WHATEVERFriday 29 December 2006, by Julie Lambert : Dear Mr. Baldwin, What a shame that ABC has decided to take "Day Break" off the air. It was innovative and intriguing. For a change, a TV show for public TV allowed one to think. Instead, we get to see more of the same "reality", comedy, and game shows, rather than creativity and talent. The talent of the actors provided believeable characters. Anyone I knew that watched it has expressed similar sentiments and observations. Why is something as far fetched as "Lost" continued, but not something as thought provoking as "DayBreak"? I don’t get to watch much TV, but I made sure that I rearranged my schedule so I didn’t miss any part of "DayBreak". Isn’t that what networks want? Perhaps putting those 2 shows back to back was a bad move. Two very different shows appealing to two very different audiences. I couldn’t get the station changed fast enough when "DayBreak" was over to avoid seeing any part of "Money". Perhaps others felt the same on either side of preference. I think ABC is making a big mistake. Shame too that those of us who truly appreciated the show don’t even get to see the rest of the episodes. Since my leisure time is so limited, I will now reconsider watching something new on ABC for fear that I may become as ’hooked’ as I got to "DayBreak" only to have it yanked before having any closure. I do not like getting involved in a show only to be left hanging. I think I will forget tv and just buy the DVD series so that I know I will always have a next episode! My 14 year old son and I looked forward to watching this show each week, while we were waiting for Lost to re-appear. Now Lost is being moved to 10:00 and they’ll lose people by doing that. Networks don’t give people enough time to get accostomed to new shows. We didn’t watch Lost the entire first season. After I heard people talking it up during its first year, we decided to wait until summer to catch everything, most importantly, to be able to understand what was going on. That would have been the case with Day Break. No one, would have understood it, had they caught the show after the first week. I’m baffled what networks are thinking now-a-days. Until this year, they’d run a few new eppys, then run re-runs, and this would go on from Sept to May. They finally heard the viewing public say that this was insane. We wanted to have all new eppys at once. So ABC said, we’ll split up the season and make shows that will only fit in between the split up season. So they get people interested in the shows and then blamo, they’re gone. That really ticked off everyone that watch Day Break. I’ve heard you can spend $5 and go on myspace.com to see the final eppys, I don’t know if that is true. I for one won’t do that. Networks wonder why people are renting the DVDs for old shows. At least we get to see all of them and no one can cancel it prior to the end. ABC you made a poor decision, which actually makes me want to re-think if I’ll watch anymore of your shows. (I watch Desperate Housewives and Extreme Makeover Home Edition too). By the way, Medium is on Weds at 10:00, I won’t miss that. I bought it. I got into it. I was pumped. I awaited the next installment. And then, nothing. I am not a computer tv watcher (not yet anyway). I like to watch my television programming on a big screen TV. I was waiting to see if Adam Baldwin was really a bad guy. Do the ratings reflect shows that are taped or recorded? It was one of the best shows on - riveting plot, great acting and true drama. Obiously the ratings influenced your decision, but the fact that real entertainment was bumped while pure trash continues is disturbing. You initiated the show at a time when people were beginning to ramp up their schedules due to the onset of the holidays - a show with a progressive plot that required regular watching. Big mistake on your part. You’ve lost me on Wednesday nights - I signed up for a class when I heard the show was gone. Hope you reconsider bringing this incredibly entertaining drama back. If not, hope you are selling it to an independent. And, I hope someone lets the writers and the actors know the cancellation had nothing to do with their amazing talent and ability. This was a good show fast moving with a lot of action. Really looked forwarded to the next episode. I agree with the other posts not much else to watch in ABC. You can believe I’m upset, because I NEVER send messages about TV shows to anyone. I was mad before, and now I just feel sad, because I know this won’t change anything. I do agree with an earlier observation though. You need to give a show enough time, and during the right time of year. This was a really bad time of year to start a show that required you to see every show in order to understand what was going on. It should have been shown starting about now (January) and had a rerun late at night or something later in the week so that if someone missed one, they could catch the other and continue on with the story. I also didn’t watch Lost the first season. I watched the whole season in reruns during the summer and then started watching it during season two. Day Break is way better than this season of Lost so far. (Actually it’s better than Lost ever was.) The viewers are only holding on in hopes that something changes with the new episodes. Actually, in looking at ABC’s Primetime line up - I now see