Alyson Hannigan - "Date Movie" - Thetimesonline.com Review

Not the average ’Date Movie’

Every somewhat cheesy flick has it coming, a parody. And in this movie, it seems that every actual date movie had its turn. It’s like the "Scary Movie" series, only instead of poking fun at those somewhat lame scary movies; it pokes fun at the cliché date movie.

Alyson Hannigan stars as Julia Jones, a former ugly duckling turned beauty thanks to a little team called West Coast Customs (yes, as in the MTV series "Pimp My Ride"). After her transformation she wins a spot on a dating show for the desperate and ends up stealing the "prince’s" heart.

Things go great between the couple, until his foxy ex-fiancé returns to the picture. At first it seems as though they both put their past behind them, but after Julia experiences something "from a Mel Gibson movie," she hears the ex’s thoughts and finds out that she’s really just around to win the love of her life back and leave Julia in the dumps.

As if that’s not enough pressure, her parents don’t approve of her new man.

And when it comes time to "meet the parents" all goes downhill. From the gassy potty-trained cat to the baby who uses sign language (inappropriately, that is), everything seems to either be awkward, embarrassing or just downright appalling.

Yet, no matter how gross the scenes may be, they’re still hilarious. It does a great job of picking the right movies and right scenes to parody. Sure, it’s a little stupid, well, it’s very stupid, but that’s what makes it so funny. It makes you laugh at yourself for saying "aww" when you saw the actual movie it makes fun of. And as weird as it may seem, this would actually make a good date movie, it’d be hard to not have a good time watching it.
