Wednesday 12 October 2005, by Anonymous : In the opening sequence of "Serenity", it says that Earth-That-Was could no longer support all the people on it, so some went into space and terraformed other planets for their use. Since the two major languages used in the world-of-the-future are English and a form of Chinese, it makes sense to extrapolate a conflict on Earth-That-Was, between the two major super-powers, which aparently was won by the Asian power. Thus, the Asian peoples got to keep ETW, while the "losers" in the conflict were shuttled off into space to try and make a go of it there.
