I have two daughters one a 15 year old Black belt and the other a four year old wanting to be a black belt like Buffy. I think that Buffy is (was) a great show for the whole family to watch together. My mother and my daughters and I still watch the seasons as I own them because as my first daughter Lee-Andrea (the black belt) watched them the first time around my second daughter Jay-Lynn didn’t get the chance to watch it , so I bought the seasons. I feel that it teaches lots of good things like women don’t have to be scared and they can defend them selves and even thought some may look nice doesn’t mean they are just like if something seems scary doesn’t mean they are either. I wish there was a show like this on TV now to get parents and children to talk because there are violence and horror and sex in the real world and as parents we need to equip our children with knowledge to defend them selves to the best of there ability. My hat goes off to Buffy cast and crew as it is still the best show out there.

Buffy in it’s later seasons was pretty bad for values. Spike rapes or tries to rape Buffy and she is still in love with him. Their relationship is based on his hitting her and she responding with sex. Bondage and public sex (including in an alley by a dumpster) inform their relationship which is viewed as "romantic." Spike engages in and admits to behaviors that are appalling and Buffy responds with physical affection.

The show teaches girls that violent and dangerous men are to be preferred, and young boys that violence is not only no impediment to winning a woman’s heart but the key (as long as you’re "sexy" and socially dominant).

Buffy S1-5 is not bad, the last two seasons IMHO will influence kids to some very negative conclusions. Because the show was generally well done. The show’s writers are justly proud of their GLAAD awards and the social impact, but they can’t have it both ways: the messages about what sort of man to be like (Spike) and what gets rewarded. Buffy loved the vampire who tried to rape her. The other women (Faith, Anya) were strongly attracted to Spike because of his violence. [In it’s last two years the show seemed to be about "pushing the envelope" in what could be depicted onscreen more than anything else.]

Shrug. You have to take the good with the bad in the show, including it’s last two years, and make your own judgment on how mature children are in introducing them to the show. I personally think it’s naive to believe entertainment does not have a significant impact on how children develop their own worldviews. There are lot of positives in the show, but those positives are not without some (IMHO) very questionable elements.
