Buffy The Vampire Slayer

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif., Feb. 18 (UPI) — "The Lord of The Rings: The Two Towers" was the big winner with three awards at the fourth annual Hollywood Makeup Artist and Hair Stylist Guild Awards.

"Frida" — which had more nominations than any other feature with four — came away empty-handed from Sunday’s ceremonies in Beverly Hills. "My Big Fat Greek Wedding," "Chicago," "Gangs of New York" and "Sorority Boys" each took one award.

"The Lord of The Rings: The Two Towers" — the second of producer-director Peter Jackson’s series of screen adaptations of J.R.R. Tolkien’s literary classic — won for outstanding character makeup, special makeup and character hairstyling.

"Chicago" won for best period makeup, the only category in which it was nominated. "Gangs of New York" — Martin Scorsese’s historical epic about gang warfare in the mid-19th century — also won in the only category in which it was nominated, period hairstyling.

"My Big Fat Greek Wedding" — writer-actress Nia Vardalos’ surprise hit about a woman who comes to terms with her ethnic heritage — won for best contemporary makeup. "Sorority Boys" — a teen comedy about three rowdy college boys who get kicked out of their dorm and go in drag so they can live at a sorority house — won for best contemporary hairstyling.

With a track record of just four years, the Hollywood Makeup Artist and Hair Stylist Guild Awards do not provide much of an indication about eventual Academy Award outcomes.

Last year, "Moulin Rouge!" was a double winner at the guild awards, taking the prizes for best period makeup and period hairstyling. But the Oscar for makeup went to "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring." No Oscar is presented for hairstyling.

In the TV categories, "Alias" and "American Dreams" each picked up two hair and makeup awards.

"Alias" won for best contemporary makeup and best character hairstyling for a series. "American Dreams" won for best period makeup and period hairstyling for a series.

"MADtv" won for character makeup for a series. "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" won for special effects makeup for a series. "Sex and the City" won for contemporary hairstyling for a series.

HBO’s hit drama "Six Feet Under" had three nominations, but did not win any awards.

The guild presented Lifetime Achievement Awards to Paul LeBlanc and Jack Pierce.

LeBlanc won the Oscar for Best Makeup for "Amadeus" in 1984. Pierce, who died in 1968, was instrumental in creating makeup for such horror classics as "Dracula," "Frankenstein," "The Mummy" and "The Werewolf."