that this show didn’t even belong on ABC. There are only 3 shows in your lineup that I ever watch, one is Dancing with the Stars, and you’re about to lose me on another one of them. You people that decided to pull this show are idiots. The show had low ratings because you didn’t promote it enough and you were too stupid to know how to market it. M$R Friday 12 January 2007, by Chalde69 : I myself never have time to watch tv during the evening since I have to work, so I record alot of my shows....with the new season I havent been able to see what was good, but I remember reading about "Daybreak" in a mag somewhere and it sounded interesting....but I didnt know when it was on, so that left me to download the episodes which I do with most of my shows that I cant see, it allows me to sit back and watch a few when I get the chance, and today I decided to check out day break...and let me tell ya, I watched all 6 episodes back to back....it has been the one of the amazing shows I have come across...not too many keep me in my seat and wanting more, but this one got me....I came online to see if I could download anymore and I couldnt seem to find any...so then I did a search and low and behold I came across this site saying it was cancelled...and I have to say is " ABC...WHAT ARE U THINKING????? " granted u probably didnt have it on the best night....u should have had it on a night with one of your popular shows...it may have done better...since I download the shows the dont know what the " Money" show was about....but still....u guys had a winner there, perhaps there wasnt enough advertising for it....maybe u should sell it to FOX they could do something with it....heck, it could be put up against 24 and Prison Break....but alas I am now one of the crowd that again wants to turn their back on ABC....its a wonder people still watch the station when u keep cancelling the good shows. Killed ABC Serials Get One More Breath ’Day Break’ headed to web, ’Nine,’ ’Six Degrees’ may air By Rick Porter January 14, 2007 ’The Nine’LOS ANGELES — As much as any network, ABC bore the brunt of the Great Serialized Show Turn-off of fall 2006. Three of its new shows — "Day Break," "The Nine" and "Six Degrees" — were pulled after a few weeks on the air, leaving what fans there were of each series on a limb. It looks, though, that ABC will offer some form of closure for all three shows. "Day Break," which was to have plugged the "Lost" hiatus hole between November and February, got the hook after five weeks on the air. It will, however, make its way to ABC.com by the end of February, ABC Entertainment chief Stephen McPherson said Sunday during ABC’s time at the Television Critics Association press tour. (It was to have been up by now, but he says some music-clearance issues have held things up.) As for "The Nine" and "Six Degrees," "those two actually may get back on the air in [primetime]," he says. Neither show has a specific return date, but McPherson says it’s likely they’ll be back on before the season closes in May. "Six Degrees," in fact, remains in production after going dark for a while to retool. Now, the bad news: Neither show is being extended beyond its initial 13-episode order this season. That means, in the case of "The Nine," that viewers won’t get to see a complete resolution of the bank-robbery story that fuels the show. "It wasn’t designed to end at the end of the 13, so it doesn’t answer that specific question," McPherson says. It’s possible, though, that ABC would work with creators Hank and K.J. Steinberg to offer fans some way (short of shooting more episodes) of finding out how the story ends. As for why the shows didn’t click with audiences, McPherson can’t point to any one reason. He does believe, though, that there wasn’t anything wrong with the series creatively. "The shows were incredibly well-produced. We loved the shows creatively," he says. "I don’t look back in kind of hindsight and say, ’Boy, we should have done this differently, that differently,’ about those shows. [It] may have just been timing." Going forward, ABC is looking for a better balance between serialized shows and those that don’t necessarily demand an every-week commitment from viewers. "There’s so much good drama on right now that you’re asking a lot of the audience," McPherson says. "On every night there’s two or three shows, not just on our network, but across the board. I think in the mix as we go into development this year, we have more stuff that is procedural or close-ended." Wednesday 25 April 2007, by Mary in Dallas,Tx : Alright, what is the deal??!!! I liked "DayBreak" and loved"Six Degrees" and you guys have shelved both of them. I truely believe that they should have been given another shot at making it. And what was up with that teaser episode of “Six Degrees” in early April and then yanking it off again? It seems the minute there is an interesting adult television series to watch it’s voted off the air and replaced with mindless, poorly written, jibber jabber. Is it too much to ask to have a series that ventures outside of the box? Are we that predictable where all we need are a few “reality shows”, some mindless drama and oh lets not forget the original idea of having a show that revolves around the medical field? (Although I love “House”) Please reconsider, at least give “Six Degrees” another chance, this series had real potential.
