Wonder Woman is a very difficult sell, and Whedon a worse one for comic book movies. Comic book heroes are wish-fulfillment for nerdy guys who don’t get the girls, see Superman’s Schuster and Siegel, Stan Lee and Spider-Man, etc.

Female superheroes don’t work because guys are not interested in them, THEY want a story where a guy "like them" gets the girl. Even Tony Stark has heavy doses of nerd-dom, it’s his "superpower" ... making technology.

Joss has shown zilch ability to attract young men. Guys identify with Xander not Angel or Spike, so Whedon’s not able to write for young men. Women, yes, but not young men. Young men are the basis for comic book movies so it was not surprising to see Warner’s move.

Bottom line: the comic book audience is about 98% Xanders, and they’re not interested in stories about Angel or Spike. Joss is probably better situated in female-dominated TV.
