Alyson Hannigan talks "Willow" Tv Movie - We will have to wait a very long time

Monday 6 February 2006, by Webmaster

Don’t Wait For Willow

Alyson Hannigan, who played Willow Rosenberg for seven years on the TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer, told SCI FI Wire that she occasionally hears rumors about proposed TV movies based on Buffy or its spinoff series, Angel, but doubts that creator Joss Whedon will ever get around to realizing a telefilm based on her character. "I don’t know," Hannigan said in an interview while promoting her new film, the comedy Date Movie. "Yeah, it pops up every now and then, and I just don’t know. I just treasure the experience. It was such a great, long chapter of my life."

Hannigan, who also co-stars on the CBS sitcom How I Met Your Mother, added: "I think I would just be too scared to sort of go back and possibly tarnish it in any way. Joss is too busy [to do a Willow movie]. He’s not going to write it. He’s not going to direct it, you know? I’m sure he would get great people, but there’s nothing like the Joss touch. I think by all means they should absolutely do the Spike movie. I think that’s the logical next step, but ... I don’t think Willow is the next step."

It’s actually yet to be determined if any kind of Buffy or Angel spinoff movie will come to pass. David Janollari, president of entertainment at what used to be The WB network, said last month that the network would welcome a movie based on James Marsters’ Spike character, but echoed Hannigan’s comments. At the recent Television Critics Association winter press tour, Janollari told reporters that Whedon may be too busy.

Whedon is planning to write and direct a big-screen version of Wonder Woman and is also known to be developing a supernatural film called Goners, casting further doubt on the likelihood of a Spike movie. Janollari’s desire to air a Spike movie may be complicated by The WB’s recently announced merger with UPN to create The CW, which came after Janollari made his comments in January.

For his part, Whedon has remained noncommittal about doing a Spike or other Buffy spinoff movie, though he has expressed interest in doing one.

  • That sucks. I know everyone is talking about how much they want to see a Spike movie but I’d rather see Willow.

  • Just tell me what the hell happened in that alley! I sort of don’t get the delay on the Spike movie b/c all the pieces seem to be in place for Tim Minear, James and Amy anyway (unless it’s b/c Fox is sitting on its ass, as usual). And everyone knows the clock is ticking on James’s face (his words). I know there’s all this hoopla about the network merger but if they have half a brain, they know this’d be a huge hit (at least for them). And Fox oughta know the DVD would be for them as well. I was optimistic 6 months ago, but I’m less so now. That’s the problem with corporations determining what we watch. They’re the only ones who can finance this sort of expensive project, but then when you have a only a niche market success, they won’t plop down the fairly modest dough required to make outstanding television (or features for that matter) b/c it isn’t "sufficiently profitable." Of course it’s not, it’s a niche market thing. Then you’re left with the wasteland that is American tv and feature cinema.

  • I would take a Spike movie, Willow movie...hell at this point I’d take an Andrew or Clem movie. I just don’t see it happening though. I think Buffyverse as we knew it is gone forever....

  • I think I’ve learned to be sanguine (no pun intended) about things like this. I know I’m a sad Spike fan girl but I still like to see the Spike movie but if it doesn’t happen it doesn’t. Like Buffy and Angel you have to realise that although you loved something deeply that doesn’t mean it’s going to last forever and this is especially true in tv land. I’m afraid you just have to move on - it helps I’ve discovered "Lost" but that’s a whole other story.

I’d probably watch any spin-off of the Buffy/Angel verse but I can understand why people like SMG, DB, Eliza Dushku and now Ally Hannigan want to move on - you are talking about seven or eight years playing the same person even if they involved in interesting ways that’s is a bit restricting and has attendant risks of being type-cast. Seven or eight years is a long time unless you’re on a very successful sitcom or two - Kelsey Grammar must have played Frasier Crane for getting on for about twenty years if you count both "Cheers" and the eponymus named spin off but comic actors seem to be different in that regard and even Lisa Kudrow and Courtney Cox played different characters in films like "Scream" and "The Opposite of Sex".

  • Mrs. Denisoff is happily busy with her new show. But I agree with her that a SPIKE movie would be the right move. Now if they could get a duel movie with Spike AND Xander, that would be a fun one.

  • I don’t see anything negative in what Aly says - she doesn’t say she ’woudln’t do it - she has reservations about it but any serious actor would, but I think if Joss was going to do it she would in a heartbeat! So Joss, drop Wonder Woman for LATER. It can wait. Super Hero movies are so hit and miss, that I actually think a BuffyVerse Project would be a much safer bet.

And since Willow has always been and will always be my favorite B/A Character (and probably one of the few characters from either show that would easily be a main character, the Star even -or (Alyson Hannigan and Joss - for those of us who LOVE Willow - PLEASE at the very least a Willow cameo (longer than normal, beginning and end - which could lead into a Willow movie Next - or even Willow could be the character in each one and the Star Power to make the PTB pony up the cash to make it. Just look at the DVD sales - even a direct to DVD would easily pay for itself several times over - a TV Movie followed by a DVD realease would be even better (and hopefully lead to a Buffyverse spin off. I’m sure everyone will give it a chance - but it has to be in the Buffyverse - that place where young adults talk the talk, get tongue tied, walk the walk and trip and fall - but then get right back up and push proudly (or not so proudly) thru the laughing and/or growling masses to stand victorious at the end anyway. That’s what we want. That’s what we NEED. Come on Joss, Aly, et al - we need you all! :-) Newt

  • The person who said the buffyverse its gone forever is so wrong, i mean its the most stupid thing i’ve ever heard, because like a month ago new dvds came out new action figures are coming out this year, new comics by darkhorse and joss is really considering doing a Spike movie he’s just working some things out, all we need its a little faith you know buffy will never die if the fans dont die buffy wont die either smg says shes willing to be on a buffy movie big screen movie only if the script is great and, and that what all of the other cast member has said so have a little faith, and wait a little becuase sooner than later buffy will be back.ç Sorry for bad english.

That sucks - its like Whedon is desperately trying to prove to the world that hes not a one-trick pony....but in doing so, hes stopped doing his best trick...the one that made us fall in love with him in the first place. I miss the buffyverse..... :(
