six issue Terminator series for Dark Horse. I just turned in the first script and I'm very excited about it. I love Terminator. I think that movie is so good. Holy Toledo is it good. Now I get to play in that universe and make up Terminator stories of my own that people will get to read. I am not a big-time, famous dude and yet now I am choreographing action sequences set in a post-apocalyptic future overrun by evil cybernetic organisms hell bent on destroying the human race. How is that possible ?! I'll answer your question, Made-Up Person. It's possible because in comics it doesn't cost 150 million dollars to tell that story. They can put an idiot like me in charge !

The thing that draws me to writing comics is the same thing that has drawn so many writers, my brother Joss included, to making internet content. Control. It makes perfect sense that Felicia Day, the self-made (not self-proclaimed) Queen of the Internet, is now writing a comic for Dark Horse. Her fantastic web show, The Guild, was born out of a desire to control her career and her comic will be an extension of that pursuit.

I've always loved reading comics. Alan Moore, Jeffrey Brown, Craig Thompson and Brian K. Vaughan are just a few of the writers whose work I've connected with and adored. What I've discovered over the past couple of years are the joys of writing comics and they are considerable.

"Gone too Soon" Sci-Fi Show list with a Joss Whedon focus

Joss Whedon has become something of a tortured artist since 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' ended its highly successful seven-season run in 2003. Since Sunnydale was destroyed and 'Angel' got pulled right when it was finding its own identity post-'Buffy,' Whedon has yet to find another long-running hit. It's still hard to believe that a show as great as 'Firefly' only lasted one season !

Whedon's bad luck continues with the recent announcement that Fox is pulling the plug on 'Dollhouse,' a series that had enough of a following — and potential — to warrant another season. Would 'Dollhouse' have really hit its stride further down the road ? We'll never know. Here are some other sci-fi television series that met their makers too soon.

'Angel'

Network : The WB

Yes, 'Angel' did just fine, running for five seasons and enjoying a fan following that was almost as large and powerful as that of 'Buffy''s. By all means, 'Angel' was a success — the problem is that it was canceled just when it started to get really good. By season 5, 'Angel' was its own show, not just "a 'Buffy' spin-off," and it could've gone in some very interesting and exciting directions if it had stayed alive — or undead, as it were.

Another Joss Whedon Special, 'Firefly' was actually top-notch science fiction, mixing swaggering Western elements and high Space Opera melodrama with the trademark Whedon sarcasm and attitude we've come to know and at least sort-of love. The ragtag crew of the good ship Serenity was good company for all of 11 aired episodes — Whedon, however, ended up having something of the last laugh, as DVD sales of the series were good enough to warrant a follow-up feature length film, the equally excellent 'Serenity' (2005).
