Five or ten years ago the age difference wouldn’t have mattered.
Ten years ago, Patricia would have been eleven, while James was 32, so, no, I don’t think that would have worked at all.
I think it really is all about how James feels about women, in general. There’s obviously some issues there, as he just can’t connect to someone his own age, or, even close to his age. Needing to be with someone 24 years younger, is just a sign of his own insecurities regarding women. Since his divorce, I don’t think he’s dated anyone over the age of 22.
