In 1995 a young and upcoming Network Executive, Gail Berman, was looking at the current crop of shows and realised that there was a shortfall of strong female characters especially in genre shows, which was handy given the fact that the company of which she was president, Sandollar, had produced a feature featuring exactly what TV was missing 3 years prior, and held the rights to produce a TV series from it.
