Thursday 22 April 2004, by cally

Fast National ratings for Wednesday, April 21, 2004

"American Idol" wasn’t enough to put FOX at the top of Wednesday night’s ratings — at least by one measure.

NBC posted an 8.3 rating/13 share in primetime to beat FOX’s 8.0/13 in households (FOX held a slight edge in total viewers, 12.73 million to 12.6 million for NBC). ABC, 6.5/11, edged CBS, 6.2/10, in the race for third. The WB was fifth at 2.7/4, followed by UPN at 2.1/3.

FOX did score a win in the valuable adults 18-49 demographic, averaging a 5.7 rating for the night. ABC was second at 4.1, followed by NBC at 4.0. CBS averaged 2.4, The WB 1.9 and UPN 1.3.

"That ’70s Show" (6.2/11) and "American Idol" (12.2/20) combined to average 9.2/16 for FOX at 8 p.m. NBC took second with "The Most Outrageous Moments on Live TV." CBS posted a 6.0/10 with "60 Minutes II," and ABC was fourth with two episodes of "My Wife and Kids." "Smallville," 2.8/5, put The WB in fifth, ahead of "Star Trek: Enterprise," 2.2/4, on UPN.

ABC led the pack at 9 p.m. with "The Bachelor," 7.9/12. "The West Wing," 7.2/11, kept NBC in second, while FOX dropped to third with "The O.C.," 6.8/11. Repeats of "The King of Queens" and "Yes, Dear" finished fourth for CBS. "Angel," 2.5/4, kept The WB in fifth. UPN’s "I’m Still Alive" trailed.

NBC’s "Law & Order" dominated the 10 p.m. hour with an 11.4/19. CBS’ "48 Hours Investigates" was second at 7.0/11, beating ABC’s "Extreme Makeover," 6.5/11.

It’s amazing that repeats of the unbearable King Of Queens and the even worse Yes, Dear came in before Angel. I finally understand why Angel wasn’t renewed; it’s not the network execs, it’s the people - they’ve got no taste at all. "Yelling at the WB is like yelling at a puppet" - to put a spin on a quote by Woody Harrelson.
