All I can say is that if you think Burroughs’ series is poorly written, I agree that there are a number of redundant and tedious episodes in which Tarzan and/or Jane and/or others are captured, then escape, then are recaptured, etc., etc. But I wouldn’t dismiss them all that way. There are some real gems hidden in the doss, including (my personal favorites) Tarzan the Untamed, Tarzan and the Lost Empire, and Tarzan and the Foreign Legion. Furthermore check out Phillip Jose Farmer’s Tarzan spinoffs including The Dark Heart of Time, A Feast Unknown, and Lord of the Trees (the latter is more of a drawn-out Oliver Stone style fantasy of bullets, grenades, and bloodbaths though). If you’ve only read #1, you’re missing alot. You might also try Burroughs’ The Martian Chronicles Series. All the movie and TV Tarzans have more or less been pathetically underdone misinterpretations of the original. Although I am as big a Tarzan fan as anyone goin back to my own boyhood, I didn’t even bother to catch this latest TV series. Now that I read your critique, I’m doubly glad that I didn’t.
