Buffy the Vampire Slayer: ’Amends’

Considering its genre, it’s not surprising that the holiday celebration that received the most attention on Buffy the Vampire Slayer was Halloween. The one time that Christmas was acknowledged on the show was the third season episode Amends (originally broadcast on Dec. 15, 1998).

Written and directed by series creator Joss Whedon, Amends begins with the Scooby Gang preparing their Christmas traditions… or most of them are. As Willow (Alyson Hannigan) reminds the gang, “Being Jewish. Remember, people? Not everybody worships Santa.” Cordelia (Charisma Carpenter) is making plans to go skiing in Aspen (“with actual snow”). Xander (Nicholas Brendon) will be spending Christmas Eve in his back yard in a sleeping bag to look at the stars, feel the whole nature vibe and escape from his parents’ drunken arguments. Buffy (Sarah Michelle Geller) and her mom (Kristine Sutherland) are going to have the usual holiday fare: “Tree. Nog. Roast Beast.”

The episode’s main plotline revolves around Angel (David Boreanaz) who, although he is once again a good vampire with a soul, is being tormented by dreams and visions of the people he murdered while in his evil Angelus mode. The visions include Jenny Calendar (Robia LaMorte) whom he killed last season when he temporarily lost his soul.

Thankfully, there are lighter moments, as well. Willow tries to seduce her boyfriend Oz (Seth Green) with the aide of chilled bubbly (from the shape of the bottle, it would seem to be ginger ale) and some Barry White tunes. And there’s a touching moment when fellow slayer Faith (Eliza Dushku), who hasn’t gone over to the dark side yet, accepts Buffy’s invitation to have Christmas dinner at the Summers home rather than spend the evening watching TV in her crappy motel room.

Back to the main plot. Giles (Anthony Stewart Head) has discovered that the source of Angel’s torment is The First, an ancient evil spirit. Meanwhile, Angel has decided he can’t take it any longer and goes to the top of Sunnydale’s highest hill to wait for the Christmas sunrise to turn him into a crispy critter. Then, as Buffy begs him to change his mind, something that seldom occurs in Southern California happens. It starts to snow…
