Buffy Star Defends Lesbian Kiss Scene

Wednesday 27 August 2003, by Webmaster

BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER star JAMES MARSTERS has defended the on-screen lesbian kiss that nearly forced the show’s creator to quit.

JOSS WHEDON almost left the show he created when producers wanted to cut a kiss between two of the female characters.

But Marsters - who plays SPIKE - believes the controversial kiss was essential.

He says, "It wasn’t about being gay; it was just about being in love. It was beautiful."

Marsters insists he is proud of the show for its decision to eventually include the scene.

He adds, "It’s hard, it’s really hard to be gay in America.

"Ten percent of the viewership (sic) is gay, so they want to see that reflected on the screen, which is beautiful."
